Deal will allow condo project to proceed\

It’s all systems go for cleaning up chromium deposits in Bayonne’s northwest corner – which means the door is open for another big residential development.

The state Department of Environmental Protection and Honeywell are on the same page, with a plan to dig up and remove an unspecified amount of contaminants along the Newark Bay shoreline near the foot of West 54th Street, both parties said.

Honeywell spokeswoman Victoria Ann Streitfeld said the company – deemed to be the party responsible for the cleanup – “is working with the developer, under the jurisdiction of the state DEP, to remove chromium contaminated industrial fill that was widely used during the 1950s in roads and sewer line construction with approval from state and local governments.”

Streitfeld said the cleanup will begin in early 2007 and is expected to last no more than six months.

In November 2003, the Bayonne Planning Board greenlighted Baker’s project, “The Preserve,” 158 condominium units spread among five 4-story buildings, underground and surface parking, an outdoor pool, fitness center, and a small public park at the foot of West 53rd Street, all on a 3.8-acre tract. Baker principal Rob Holmes expects construction to begin “in late 2007.”
