Hollowing Out

From Fortune:

Both subprime and super prime loans are on the rise, signs of a K-shaped economy that is a ‘prescription for real trouble’

The share of consumers taking out the riskiest form of loans has reached its highest peak this decade, a sign of growing financial stress for many Americans.

The share of consumers taking on subprime loans accounted for 14.4% of borrowers in 2025’s third quarter, up from 13.9% from the same period in 2024 and the highest since 2019, according to a TransUnion report released Monday, which analyzes consumer credit data. About 25% of the U.S. population has a FICO credit score below 660, meaning they are subprime, according to Apollo chief economist Torsten Sløk, citing data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

The share of consumers in the subprime credit risk category fell during the pandemic as government stimulus helped many Americans pay down their debt. But as the subprime tier swells once more, it adds to signs that many are facing increased financial pressure: The percentage of subprime borrowers at least 60 days late on auto loan payments has reached 6.43%, double what it was in 2021, according to Fitch Ratings. Per property data firm ATTOM, August marked the sixth straight month of year-over-year rising home foreclosure filings.

But the struggles of many borrowers don’t tell the full story. TransUnion also reported a growing share of super prime borrowers—which increased from 37.1% in 2019’s third quarter to 40.9% in the same period this year. The credit market has also expanded, growing the number of super prime borrowers by 16 million since 2019. These borrowers have higher credit scores and are likely to get more favorable loan terms, such as lower loan interest rates and higher credit limits.

Additionally, consumer-level delinquencies declined seven basic points year over year to 2.37%, indicating strengthening consumer credit health, the report noted.

“We are seeing a divergence in consumer credit risk, with more individuals moving toward either end of the credit risk spectrum,” Jason Laky, executive vice president and head of financial services for TransUnion, said in the report. “This shift suggests that while many consumers are navigating the current economic climate well, others may be facing financial strain.”

Porsche’s billion-dollar loss last week isn’t just a setback for one of the world’s most profitable automakers—it’s a warning shot for the entire luxury economy. After years of record profits fueled by cheap credit and post-pandemic “revenge spending,” the German carmaker’s sudden slowdown shows that even the world’s most coveted brands are losing altitude as global demand cools.

  12. Ex says:

The company reported a €966 million ($1.1 billion) quarterly loss and a 99 percent drop in operating profit for the first nine months of 2025, marking its first decline in years. Porsche blamed weak demand in China, slowing electric vehicle (EV) sales and rising tariff costs. It also announced a pause in its EV expansion and the departure of longtime CEO Oliver Blume from his role at Porsche AG.

Porsche has long been one of the crown jewels of its parent company, Volkswagen Group, which also owns Bentley and Lamborghini. The brand occupies a unique niche in VW’s lineup, combining exclusivity with scale. SUVs like the Cayenne and Macan transformed Porsche from a niche sports-car maker into a global luxury powerhouse.

Profits surged to record highs after the pandemic, buoyed by aspirational buyers who stretched into luxury purchases when credit was cheap and consumer sentiment was high. Now, as those forces unwind, Porsche is facing a reckoning.

Porsche’s China business, which once accounted for nearly 20 percent of its global sales, shrank by more than 20 percent in the first nine months of 2025, Bloomberg reported, amid weak demand and growing competition from local automakers like BYD and Xiaomi. (The company isn’t alone. BMW recently cut its earnings forecast, citing costs tied to China and U.S. tariffs. Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz have also reported similar headwinds.

Math teachers at a high school in Arizona have received hundreds of threats after social media posts circulated over the weekend alleging that their Halloween costumes mocked the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to school officials.

The costume, worn Friday by a group of math teachers at Cienega High School in Vail, Arizona, southeast of Tucson, featured T-shirts with fake blood and the words “Problem Solved” on the front. The shirt was not meant to be a reference to Kirk but to solving math problems, the superintendent said, and teachers wore the same costume last year.

  39. ExplainsFatEddie SmallCon says:

    From The Atlantic snippet

During Trump’s first term Adam Serwer wrote a justly celebrated article for The Atlantic titled “The cruelty is the point.” He argued that cruelty, and the joy some people take from inflicting cruelty, are what bind Trump’s most loyal supporters to him:

Trump’s only true skill is the con; his only fundamental belief is that the United States is the birthright of straight, white, Christian men, and his only real, authentic pleasure is in cruelty. It is that cruelty, and the delight it brings them, that binds his most ardent supporters to him, in shared scorn for those they hate and fear: immigrants, black voters, feminists, and treasonous white men who empathize with any of those who would steal their birthright. The president’s ability to execute that cruelty through word and deed makes them euphoric. It makes them feel good, it makes them feel proud, it makes them feel happy, it makes them feel united.

Serwer was thinking of working-class and middle-class Trump supporters, many of whom are voting against their own economic interests. But you can see the same joy in cruelty, not just in Trump, but in most of his top minions, from Stephen Miller and JD Vance to Tom Homans, Kristi Noem, Pam Bondi and Pete Hegseth. All of them clearly take a smirking satisfaction in their ability to stick it to the poor and powerless.

What about the guests at the party? What about the oligarchs abasing themselves at Trump’s feet? Some of them may share in the cruelty of Trump’s inner circle. Most probably just don’t care about other people’s suffering, certainly not enough to risk Trump’s wrath by protesting or even failing to show up.

So, to repeat, the party at Mar a Lago wasn’t a case of tone deafness, living it up despite others’ suffering. It was in large part a party held to celebrate others’ suffering.

As it happens, the obscenity in Florida took place at a time when a number of centrist pundits were engaging in their favorite sport, berating Democrats for being out of touch with ordinary Americans. As usual, their critique seems to be aimed at a right-wing caricature of the party rather than actually existing Democrats. But in any case, has any important Democrat ever done anything as remotely out of touch as Trump’s Halloween bash?

Will Trump and his friends pay any political price for this gross exercise in arrogance? They may believe that soon they won’t have to care what voters think. MAGA probably won’t be able to rig today’s vote, but it may believe that it will have thoroughly undermined democracy by the time the midterms roll around.

In any case, what’s remarkable and depressing is how successful so-called “populists” have been despite their obvious contempt for the little people.

You have to understand crypto is volatile. This is what they do. The only people who make money in crypto have nerves of steel and the patience to go with it. I would never recommend crypto to someone like you that can’t handle the swings.

I promise you it will go off hard…why? Liquidity. Only a matter of time before it floods. They (MM’s and whale traders) do this every single time before a massive run up. Like clockwork. Understand that MM’s and whales need to feed on the majority. This is how they feed. They shake the tree down…steal the cheap shares and then sell them back to the individuals who sold at a much higher price. It never fails.

Understand we are in a rate cut environment. You have a govt shutdown contributing to lack of liquidity right now. When it opens up, along with the end to QT, high risk will attract this liquidity. It’s going to be glorious. Rip people’s face off. Crypto is where you want to be buying now…..my two cents.

AI does not need crypto to transact.

AP2 and Trusted Agent Protocol are the leading protocols for agentic financial transactions.

They don’t require crypto or mainstream crypto blockchains.

  79. The Great Pumpkin says:

    Grim,

    X402 is coming…

“AI agents can transact without blockchain using traditional systems or centralized APIs, especially for regulated or high-value payments. However, blockchain’s low-cost, trustless, and auditable nature makes it ideal for autonomous micropayments and decentralized agent economies. The choice depends on the use case: **x402** for cheap, instant crypto payments; **AP2** for secure, payment-agnostic frameworks; or centralized systems for simplicity/compliance. Hybrid approaches (e.g., AP2 + x402) are emerging as the standard for scalable agent commerce.”

  80. The Great Pumpkin says:

    Grim,

And I am not saying I know more than you on this…so don’t take it that way.

  81. The Great Pumpkin says:

    “The million dollar question:

What is happening crypto right now?

Crypto markets have now officially erased over -$1 TRILLION of market cap since October 6th.

    But why?

The answer to this question seems to be more technical than fundamental.

That is, crypto adoption is still at record highs, de-regulation is in full swing, and technology is advancing rapidly.

However, leverage is at unprecedented levels which is amplifying moves in the market, such as the $20B liquidation seen on October 10th.

As a result, when uncertainty arises or technical momentum fades, downward swings are amplified.

300,000 traders are being liquidated PER DAY on average and the market has evolved into its most reactive form in history amid Trump posts and headlines.

The long-term thesis is stronger than ever, but the short-term picture points to larger swings in both directions.

    Leverage is a wild “drug.””

Mandani is born out of Trump’s style of politics. Trump created the crazy woke left and he has created Mandani now.

Trump doesn’t understand the universal law of reversion to the mean. For every action he pushes hard with, the universe will punch back equally strong with the other side. That’s why populist politics is a losing game for everyone…both sides become unbearable….back and forth to extremes with every election in this populist trap.

    And now this….

A conservative magazine at Harvard University was suspended by its board of directors Sunday amid scrutiny over an article published in September that closely resembled the rhetoric of Adolf Hitler.

In its September print issue, the Harvard Salient published an article by student David F.X. Army that read “Germany belongs to the Germans, France to the French, Britain to the British, America to the Americans,” echoing the words Hitler used in a January 1939 speech to the Reichstag in which he forecasted that another world war would lead to the annihilation of Jews.

The Harvard Salient piece also argued that “Islam et al. has absolutely no place in Western Europe,” and called for a return to values “rooted in blood, soil, language, and love of one’s own.” (The phrase “blood and soil” also echoes a Nazi idea that the inherent features of a people are its land and race.)

In a statement to the school’s newspaper, the Salient’s editor-in-chief, Richard Y. Rodgers, claimed that Army “did not intentionally quote Adolf Hitler, nor did any member of our editorial staff recognize the resemblance prior to publication.”
