Jobs Day

From CNBC:

Friday’s jobs report likely will show hiring cooled in May. Here’s what to expect

There seems little doubt now that hiring slowed considerably in May as companies and consumers braced for higher tariffs and elevated economic uncertainty. The main question is by how much.

A small dip from the recent trend likely wouldn’t be viewed as worrisome. But anything beyond that could set off a fresh round of fears about the labor market and broader economy, possibly pushing the Federal Reserve into a quicker-than-expected interest rate action.

Economists expect that when the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the May nonfarm payroll numbers Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET, they will show a gain of just 125,000, down from an initial tally of 177,000 in April and the year-to-date monthly average of 144,000. That represents a slide but not a collapse, and markets will hinge on the degree of decline.

“Going into the NFP print, expectations have been reset lower and a reading of around 100,000 (vs. the 125,000 expected by the consensus) could fall in the ‘not-as-bad-as-feared’” camp, wrote Julien Lefargue, chief market strategist at Barclays Private Bank. “Anything below the 100,000 mark could reignite recession fears, while a stronger-than-expected print could perversely be negative for risk assets as it would likely put upward pressure on [Treasury] yields.”

Consequently, the report will be a balancing act between competing concerns of a slowing labor market and rising inflation.

    https://www.nj.com/news/2025/06/nj-will-offer-direct-relief-to-help-residents-with-soaring-electric-bills-murphy-says.html

All New Jersey electric customers will receive “direct relief” to help deal with soaring soaring electric bills as the warmer months return, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Thursday at a press conference in Newark.

The governor said the state will spend $430 million to subsidize the relief to all of New Jersey’s 3.9 million ratepayers, with most customers getting $100. Low-to-moderate income earners may get up to $250 for their electric bills.

All the money printing and borrowing got out of control probably around the time of the housing crisis and Great Recession that followed. We printed our way to prosperity, QE and ZIRP don’t worry we can borrow lots of money at unbelievably low interest rates, because the FED has our backs with ZIRP, hey you don’t want the bonds at auction the FED will buy them! That was a one trick pony folks…using the FED to print money to fund government.

The idea that we have to cut spending eventually and grow our way out of this debt trap we are in. Completely forgotten by the current Democrats and Republicans.

  24. Juice Box says:

Just remember one thing about this legislation, something Elon may not really understand. This is a reconciliation bill. It’s a shortcut to the budget process or really any legislative process.

Elon is right we need to get more responsible with the out of control spending, but there can really be no changes to policy in this bill.

The rules as written are for thee not for me….

There is a Senate rule “Byrd rule” that prohibits non-budgetary provisions like Social Security changes from being included in a reconciliation bill. For example if they wanted to raise the age of eligibility for Social Security by 1 month only the Senate could not include it in their version of this bill. Senators will raise a point of order against provisions they believe violate the Byrd rule. If the point of order is sustained, the offending provision is removed or the whole thing is tossed out the window. There is little wiggle room in a reconciliation bill like this to change policy and actually cut spending.

The entire Congress is effectively broken. Other than naming a post office little gets voted on individually on it’s merits anymore, everything is giant omnibus bills and reconciliation bills between the houses.

There needs to be a 3rd viable political party..

  35. JUice Box says:

Phoenix – Don’t believe the hype.. Elon was already wealthy no government money involved. When Paypal was bought by eBay back in 2002 Elon was able to cash out his 11% share for about 175 million which he later invested into Tesla and SpaceX… He effectively bankrupted himself investing in those two companies. It paid off for him, few thought he would get anywhere near selling a million electric cars a year or a reusable lower cost rocket that has flown about 450 successfully missions so far.

BTW the original $7,500 federal tax credit for electric cars has a cap once a number of units are sold. TESLA was phased out back seven years ago in 2018 for models Model S, Model X, and Model 3. That year they sold 245,491 electric vehicles and passed the cap in the law.

Did NASA and Federal spending help SpaceX? Absolutely, and we are better off because of it. The United Launch Alliance the only real competition is more expensive by far and isn’t much use for NASA or Military launches, too few and too expensive.

Funny thing about Space X. Jeff Bezos is building his own satellite internet company called Kuiper to compete with Elon. Bezos is now using Space X to launch his Kuiper satellites… Bezo’s little d@@@i@@k spacecraft cannot get it up.

The clock is ticking for a Middlesex County town to comply with the state’s new affordable housing rules as the plan to take a farm by eminent domain comes under intense public scrutiny.

Cranbury Township faces a June 30 deadline to come up with a plan to build 265 affordable housing units under its Mount Laurel affordable housing obligations. The state changed the requirements in terms of public sewer and water, proximity to mass transportation, and a 250 square foot warehouse/distribution center buffer zone that had limited the township’s options, according to Mayor Lisa Knierim.

I love these governments. They don’t let you sell your farmland because they want to preserve the land…until they want your land to build housing on it themselves and take it from you.

What files? Before the FBI showed up with warrants at his many homes all the computers and other digital evidence was removed. Nothing but Computer Monitor wires dangling apparently. The FBI was never able to get the computers or any other video, photos or digital evidence. Rumor was those computers were in the possession of Epstein’s lawyers. Alan Dershowitz for example negotiated his original plea deal for a slap on the wrist in 2008. The time frame for the first FBI investigation in Florida was 2005 until 2008 plea deal. FBI did not get the computer or videos….20 years have passed those hard drives and any videos or other photos have long since been destroyed. The rich and powerful take care of the rich and powerful no matter how twisted or illegal the behavior. Dershowitz himself is also accused by one of Epstein’s victims.

On Normandy landings, finally walked some of the beach a couple of years ago with a historian who specialized in WW2 and Omaha beach tours. Terrible thing, it was a day when almost all the plans went wrong, but eventually they overcame, at a high cost of lives. One of the things I learned is that the aircraft bombing the German defenses ahead of the invasion were just terribly inaccurate, hardly helped at all, relative to expectations. There were many allied countries sent along the coast, and unfortunately the Americans appeared to land into the most fortified spot, while those who landed only 1km further north had an easier time. The historian suggested “The Longest Day” as being close enough to accurate, though there were definitely liberties taken. He didn’t seem as fond of Saving Private Ryan.
A good movie to watch before “The Longest Day” would be “Dunkirk” which comes earlier in WW2 when the British army evacuated France, covered from the perspective of military men, which itself could be coupled with “The Darkest Hour” which covers the same moment in history from Churchill’s political perspective.
    Thus I’d suggest in order:
Dunkirk, (UK military fleeing from France)
    The Darkest Hour (Churchill’s perspective)
The Longest Day (Re-invasion of France)
Then maybe Patton (Big picture of WW2 with US already in Europe)
There’s also the Band of Brothers miniseries
    Anyone have other suggestions?

Chi – I don’t believe it’s scripted. Elon has been harping on the deficit spending for a while now longer than last summer that is for sure when he decided to back Trump and the other republicans with $173 million in robo calls, text messages, print mailings and canvassing etc.

Here are the outlays of his America PAC, you can see where his money went.

Look even the government’s own Government Accountability Office also routinely makes recommendations for departments and programs that its researchers estimate could save the federal government hundreds of billions per year.

It’s all routinely ignored in annual budget talks by Congress and the special interests…

Elon took it all on and LOST. The whole purpose of DOGE and him working for the government for 130 days as a special government employee was to cut deficit spending. Now the reality of Washington DC is hitting nothing is being done, they would rather put it on our children, and grand children spend the money now, business as usual and not one cent of deficit spending reduction. We are just going to spend even more and more…

Things will break…I have been talking about it for years. Austerity will come….

  75. RentL0rd says:

Elon would have been in prison along with Trump if they lost. So it was a fight for survival and then they gutted all agencies that were going after his companies.

    Trump legalized his crypto scam.

This sounds blunt and crude but thats what happened. Now the two felons are trying to bring each other down.

  76. Juice Box says:

Interesting bunch running in the Democratic Primary for Mayor of NYC. We are 18 days or so from the Primary, and it’s going to be Ranked Choice Voting too…choose up to five candidates in order of preference. There will be 11 candidates on the Ballot…

    Adrienne Adams
    Selma Bartholomew
    Michael Blake
    Andrew Cuomo
    Brad Lander
    Zohran Mamdani
    Zellnor Myrie
    Paperboy Love Prince
    Jessica Ramos
    Scott Stringer
    Whitney Tilson

So Zohran Mamdani is currently in second place in the polling behind Andrew Cuomo and has been endorsed by AOC. We could actually see NYC’s first Muslim Socialist mayor who promises he will soak the rich in NYC…..

I don’t think Cuomo will win…If I lived in NYC I would think Paperboy Prince might gets some votes too, again people are encouraged to choose 5 candidates out of 11 choices. He is for a $2,000 monthly universal-basic-income payments for every resident, free healthcare and a “mansion” public housing and also a 3½-day work week. What is not to like?

  77. RentL0rd says:

    >> Elon took it all on and LOST. The whole purpose of DOGE and him working for the government for 130 days as a special government employee was to cut deficit spending.

    That’s a joke, right?

It may be a side effect of gutting the agencies that were going after him. You know if they really wanted to cut spending it would be on military, extra-terrestrial jaunts, medicare. Not destroy functioning parts of the govt.

  78. 3b says:

Juice: I think people will get confused with rank choice voting, although to me it seems straightforward. Voters in Alaska struggled with it, but I am sure there are those who think it was because they are ignorantly uneducated Republican.

It’s ballsy for Cuomo to be running, he needs to go away. If AOC s choice wins, he will make Di Blasio look like a red blooded Republican.

  79. Juice Box says:

Rent – Have you ever heard of Congress accepting a rescission?

For 56 years now the executive branch has not been able to cancel any appropriated spending. They money must be spent unless Congress votes to take it back known as a rescission.

When is the last time they did that? The last time Congress actually voted on a presidential rescission request was in Fiscal Year 2000, when President Bill Clinton proposed a rescission, but it was ultimately rejected, spend the money anyway they said. This was the last time the formal rescission process was used by a president. While President Trump tried in 2018 Congress refused to even act and create a bill to vote on it!

You see there is no working mechanism for efficiency in our Government not one penny appropriated can be saved it all must be spent and much is wastefully so. The system is rigged for inflation and deficit spending, without fail…even recession spending cuts aren’t allowed the FED will come to the rescue with QE and ZIRP right?

We are setting ourselves up for a massive crash…much bigger than the housing bubble bust and great recession. One that we cannot print and borrow our way out of.

  80. RentL0rd says:

    Juice,

The point is, these cuts and rescission are a by product of other goals. And smoke and mirrors for the maga consumption. Like I said, why are there no cuts in places where it would actually matter?

And of-course it is convenient to get a divorce now after the damage is done.

  81. White Trash Eddie says:

Elon would have been in prison along with Trump if they lost.

  82. Juice Box says:

Rent – DOGE claims 75,000 early retirements and 200,000 layoffs and lots of vendor contract spending cuts…All illegal and criminal right?

Guess what the sky is not falling in Washington DC. It’s party on a celebration is being had this weekend, victory over Elon Musk!! He is gone from Washington, no more sleeping in the Lincoln bedroom!

Nothing to see here so don’t bother to look. Once the Senate approves their bill this month and reconciliation occurs they all agree to shake hands and add just keep buying more Champagne and Caviar. The grand kids are paying for it…..so party on…

  83. Juice Box says:

We all know he is going to do it..”Powell your fired”

“President Donald Trump urged Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to slash interest rates by a full percentage point.”

Does not mean I am always correct…I would say maybe somewhat better than 1/2 of the time of the time….but that is still better than being wrong most of the time.

I don’t want to be right about austerity, but this is a reality is facing us now. Social Security trust fund will be depleted in about 8 years. Debt will be hovering around 50 Trillion or so by then. Are we going to be able to continue to borrow 1/3 of our annual government expenditures to keep the elderly happy and healthy? Austerity for the old will probably be here already when I hit retirement. Full Retirement Age (FRA) was supposed to be 67 years old, they will push it a few more years again by then too.

I am recommending everyone plan accordingly, especially those that plan to only rely on a government pension.

But heck what do I know…I could be just some alarmist kook on the internet…..

The number of people who said they were unemployed in May jumped to an eight-year high if the pandemic era is excluded, offering clear evidence that jobs have become harder to find during a chaotic period for the U.S. economy.

Last month some 7.24 million people said they were unemployed, the government reported, meaning that they were looking for work but couldn’t find a job.

Just a few years earlier, the number of unemployed had fallen to a 23-year low of 5.75 million.

Juice: Your points are well taken and always backed with facts, not rhetoric or hyperbole. I too have been screaming about the debt for years, I thought it would have happened already, but I was wrong. Of course the Fed has been prolonging it. I think we would have been better to have a real cleansing during the last financial crisis, rather than manipulating by the Fed. But, the madness continued. Unfortunately today, being a skeptic is viewed by some as secretly being for other side.

Garcia is back from El Salvador to stand trial on criminal charges. And I assume if he is found guilty, then he can be deported, or if he is not guilty then he gets to stay, or if he is deported it can only be to a 3rd country, like the first deportation ruling.

This makes absolutely no sense, and erodes confidence in the justice system. The first time around he should have either been deported, or given amnesty.

Elon Musk and hundreds of other tech mavens wrote an open letter two years ago about how AI was coming to ‘automate away all the jobs’ and upend society.

It looks like we should have listened to them.

Layoffs are sweeping America, nixing hundreds of thousands of jobs at Microsoft, Walmart, and other titans. The newly jobless speak of a ‘bloodbath’ on the scale of the pandemic.

This time, it’s not blue-collar and factory workers getting whacked — it’s college graduates with white-collar jobs in tech, finance, law, and consulting.

Entry-level jobs are vanishing the fastest — stoking fears of recession and a generation of disillusioned graduates left stranded with CVs no one wants.

College grads are now much more likely to be unemployed than others, official data show.

Global outplacement Challenger, Gray & Christmas on Thursday released a report that said there were 93,816 job cuts announced by U.S. employers in May. That amounts to an increase of 47% from 63,816 announced last May, while last month’s figure was down 12% from 105,441 cuts in April.

That brings the total number of job cuts announced this year to 696,309 — an increase of 80% from the 385,859 jobs cut in the first five months of 2024. This year’s total is just 65,049 job cuts away from matching the 2024 annual total.
