Home Prices Hit Record High, Giving Sellers Much To Be Thankful For

Home prices hit an all-time high of $359,975 in the four-week period ending November 21, according to a new report from Redfin, a technology-powered real estate brokerage. This was up 14% year over year, the largest increase since early September.

Prices have risen in the past month nearly four times faster than they did at the same time last year. The unseasonable surge in home prices appears to be drawing in more sellers, as the number of homes listed for sale was down less than 3% from 2020 and up 11% from 2019.

“Rising rents and rising prices on everything from gas to groceries may be motivating more people to buy homes now,” said Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather. “Buying a home is a type of hedge against inflation, especially with mortgage rates still near historic lows. If high inflation persists, a large home mortgage could seem a lot less expensive in just a few years.”

If this is what heroes do, what exactly are cowards up to?

A police officer was arrested for attempting to hide the body of a 29-year-old nurse who he struck and killed on the Garden State Parkway, authorities said.

Louis Santiago, 25, an officer in Newark, was off duty when he swerved into the right shoulder and struck Damian Z. Dymka, of Garfield, on the northbound side of the parkway near Exit 151 around 3 a.m. on Nov. 1, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II said.

Neither Santiago nor his passenger, Albert Guzman, 25, of Newark, called 911 and instead, put Dymka’s body in the back of Santiago’s 2005 Honda Accord, Stephens said.

The pair then drove with the body to Santiago’s mom’s house to discuss what to do with the body, before returning to the scene, authorities said.

Santiago’s dad, a Newark police lieutenant, called 911and reported his son was in an accident

Santiago’s mom, Annette Santiago, 53, of Bloomfield, and Guzman were charged with conspiracy to desecrate human remains, hindering apprehension, and conspiracy to hinder apprehension and tamper with physical evidence.

    HMB,

Travel ban won’t help according to the experts. They are political ploys that have no impact on the spread. Sadly, vaccines are the best deterrent. Hesitancy is the enemy still.

  20. Libturd says:

Travel bans are not evidence-based: It may seem like travel bans are a necessary step, but I cannot stress enough that they do not work. For example, we had a travel ban with China in March 2020, only to be infiltrated with a European strain. Travel bans are a political move; a tool to show the public that the government is responding. Travel bans can do a lot of damage, though, like perpetuate disease related stigma. This variant has already spread. A travel ban is not an evidence-based solution.

Individual-level protection. None of this variant stuff changes what you need to do on an individual-level right now. Unless, of course, if you weren’t doing anything at all. Get vaccinated. Get boosted. Ventilate spaces. Use masks. Test if you have symptoms. Isolate if positive. And encourage others to do the same.

Immunocompromised: It looks like this variant has major implications of virus evolution in immunocompromised hosts. This underscores the need to ensure that immunocompromised people are protected by their communities. Not just for their sake, but for all of ours.

“Travel bans are not evidence-based: It may seem like travel bans are a necessary step, but I cannot stress enough that they do not work…”

Yet another case in which T was right and the dopes in charge now were wrong…

NYT 01/18/21 — “President Trump on Monday ordered an end to the ban on travelers from Europe and Brazil that had been aimed at stopping the spread of the coronavirus to the United States, a move quickly rejected by aides to President-elect Joseph R. Biden…Jennifer Psaki, the incoming White House press secretary for Mr. Biden, said the new administration would not allow Mr. Trump’s directives to take effect.
‘With the pandemic worsening, and more contagious variants emerging around the world, this is not the time to be lifting restrictions on international travel,’ Ms. Psaki tweeted…’On the advice of our medical team, the administration does not intend to lift these restrictions on 1/26’…”

The one trick pony thought Schiano was as well…when you are clueless, you are truly clueless.

  27. Libturd says:

    Joyce,

Admittedly, the science is changing with the mutations. The initial B variant was more droplet and the D and Nu variant are more aerosol. With that said, it is not so much an established distance than it is the conditions in the room. It still comes down to viral load and exposure time, which is why masks still serve to help reduce these things, as does plexiglass. But the best example I heard so far is the example of cigarette smoke. If you can see the smoke around you, than you are in close enough range to catch the virus. If you are outside, you would have to be directly in the smoke screen. If you are indoors, ventilation will help dissipate the smoke as will the distance you are away from the smoker. No ventilation in a small space and that smoke will float visibly in that room for minutes.

Still, the vaccines and monoclonals (if given early enough) are critically important. You don’t want to get any of these strains.

Someone who says the best way through is for everyone to expose themselves to the virus is patently false. The virus still needs to run it’s course, yes. Millions less will die or be seriously injured and even the symptoms and the length they last are all significantly reduced when your body has been exposed to the vaccines first.

And yes, if you lock yourself in your house, you won’t get it.

Robust demand is another reason the current housing market is unlikely to collapse anytime soon. The number of Americans who can reasonably afford a home, and are now looking to buy one, is rising even while inventory remains stagnant. The pandemic contributed to this in three ways: the number of new homes coming onto the market slowed as existing homeowners decided not to sell; emergency federal protection allowed people who had lost income to pause mortgage payments for a time, and supply chain and labor shortages left builders scrambling to get new houses up fast enough to meet demand.”
