Report: Home prices hit record high in Suffolk; Nassau market slows slightly
The average price for a house in Nassau last month was $810,000 and the average price of a single-family home is up to $690,000 in Suffolk.
According to by OneKey MLS, the median price of a single-family home in Suffolk in May was $690,000, up 6.2% from last year.
The average price for a house in Nassau last month was $810,000. The number is still up from this time last year, but not a record high.
Nassau’s all-time high was $835,000. That number was hit last August.
Huntington-based realtor Nick Orlando says it’s now common to see someone go at least $100,000 over asking price.
“That’s what’s really keeping prices up, are these few buyers that are just really trying to be as competitive as possible,” he said.
Part of the reason why prices of homes in Suffolk are more expensive now, according to realtors, is that prices in Nassau are even higher, causing people to house hunt further east and creating more demand.

The US Social Security and Medicare programs for seniors will both run short of funds to pay full benefits in 2033.
The go-broke dates the two trust funds have moved up due to rising health care costs and new legislation affecting Social Security benefits, according to an annual report released Wednesday.
The yearly assessment found that Medicare’s hospital insurance trust fund will be unable to fully cover costs beginning in 2033 — three years earlier than last year’s estimate.
Higher-than-forecast hospitalizations of Americans over 65 years old was a key factor.
Social Security’s combined trust funds, which support retirement and disability benefits to 70 million Americans, are also expected to be depleted in 2033.
While the year was unchanged from last year’s report, it was advanced by three calendar quarters within that year.
The projections reflect higher-than-expected healthcare spending, along with recent legislation that increased Social Security benefits for some workers.
Once the funds are exhausted, beneficiaries would still receive payments, but at reduced levels. Medicare would be able to cover just 89 percent of hospital costs, while Social Security could pay only about 81 percent of promised benefits.
The co-founder of Home Depot has issued a dire warning about the state of the US economy.
Ken Langone, who co-founded the DIY giant in 1978, warned that US debt is spiraling out of control and was a ‘scary’ indicator for the state of the economy.
‘Look at the amount of debt we raise every year,’ Langone told Fox Business.
‘What is it today? Thirty-six, thirty-seven [trillion dollars], going up a trillion a year in interest alone. That’s scary,’ he told the outlet.
The billionaire said he hoped Washington would heed his warning that ‘we have to be mindful of the importance of our status in the world economy and the world markets.
‘If we fritter that away, we’re in trouble,’ the 89-year-old said.
‘Four weeks ago, we couldn’t float a 20-year bond. They were unbiased. That’s a dangerous signal. That’s the beginning,’ Langone said referencing recent crises in the bond market.
