Legislation sponsored by Assemblymen John Burzichelli and Paul Moriarty to ensure a level playing field between brick-and-mortar businesses and online marketplace providers like Amazon, and bring in needed revenue to the state has been signed into law.
The new law (A-4496) will require certain remote sellers and online marketplace facilitators to collect and remit sales tax. It was signed today by Gov. Murphy.
“This will help provide parity among brick-and-mortar businesses and online marketplaces and provide the state with needed revenue,” said Burzichelli (D Cumberland/Gloucester/Salem). “Online marketplaces have made it easier for interstate and international commerce, allowing many businesses to circumvent state sales tax requirements. New Jersey based businesses have to abide by the sales and use tax law, and so should any company who does substantial business in the state.”
New Jersey could gain between $216 million and $351 million as a result of this legislation—about 2 to 4 percent of total 2016 state and local government general sales and gross receipts tax revenues— according to the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) study in November 2017.
Forty-five states and the District of Columbia levy taxes on the sale of goods and certain services, including those sold remotely, such as over the Internet.
Under the law, if a seller does not have a physical presence in the state but has revenue from sales into the state in the calendar year, or prior year, in excess of $100,000, the seller must collect taxes. The same rule will apply to a seller with 200 or more separate transactions into the state in a calendar year or in the prior year.

Even after Wayfair, the taxation of online sales is going to be an issue and a problem. NJ can try to collect tax on a seller with no physical presence in NJ but there are still jurisdictional and enforcement issues. The out of state seller can simply ignore NJ’s demands, and even ignore a default judgment issued in a NJ state court. Smaller sellers can simply set up subs and run business through them in order to limit the hit. There are a lot of ways to skin this cat.
Larger sellers are likely already remitting because they have presence in NJ. So the real effect of this law is likely to be minimal. And if the Goodlatte proposal gets any traction, states without sales tax will see a boom in corporate registrations and NJ gets nothing.

I care less about the two party system than I do about career politicians. I’m all for throwing out all incumbents, of every party. I didn’t even think about them getting thrown out in their primaries until Eric Cantor was “Cantored”. I like that as the best course of action. Show the elites that they don’t even have any support within their own party.

I work in this field. The above statement is the biggest crock I’ve heard in my life. AI is hands down the most overhyped technological development in decades. The results from most AI products in the legal field are terrible and do not outperform traditional legal databases. Maybe in 50 years but right now they are terrible.

At my last job, we also nicknamed this guy at work Jimmy “two times” because his name is James and he has to send out a second email correcting the mistake in his first.
It’s actually para legal s that are having the biggest negative effects on attorney employment they do most of the work and in many cases do it better and they are a lot cheaper. Too many went to law school. I saw something in the WSJ a couple of years ago that said if you are not practicing law within 5 years of graduating law school it’s more than likely you will never practice.
Big problem for young attorney’s is the refusal by many clients of firms to pay for their work. They don’t mind paying $900 an hour for an associate with 5 years experience. They have a big problem paying $500 for some kid out of law school. Client’s push the cost, or at least a larger chunk of it, of getting the younger attorneys experience back onto the law firms so law firms then hire fewer new associates.

Do you honestly think a robot is going to do the job of a doctor? There are examples with robot surgeries because of the precision available. But there needs to be a doctor behind it.
They have a machine that dispenses the 150 most popular medications and it’s designed to eliminate pharmacists. My friends brother was the pharmacist in charge of quality control for all the Rite Aids in the state. He said, that the prescription errors skyrocketed. The reason being, if the person loading up the machine screwed up, the machine never knew and just contintued to dispense the wrong medication to everyone. Meanwhile, I would hope that the human would notice 2nd time around….he’s go the wrong medication.
In short, robots made things worse.
Because the AI products don’t work any better than the current products and the current products haven’t done anything to reduce the demand for legal services. The guy’s a clown talking about stuff that he doesn’t even know about.
AI in it’s current capacity isn’t better than our current technology. IBM Watson beat the dude at Jeopardy but it took forever for them to get it to do it and the amount of computer power IBM had to dedicate to doing it is nowhere near financially feasible to make AI work for other purposes.

Btw Pumpkin, I didn’t mean to offend, I am not saying that AI and robotics aren’t our future in the long run. My point is the hype is so outrageous that they are making it sound like things that are likely to happen 50-150 years from now are going to happen in the span of the next 5-10 years. I have to deal with lawyers asking me to look into these AI products they see mentioned in these “advertorials” the start-ups are aggressively getting placed into legal pubs alongside skewed “surveys” the same start-ups conducted. You get the product in and play around with them and see they aren’t any better, and in most cases worse, than the current non-AI products. I meet every couple months with colleagues from other law firms and we for the life of us can’t believe the press these companies are getting when their products are so mediocre.
It’s similar to the study done on SEC filings where if a company throws the word “block-chain” into the filing their stock price goes up.

Hehe I am sure we could! My biggest gripe with lawyers is because they went to law school they are experts on everything! And as for critical thinking and writing?? I am not impressed with many of them. I am talking specifically about the crop that have graduated in the last 10 years or so.

SCOTUS will hear this case (link below) later this fall. Some believe the urgency to seat the current SCOTUS is because he would create a majority vote on this case.
The case is about a pardon carrying over to the state level so the get out of jail card gets one out of federal and state in one shot. You all can decide what the ramifications of this would be.

This is how I’ve been reading it. Roaring 20’s 2.0 and then a severe crash that will be downright scary. The crash will come from lack of demand in the economy as population growth peaks and starts to decline. Combine that with money being concentrated at all times highs and it’s going to be a severe crash.

Do you honestly think a robot is going to do the job of a doctor? There are examples with robot surgeries because of the precision available. But there needs to be a doctor behind it.
They have a machine that dispenses the 150 most popular medications and it’s designed to eliminate pharmacists. My friends brother was the pharmacist in charge of quality control for all the Rit.e Aid.s in the state. He said, that the prescription errors skyrocketed. The reason being, if the person loading up the machine screwed up, the machine never knew and just continued to dispense the wrong medication to everyone. Meanwhile, I would hope that the human would notice 2nd time around….he’s got the wrong medication.
In short, robots made things worse.

Harvesting Berries, I’d like to see that. When I worked on a farm, there were some days that I did 5 straight hours of raspberry picking. But the thing was, it was all done by feel. The packs you get in the supermarket are great and all, but they weren’t peak ripeness. Those don’t transport well. When we picked them properly, we could get $10 a pound for them and sell out every day. There was nothing better.
With blueberries in Maine, they pick them all and then run them through a conveyor belt with an optical sorter that puts them into specific bins based on color. So, they’ve developed a method to group the ripest berries together. Less ripe ones go toward dried products and canned products. The best ones are shipped off or flash frozen.

Consumer spending is the biggest economic driver of growth whether you realize it or not. It’s not rocket science, if you share profits with workers through wage increases, you set in motion for the long term growth of the economy. Their spending matters, and giving them the ability to spend more results in long term growth in the economy. Way better than saving ever could.
Just do the long term math. If everyone just started saving, you will stun the economy. You will lose out on growth through the loss of compounding that you will never get back. If everyone starts spending, you set in motion the need to invest and feed that demand that results in strong long term growth.
I’m not saying savings aren’t needed, but it’s just not needed for the majority of the population to do. You need them to spend, not save. Only people saving should be the one’s making more money than they can consume. Their savings should be used directly to invest in that demand and fuel that growth.
With current issues with income inequality, I’ll sum it up like this. With so much capital being rewarded to profit at the expense of workers raises over the past 20 years, we have created a problem. As so much capital becomes concentrated at the top, it has no where to invest. The money in the economy has concentrated in the savings class at the expense of the spending class. This results in an imbalance in the economy between spending and savings (aka investments). Investments can only be made if there is demand. Too much money at the top kills demand for long term investment and this is why WE SHOULD ALL HATE the extreme CONCENTRATION of capital in a few hands. It hurts the economy!
Now no one, come and tell me how savings is everything in an advanced economy.
