Will NJ hit $15?

From the Star Ledger:

Vote on $15 minimum wage for N.J. coming soon, top Democrat says

Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin said Friday he expects his house will vote in the coming months on a much-anticipated bill raising the minimum wage gradually to $15 an hour.

Despite broad support among Democratic lawmakers for this big boost in the minimum wage, legislation has snagged on disagreements over whether certain categories of workers should be excluded.

Coughlin, D-Middlesex, said on radio station 1450 WCTC that he hopes to have a completed bill “in very short order” that the Assembly can vote on in December, at the earliest.

“If it doesn’t get done at the Dec. 17th voting session, then it will be done right after the new year, probably at the first voting session in January,” he said. “At least that’s my goal as of right now.”

Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, told NJ Advance Media on Friday that Coughlin has been drafting a bill that will become the basis for negotiations between the two houses.

Sweeney is hopeful the Legislature can meet the speaker’s timeline, he said.

“I’m going to work with the speaker and I expect to get it done,” Sweeney said. “I think we’ll get there pretty quick.”

New Jersey’s minimum wage is $8.60 an hour. It will rise 25 cents an hour to $8.85 on Jan. 1, based on a constitutional amendment tying annual increases to changes in the consumer price index.

Smoke has been bad. Unfortunately my wife is with my son in the Hospital up on Hyde for last week. They are giving out masks if you go outside.

Camp is most damage, but I don’t think it’s the largest geographical area yet. A lot of people stupidly build homes up in those hills. This happens nearly every year. When I lived out there, lots of fires up near Flint Ridge-La Canada. Yet people continue to live where they shouldn’t.

I visited Malibu after the 1993 fires, about 700 homes turned into ashes, entire streets of manions just gone. They always rebuild.

They continue to rebuild becuase the taxpayers are chipping in to pay for it.

I was at wedding in Napa in July, the smell of burning was everywhere and there were small fires breaking out in town and the sounds of firetrucks racing north. The San Fran crowd was in-town for the weekend to party on however, the crowds in the Napa area that weekend all were busy partying as tired and worn out firemen took a break nearby areas to eat and rest. Those partying were pretty much oblivious…

Why rebuild? Cause Miley Cyrus sez to.

    Worst case scenario, marshmallows!

  21. ExEssex says:

When we looking at homes especially in those two particular towns I noticed these berms huge hills that some of these homes where ‘planted’ in and of course the vegetation is completely dry and cracking under foot. I never really felt comfortable with that scenario and avoided those. We settled on a place that fortunately is next to a huge farm that is a buffer against of all the flames. The Thomas fire amp through very close last year with it’s acrid air and walls of flame. It tempers whatever giddiness one might feel at escaping the Nor’easters and various icy roads. But between you and me, it’s strange to be someplace that is so incredibly dry. Ever see the Spongebob where he runs out of water in the squirrel’s dome? Drier than you can ever imagine. Couple that with the density of homes in most places and once one goes up, everything nearby might as well too….some are 10 feet apart. We are a bit farther from the neighbors, our place was built in the 80’s. Remember the 80’s? Damn fine decade.
With a renovation and a sweet vista, it is really paradise sometimes. Cept, those pesky flames….

Internet etiquette articles are a vast wasteland of vanity, hypersensitivity and pseudo knowledge. Once in awhile they provide they provide a gold, comedy nugget..

Don’t use “I’m sorry”. Try “thank you”.

Instead of attempting to stop yourself from saying something altogether, the user suggests replacing that oft-repeated “I’m sorry” with two different words: Thank you. This flips the script and changes something that could be perceived as a negative mistake into a moment for you to express your gratitude and appreciation.

Comment to article: “Thank you for finding me sleeping with your sister.”

Bingo. Have to understand their bias, for most of them, the stock market is the only place to invest. They see real estate as a bad investment.

Real estate has been good to me….will not see me bash it. I know how well it can pay out. Off of 40,000, I made a lot.

  38. The Great Pumpkin says:

Between appreciation and rental income(300-400k on appreciation alone, never mind rental income), I have made hundreds of thousands of dollars over 18 years on my original 40,000 investment. It has its place in the investment world.

Since people always play this game on this blog….Had I invested that 40,000 in the stock market in 2000….I would prob have almost nothing being that the stock market busted soon after and then again in 2008. No way it comes close in this scenario.

When it comes to any investment, what matters is timing. You need luck, no way around it. Timing is everything.

Yes, you create your own luck, but no doubt about it, you need to be lucky. Anything can go wrong at any given time.
