Auto default crisis? Or not?

From Jalopnik:

It Sure Feels Like a Car Loan Crisis Is Coming

There could be bad news around the corner as more and more car buyers are having difficulty keeping up with auto loan payments.

According to a report from Automotive News, 1.63 percent of auto loans haven’t received a payment in at least 60 days. That number is 0.4 percent higher than it was the same time last year, and the highest in the past four years.

That being said, car loan default rates are still below pre-pandemic levels. Satyan Merchant, the Senior Vice President of TransUnion told the outlet that the increase can be attributed to changes in origination — or where borrowers stand in credit and spending.

Borrowers who took out auto loans in the second and third quarters of 2020 are keeping up with them better than pre-pandemic borrowers, according to TransUnion. But auto loans in the second and third quarters of 2021 are starting to show similar delinquency rates as debt from before COVID-19.

“There is slight worsening performance of recent vintages at a risk tier level when we isolate near-prime and above cohorts, and we suspect pandemic score migration may be playing a role,” Merchant said in a statement.

He gave the example of a subprime customer whose credit improved in 2020 and was near prime for a 2021 car loan but who now behaves more like a subprime consumer.

So, what does this tell us? Well, from the looks of it, more and more people are falling a month or two behind on their auto loans, but they are not letting the delinquencies lead to defaults. That’s a good thing. As for if this behavior issustainable? That’s sort of anyone’s guess.

Remember 2008, when everyone was unable to pay their mortgage? Feels familiar to me.

We’ll see what 2023 holds.

Walmart (WMT) – Walmart rallied 3.4% in premarket trading after reporting better-than-expected top and bottom line results for the second quarter. Comparable store sales also beat estimates, and Walmart projects adjusted earnings will fall slightly less this year than previously thought.

Anecdote – I’m hearing this from a lot of different areas. Lots of reversals of pessimistic forecasts, across my industry clients pulled back quickly, and then begged for the additional labor they asked be reduced, to be returned. In many cases, clients paid handsomely by requiring far more OT than normal as a result.

Walmart is not far off it’s all time high..

    – $160.77 in April…

As far as pessimistic reports on retail, not far off their sales were up 8% gross but margins down…sales gains came from inflation etc and belt tightening for cheaper goods. No more organic for you kids we go back to GMO products..no more brand named clothes and merchandise…

Speaking of brand name. My kid wanted these clown shoes for soccer cleats, they cost $150.

Amazon is fully devolving into AliExpress, it’s all garbage. What happened?

I was searching for a new pair of cycling shoes, I figured I’d just pop on Amazon since I knew I’d get them quick. Didn’t want to drive out to the bike shop for shoes.

I don’t even know what the hell the jibberish is that is coming up in the search. Half the brands were a mish-mosh of random characters. I’m not even trying to be insulting to foreign brands here, there were names like:

    NEOMQUOT
    GUOANFG
    Wnogfkue
    YUAnCC
    COOPCUP
    KSOKGOF
    WYUKN

What the hell? Is this some kind of way to scheme the Amazon system? It’s just all junk. When I search for anything in the brand I want, the prices are astronomical compared to what I can get locally.

    Amazon is done for.

I’m reading that salvage food stores are growing and expanding. These are the stores that sell dented cans, slightly beyond “best used by” dated foods, etc. for substantially cheaper prices. Grim- Amazon has annual growth rate of 25%-20% on ad revenues now estimates are $40 billion. The Chinese brands are flooding the searches with sponsored ads. Average click on an Amazon sponsored ad is $0.81 for every click. Lowest categorizes are like 5 cents per click, highest are 10 dollars per click..

They make up for it in the price and margin as you cannot shop these knockoffs elsewhere. Many of these companies keep local stock here and in California, they won’t miss out on the sale because of shipping time and costs.

To those of you planning on picking up a one or two year old used car next year, make sure the extended warranty is transferable. My Hyundai wasn’t. When i had warranty work done I had to sign an affidavit that I was the original owner. Otherwise the 100k warranty would have been downgraded to a 60k warranty if I remember correctly.

2 chairs, love seat and nice glass table. Metal frame spray coated, it will go into storage for next year and beyond I saved my old set purchased 10 years ago and touched up the paint, and bought new cushions on 50% clearance this year. The replacement cushions still cost me more than buying an entire new set and the cushions on the new set are still much more comfortable. BTW do not but the plastic faux wicker stuff, its made of cheap Polyethylene Plastic and the sunlight will cause it to fail. Chemical structure of polypropylene, has high degradation rate when exposed to UV light.

Another end of summer clearance item I picked up this time at Shop Rite was a new WT Intex simple spa hot tub for $299. These suckers were going for north of $1000 in the beginning of the season and now are listed -50% $481.64 was $959.99 on Amazon.

My unit is about 5 years old now and the air blower for the bubbles stopped working. I pulled the motor and attempted life saving surgery but alas the old fella did not make it too much rust in the windings etc. No parts anymore and even a scan of the motor turns up nothing compatible as it has to fit in a tight plastic case. Manufacturer is on version 5 of the control unit so I was out of luck $240 + shipping for a new control base. I was able to find the entire unit for $299 clearance this week at Shoprite, they moved them in front of the registers to get rid of them ASAP. New hot tub base will go into storage and I will use the new control unit on my old hot tub from now until I close it up around November. Having a pool party BBQ with soccer parents and kids this weekend at my place. We do a glow sticks, glow bracelets etc dance party for them when it gets dark, Maybe even some fireworks…always fun time.

  20. Fast Eddie says:

Wage inflation: I saw a classified ad in a local paper for a sandwich maker at $18 per hour. Okay, all fine and good for the workers but even that rate fails to come close to staying even with the rise in inflation. When the dems were calling for $15/hr. minimum wage, the argument against was that everything would rise in price to offset. The dems said it was ‘corporate greed/racism/insert emotion here’ to go against and that raising the rate will make for a stronger economy with more personal spending. Well, that $15/hr. is more like $8/hr. as everything non-biased economists said was evidently true.

-The Cheney Family goes down today. Liz mistakes msm praise for real people. Liz lines up here running backs and the jumbo blocker package and tries to do convert fourth-and inches. DJT’s d-line is shutting it down today in WY.

Dems voted today to have the IRS lift gig economy people by the ankles and shake them until coins fall out of their pockets. Recent establishment politics made it so that Venmo and such need to 1099 at $600/year of commercial earnings through their product. So, they are sweeping up operations including the most-fledgling and smallest entrepreneurs amongst us. Disgraceful.

Did the establishment put energy into encouraging these businesses to start and grow so they can meet consumer needs and create employment? No. They are going to send out heart-stopping IRS letters instead. How many people out there just give it up “I make $2000 a year from my Online art store, but I need to hire a cpa and pay $1000 for tax preparation, so forget this”. Maybe that online art store would have grown into something beautiful, Schumer and Manchin.

But, of course, the Establishment keeps Carried interest, stepped-up basis and an estate tax exemption of like $20 million!

I thought Ds were supposed to stand with the little guy? Nope, they need the money to waste on nonsense and to line the pockets of the scum insiders and the lowest socioeconomic ppl amongst us. So, I suppose the Ds stand with some portion of the economic 1% and the bottom 10%. That’s it.

They also have an incredibly condescending attitude that they know best. Many also believe that their side is far more educated and sophisticated than the right, and while I agree there are many ignorant people on the right, there are just as many on the left. Let’s see how the hearing goes Thursday, the warrant itself is useless in a defense only the affidavit really matters, as any lies or misstatements made will be found there. This has the beginnings of another clusterfuck for the FBI and DOJ, almost as bad as a warrant to raid and search a reporters home over a diary.

    Ouchie.

Looks like old scarecrow Liz Cheney took two torpedoes into the starboard side.

    Bam!

Her father was a criminal as well. Good riddance.

    10:20 . . .

Forget Uber, the gig economy includes people who cut hair in their garage. THAT is where the dems are aiming 80,000 new IRS agents while they leave in place carried intereat, stepped-up basis and $20m+ estate tax exemption. I simply posit that the Ds missed the mark on this issue.

They want to audit Sally for receiving $1,420 from Venmo for cutting hair in her garage with no filed 1065 while eight and nine-figure fortunes are accumulated and inherited with surprising low taxes.

The establishment wanted your bank to file a report if you had $10k in annual cash in or out. There was an outcry that shut that down. But, the establishment slipped in tbe 1099 for $600 of commercial activity on Venmo, zelle, cash app, PayPal, etc. and now 80,000 more agents aimed at people making $200k/year or less. Sick! Sad!

    Ding, dong the witch . . .

May Liz Cheney crawl into a private nook and stay there, never to be heard from again. Just like HRC should have after the 2016 election.

May she always be remembeeed for selling out America, selling out her constituents, and doing what she wanted for her own enrichment rather than for the well-being of the USA, the state of WY, the people of Iraq, and the list goes on.

One more establishment ghoul goes down.

    And so it begins.

  68. Phoenix says:

No Eddie, it started already. Wake up and watch this:
