Will Amazon layoffs crash the Washington market?

From KIRO:

Amazon layoff announcement affecting real estate market

The real estate market is already starting to feel the impact of the massive layoffs at Amazon as some homeowners and buyers begin scrambling to deal with the fallout.

KIRO 7 spoke with a pair of real estate brokers whose clients were among those laid off. They are already getting calls about selling their homes or calling off their hunt for a new one.

“We’ve been fielding calls left and right since the very, very early morning,” Adriano Tori, a real estate broker in Bellevue, said.

Tori, the founder and CEO of RexMont Real Estate, has been buying and selling homes for more than 20 years. In that time, he has seen plenty of layoffs and turbulent times.

A shakeup like this, though, is rare.

“We haven’t seen anything of this magnitude in the last few years,” he said.

Tori told KIRO 7 he is already getting calls from clients who were laid off from Amazon, trying to figure out how best to move forward. Some are considering renting their home to supplement their lost income. Others are considering selling and moving on to a new city in hopes of finding a new job.

“These new developments in the job market will, at least for the next few months, make it more of a buyer’s market,” Tori said.

So, will these layoffs affect housing prices around the Sound? According the Tori, the biggest drops in prices will be among houses priced between $1 million and $2 million, not more reasonably-priced homes.

Almost 100,000 fighting-age men have fled Ukraine in the last two months after President Volodymyr Zelensky relaxed the rules to allow young men to leave the country.

Poland’s border guard said 99,000 Ukrainian men aged 18 to 22 have crossed the border since August.

The new rules mean men between the ages of 18 and 22 are no longer barred from leaving Ukraine.

Previously, men between 18 and 60 had been obliged to stay by law since the onset of the war.

The martial law was introduced to ensure the army had enough manpower to defend the country against Russia’s onslaught.

The migration wave to Poland is a huge jump from the 45,300 who entered Poland in the half a year before August.

Many continue to Germany, piling pressure on Friedrich Merz, the chancellor, to slash support for refugees.

I’m picturing this massive megalopolis structure built over the route 4 and 17 junction. 195,000 apartments, so massive that you’re driving through a series of tunnels while the behemoth is straddles you.

As a former auto finance professional that dealt with insurance claims for a captive finance company there are a couple of reasons why the insurance company is doing this. That battery pack is almost worth gold. Undamaged battery packs of that size routinely sell for 8 to 10k damaged and up to 16k for undamaged to the recyclers. Them automatically declaring every EV a total loss allows them to artificially inflate insurance rates on EV’s thus allowing a profit even with total loss payoffs (this goes deep and not getting into but yes profits). Negligence on the insurance company is definitely there however a small consideration. I’ve had to walk insurance companies through their own procedures, options on the vehicle, and what the vehicle actually is.

As to the inflation numbers. I don’t believe them one iota. I was at Home Depot this morning picking up the wainscoting. The wood wainscot is like $100 per linear foot. I opted for PVC at $50 per foot. It’s going to go down to the basement which flooded once and once painted, looks identical to wood. Still, didn’t think this was a $50 per foot project. I was fortunate that Capital One was offering a Home Depot gift card, so I was able to get $400 of the $500 material cost in Capital One portal rebates from the past year. He already conceded 20% of their tariff and got absolutely nothing in return. Then he announces he needs to resume nuclear testing to keep up with them. What a jackass. You have absolutely no leverage to raise tariffs when you have a 300 billion trade deficit with them. And domestic manufacturing continues to shrink. Wasn’t that what these tariffs were all about in the first place?

Getting back to the economic conversation we had yesterday. I was thinking more about how companies can be growing earnings while the economy is in the shitter. Then I realized, it’s all AI spending juicing federal revenue. Our Wonderful Senator Booker makes the funnies…

“WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democrats have taken a bold stand by vowing to starve as many food stamp recipients as it takes to get free healthcare for illegal immigrants.

According to prominent Democratic leaders, starving a couple million kids is a small price to pay to ensure that blue states continue to provide free healthcare to illegal immigrants.

“If you’re going to make an omelette, you’ve got to crack a few eggs. And if you’re going to give free healthcare to illegal immigrants, you’ve got to let some children go hungry,” said Senator Cory Booker. “Honestly, who cares? Kids can’t vote. Plus, they’re very resilient, they can dig around in some dumpsters, or forage for berries or whatever. Cry harder.”

Booker’s statement was echoed by other intellectual pillars of the Democrat Party.

“It’s, like, not hard for kids to find food. There are stores literally filled with food,” said Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “Some food even grows in the ground, and the ground is everywhere, so technically, they can get food from anywhere. You just, like, dig the food out of the ground or whatever.”

At publishing time, Democrats had vowed to personally go to grocery stores to filibuster poor people attempting to buy food.”

I bought four of them because cheesesteaks are so unhealthy. Oh my god, this stuff was the bomb. So not greasy. Not quite getting Geico to pay to treat for the Clap, but almost as great as getting it.

We often find a lot of processed frozen lunches marked down to a dollar or yogurts to a quarter. Another place to look is at the deli/appetizing. Often people order the deli and then don’t pick it up. I’ll never pay the deli for sliced cheese, but when it’s 50% off because it’s the ends or cut poorly, I finally get the real thing.

Giralo said that these messenger ballots are being abused; the homeless in Atlantic City and Pleasantville have been approached with money and food to cast fraudulent ballots.

With support from Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson, Giralo is demanding that state lawmakers re-strengthen election laws to stop the abuse.

I like to buy the Roast Beef Cold Cut ends. They sell them for $1 a pound. Sometimes, they have 3 lbs worth. I slice it up, cook it, and turn it into french dip sandwiches. I pull the horseradish root out of the ground and grate it on top. One of the best things IMO.

The Pumpkin is right. Both do it, but differently.

Democrats generally have a political machine with workers that canvass and do favors for the housebounds. One of those favors is helping them vote the right way. I’m sure Fat Eddie’s public job dependent extended family knows how to do this very well, courtesy of the Jersey City machine.

Republicans use money to hire people to canvass. They don’t do favors. What they do is harrass people. In NJ, anyone remember Gov. Tom Kean’s 1981 campaign and the use of GOP paid uniformed cops outside of the poll area to intimidate voters.

Down in dixieland they did that in the past and soon will do it very loudly. I expect Border Patrol/Ice jerk offs asking for citizen papers near voting areas.

Chipotle lowered sales forecast for the third time this year as the stock has now tumbled almost 40% from the high. Trust me the economy is fine.

So how do you have Nuclear tests if you have gutted and shut down the Department of Energy. I’ll put this with Donnies Infrastructure Week from his last admin. Pipe dream that will never happen.

Usually when a US president meets with the Chinese, you are clutching pearls and screaming about the Uyghurs. Is that only when its a Dem president?

“Man, that NVDA paid off pretty well. Jumped in during the “deepseek” panic.”

I jumped in when the Deepseek delay was announced. I knew that when they did deliver that stock would bounce hard. So I’m double on you. Not bragging, but its more the nose bleed I’m dealing with. I also piled in to the other Chip makers and rode the same gains. My AMD is out in front of, Nvidia and my Intel is not to far behind.

I need to get out of this ASAP. My biggest fear and what will tip the cart is the first time one of them have said they oversold their capacity. Given what Nvidia have announced as large deals, I suspect they may miss on delivery. That will trigger the fall.

  90. Libturd says:

    Fab,

Put some into ASML then. They are the guys who build the chip making machines.

My dad started piling into NVIDA about ten years ago. He turned 5K into about 200K. Shame is that he died before it doubled yet again. Of course, I sold off about half of it at its last peak in the mid 140s cause mom wanted to give me some money. I should have taken the shares.

  94. Fabius Maximus says:

    Lib,

One of my bosses laments the days he held Nvidia at $2 and took the modest gains.

ASML would scare me more. What way do they pivot. Put a plant in the US at high cost low margin or outside and let the others take the tariff hit. IS the demand going to be there long term when the bubble bursts.

The high school kids are all sour on Chipotle, disenfranchised by the high price and declining portions/quality.

Chi, the horseradish root is rather thallic.

NVDA has been great, and can drop off the side of the cliff if Xi decides to take his coveted island. I think he’s going to wait until NVDA is 50% of the S&P before doing so.
