Fed unexpectedly cuts by 50

From CNBC:

Fed slashes interest rates by a half point, an aggressive start to its first easing campaign in four years

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday enacted its first interest rate cut since the early days of the Covid pandemic, slicing half a percentage point off benchmark rates in an effort to head off a slowdown in the labor market.

With both the jobs picture and inflation softening, the central bank’s Federal Open Market Committee chose to lower its key overnight borrowing rate by a half percentage point, or 50 basis points, affirming market expectations that had recently shifted from an outlook for a cut half that size.

Outside of the emergency rate reductions during Covid, the last time the FOMC cut by half a point was in 2008 during the global financial crisis.

The decision lowers the federal funds rate to a range between 4.75%-5%. While the rate sets short-term borrowing costs for banks, it spills over into multiple consumer products such as mortgages, auto loans and credit cards.

In addition to this reduction, the committee indicated through its “dot plot” the equivalent of 50 more basis points of cuts by the end of the year, close to market pricing. The matrix of individual officials’ expectations pointed to another full percentage point in cuts by the end of 2025 and a half point in 2026. In all, the dot plot shows the benchmark rate coming down about 2 percentage points beyond Wednesday’s move.

“The Committee has gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward 2 percent, and judges that the risks to achieving its employment and inflation goals are roughly in balance,” the post-meeting statement said.

The decision to ease came “in light of progress on inflation and the balance of risks.” Notably, the FOMC vote was 11-1, with Governor Michelle Bowman preferring a quarter-point move. Bowman’s dissent was the first by a Fed governor since 2005, though a number of regional presidents have cast “no” votes during the period.

“We’re trying to achieve a situation where we restore price stability without the kind of painful increase in unemployment that has come sometimes with this inflation. That’s what we’re trying to do, and I think you could take today’s action as a sign of our strong commitment to achieve that goal,” Chair Jerome Powell said at a news conference following the decision.

With both the jobs picture and inflation softening….

A few things: Inflation softening is just another way of saying you’ve stopped being stabbed repeatedly and are now left to bleed out. Jobs softening means all the Covid bounce-back jobs are beginning to get trimmed as people are debt-maxed and can’t “afford” goods and services any longer. Ergo, the FED did an ‘uh-oh’, chopped by 50 basis points because they realized there’s a cliff up ahead. It also proves that the current administration accomplished absolutely nothing positive to enhance the health and growth of the country.

If you’ve been on this board long enough, most of us have been criticizing the loose monetary policy from 2010 onwards regardless of who is on office. Some of us even criticized it prior to 2008.

The case for rate cuts right now was pretty weak but the fed has been almost exclusively inflationary for 45 years now. At some points, more than others, but it’s a one way street.

    Gary,

The inflation was caused almost wholly due to the Covid payments. Who started that?

  15. Libturd says:

And again. Biden did it without ZIRP in place.

  16. Fast Eddie says:

    Who started that?

Who extended it? Who kept printing? Who wanted to inject an additional $3 Trillion Dollar spending package? And since fuel costs drive everything else, why didn’t joe insist on doubling down and extending Trump’s energy independence initiative? Why did he deplete the reserves instead? Why did the Inflation Abduction Act do jack shit?

  17. Libturd says:

To blame the inflation solely on Biden displays your lack of economic education. If anything, Biden should be credited for keeping inflation from running away and getting it back to normal. FYI, prices don’t return to what they were before, but the speed in which prices increase over time return to what they were before inflation. But like blaming Latinos for taking black jobs or LEGAL Haitian immigrants for eating pets, or Venezuelan Gangs for taking over public housing (when they haven’t hurt a single person), you are making the mistake of taking the most lying POTUS in the history of POTUSes at his word. I suggest you dig a little deeper. And the SALT punishment on the blue states? Explain the flip flop. Or is he just buying votes like every other corrupt politician does.

Eh not really he had an entire year or so of ZIRP, it was ZIRP for about his first 14 months as president, and it did not get above 2% until Sept of 2022….Low rates for most of his presidency. Only ratched up in the last year and now we are taking the brakes off the train…..

  21. BRT says:

To blame the inflation solely on Biden displays your lack of economic education. If anything, Biden should be credited for keeping inflation from running away and getting it back to normal.

Can’t have it both ways. And it’s not back to normal. And even getting it to 2% doesn’t alleviate all the damage done. The fed controls inflation/money supply. The federal government spends money. Fine whatever, IMO they spend about 10x too much but we can’t do anything about it. What Biden could have done is insist on opening up instead of trying to drag out the free money pipeline to allow people to sit around all day and collect money for nothing. You want more production, stop paying people to be at home. You won’t lower prices, stop printing money to keep people at home. That would have alleviated the pain.

That being said….stupid policies like cancelling pipelines, red tape, overregulation, slaughtering livestock to “contain disease”…all contribute to supply deficits and the natural economic result is higher prices. And for god sakes, they need to stop subsidizing corn. It’s gotten to the point that every single product has high fructose corn syrup and canola oil. We are poisoning society. Northwestern University data scientist Thomas Miller said that Harris will knock Trump in a landslide election, telling Fortune Magazine: ‘It’s gone from a drastic landslide in Trump’s direction to a drastic landslide for Harris’.

Miller first gained attention after he accurately predicted the 2020 presidential election by unconventionally using betting markets rather than traditional polls to forecast the outcome.

He achieved this by developing a model, which is based on 16 presidential elections, that converted betting prices into the popular vote and Electoral College projections.

  39. BRT says:

You mean the infrastructure bill? Perhaps. But I’ve made this argument before. I’ll take improved infrastructure, like the new Hudson Tunnels, over a huge corporate tax rate cut

You don’t actually get it. 43 billion for new internet access, you got zero out of that investment. 8 billion for new charging stations, we got THREE charging stations. 43. Juice Box says:

re: “43 billion for new internet access you got zero out of that investment.”

That was another project run by VP Harris our next President. President Biden appointed her the “Broadband Czar” during his 2021 State of the Union address, President Joe Biden tapped Vice President Harris to lead the effort “because I know it will get done.”

Broadband, Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program.

Recent testimony about her handy work here from June of 2024.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commission Brendan Carr noted in June that Biden and Harris did not connect one American despite having access to $42.5 billion in funding from the so-called infrastructure bill, or the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Carr noted on Wednesday, “President Biden put VP Harris in charge of this effort back in 2021 and days later not 1 person has been connected.”

He added, “Hundreds of broadband infrastructure builders are now sounding the alarm, writing that the $42 billion plan to expand Internet has been wired to fail.”

  50. 3b says:

Juice: It has taken over 2 years for an overpass bridge to be completed at the Jones Rd exit, on Rt4 in Englewood. As for the tunnel, 2035 sounds ambitious, probably closer to 2040 or longer. And anyhow, I don’t see thousands of people commuting into NYC for jobs 10 years or more out.

  51. Juice Box says:

BTW Gwynne Shotwell the CEO of Starlink said last month that Starlink meets the speed and latency requirements of Rural Broadband program. 67. Libturd says:

These are all silly arguments as long as PACs and sPACs continue to exist. Why is our healthcare expensive? The pharma and health care insurance lobby are incredibly powerful. Why do projects take forever and cost infinitely more here than anywhere else in the world? Because those who get the contracts are never the best or cheapest. They are the ones who contributed the most to our political leaders. Then there are the kickbacks, free vacations, sweetheartt deals, etc. Every where you look, the problem with our government is that it is bought and paid for at every level. Unions don’t exist anymore to protect workers. They exist to profit off of them and to purchase votes. You can nitpick back and forth about this project and that project, but at the end of the day, our government is broken and it’s a bi-partisan effort.

The Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Providers, or ABRINT, explained later in the day that in its update X had changed its structure to use IP addresses associated with Cloudflare, a cyber security company in San Francisco. The internet-infrastructure provider works with millions of websites, helping many to route their traffic.

The structural changes in X “make blocking the app much more complicated,” ABRINT said in a statement. The group said that under X’s previous system, the platform used specific IP addresses, which can allow internet companies to identify where data is coming from.

Many of the IP addresses currently being used by X “are shared with other legitimate services, such as banks and large internet platforms, making it impossible to block an IP without affecting other services,” ABRINT added.

I drove it for a week. Didn’t have the experience you described.

Not for the handle, not for the charging.

I was probably in a good place for chargers, and I don’t open a car door like an angry gorilla.

I can tell you that I have replaced at least 4 door handles on the Camrys that I have owned over the years, the worst ones are the 1997-2001 handles. They practically fall off no matter how careful you are. Learned instead to take a piece of PVC corner protecting moulding, cut it to the appropriate size, and glue it to the backside of the handle. It’s the only permanent fix for that.

Superchargers were fun. Met people there. Women don’t mind using them, no odor, no smell. Charge from 25-100 less than 30 minutes. Most of the time topped off 50-85 in less than ten minutes. Car found the chargers by itself.

Not the perfect car, but a good car especially for women who don’t believe in maintenance. You can’t let it run out of oil or antifreeze if it doesn’t have any. HEHE.

They are still in the S curve of growth with their EVs… if they get FSD right it will be the end of the Uber and others. Elon is closer than perhaps any other player on making it happen as long as we keep China out.

China made EV and Hybrid sales are about 50% of new car sales in China now…They have the state backing them of couse and endless cheap manpower while Elon is relying on Robots and innovation like the Gigapress and his new Tesla Bots to make the cars and batteries. Most of it done here in the good ole USA….

Some other countries are at 90% of all new car sales are EV.. Norway is the example there. US growth for EVs is slower 7.6% now the overall national market, but it is still is expected to increase to between 30% and 39% of all new car sales in the next six years. That is allot of growth, I don’t see the other big automakers taking away their market share anytime soon.

“Gator just said that Trump just said that if he loses, it would be the fault of Jews.”

You need to stop blaming others when you decide to spread lies and/or misinformation. What he actually said was that low support/turnout among Jews could “have a lot to do with a loss.” And of course, like the MSDNC talking heads and other Dem shills like yourself, you left out anything that didn’t fit the narrative, like when he said ““If I do win, Israel will be safe and secure, and we will stop the toxic poison of antisemitism from spreading all over America and all over the world, and we’ll get it stopped.”

Kamala Harris Says Anyone Who Breaks Into Her House Is ‘Getting Shot’

Vice President Kamala Harris defended her gun ownership and said she would use a firearm to protect her home in a conversation with Oprah Winfrey on Thursday night.

Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, appeared at an event called Unite for America in Michigan, where she spoke with Winfrey about a slate of policy issues, including immigration, access to reproductive health care and her support for commonsense gun reform. During a candid moment, Winfrey asked Harris about her remarks during the debate last week against Donald Trump when she confirmed she is a gun owner.

“I’m a gun owner; Tim Walz is a gun owner,” Harris said.

“I did not know that,” Winfrey replied.

“If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” Harris added. “Probably should not have said that. But my staff will deal with that later.”

  128. 3b says:

Harris gave an unscripted interview this past Tuesday in Philadelphia. In her unscripted 11 minute interview Harris was asked by the reporter for one or two specific things she had in mind to get prices down. Her response to the question is below (WSJ).

Ms . Harris: “Well, I’ll start with this: I grew up a middle-class kid. My mother raised my sister and me. She worked very hard. She was able to finally save up enough money to buy our first house when I was a teenager. I grew up in a community of hardworking people, you know, construction workers and nurses and teachers.

And I try to explain to some people who may not have had the same experience, you know, if—but a lot of people will relate to this. You know, I grew up in a neighborhood of folks who were very proud of their lawn, you know? And I was raised to believe and to know that all people deserve dignity, and that we as Americans have a beautiful character, you know, we have ambitions and aspirations and dreams.

But not everyone necessarily has access to the resources that can help them fuel those dreams and ambitions. So when I talk about building an opportunity economy, it is very much with the mind of investing in the ambitions and aspirations and the incredible work ethic of the American people . . .”

Also from the interview: “Focusing on, again, the aspirations and the dreams but also just recognizing that at this moment in time, some of the stuff we could take for granted years ago, we can’t take for granted anymore.” “

And so my approach is about new ideas, new policies that are directed at the current moment, and also to be very honest with you, my focus is very much on what we need to do over the next ten, twenty years. To catch up to the 21st century around again capacity but also challenges.

Yes, she did a fantastic job at the debate, and she will make an excellent President, she has a plan as one can plainly see from her above comments.

  129. LAX says:

She’ll be okay because she’s the polar opposite of Trump who made a lousy President.

  130. Libturd says:

    Have them interview Pelosi.

  131. LAX says:

As President Donald Trump prepares to leave the White House, 47 percent of Americans say he will be remembered as one of the worst presidents in American history, according to the latest PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll.

By comparison, Marist data from December 2016 shows 17 percent of Americans said President Barack Obama had been among the worst chief executives. Four years later, 83 percent of Democrats, 43 percent of independents and 13 percent of Republicans felt Trump had earned that title. And more than half of Americans — 57 percent — disapprove of the job he has done in office.

  132. BRT says:

Lib, that’s not a quote. It’s spliced. Did you actually watch the video? I’m not gonna try to argue that he doesn’t speak in hyperbole and hysterics but I at least watched the raw video.

  133. LAX says:

    Cont’d

Sixteen percent of Americans overall, including a third of Republicans, think Trump has been one of the country’s best presidents, and roughly a third of Americans — 38 percent — approve of his performance over his tenure.

At Trump’s inauguration in January 2017, he described a United States that he said was besieged with “crime and gangs and drugs” and littered with “rusted-out factories,” while vowing to put an end to “American carnage” and put the nation “first.” Now, as the country prepares to usher in President-elect Joe Biden’s presidency, the Capitol is being guarded by more than 20,000 National Guard troops after a deadly attack by Trump’s supporters, the U.S. has lost roughly 400,000 lives to the coronavirus, due in part to a haphazard pandemic response, and the country’s economy has been battered in the fallout. Presidential historian Jeffrey Engel said history will “remember Trump as a person who focused primarily on himself and left carnage in his wake.”

Before hitting this final lowpoint, the president’s approval/disapproval numbers have been remarkably steadfast over the last four years, according to Marist polling data. Shortly after Trump’s inauguration, 39 percent of Americans said they approved of the new president’s job so far in office, while another 11 percent said they weren’t sure. Half of the country disapproved of Trump. Today, that disapproval has only grown, and the number of Americans who are unsure has dwindled to 5 percent.

The data reflect how Trump has carved sharp divisions between Americans. In December 2016, 53 percent of Americans said that Trump would do more to divide the country than to unite it. In the latest poll, respondents were far more optimistic about Biden’s outreach, with 55 percent saying the former vice president and senator would do more for unity.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand the pathology behind liberal Jews willingness to be victimized — they literally need to have their heads examined. T was Israel’s best friend and staunchest supporter, delivered the Abraham Accords, and even has a Jewish son-in-law. Yet in the mixed-up mind’s of liberal Jews, he’s an Anti-semite, and the party that’s worthy of support is the one that contains actual Anti-semites like Rashida and Ilhan. Dumb!

  165. Libturd says:

    BRT,

Five times? You must love getting sick. My family of five had one case. Me. And I’m convinced my brother gave it to me. I have another friend who had it five times. He too never took the vaccine. Which is crazy, cause one of mutual best friends died from it. He had a treatable cancer, but the hospital was overwhelmed with Covid patients and that killed him. Young friend too. Mid 40s. But I don’t want to get into the whole vaccine thing again.

I give RFK credit for being pretty moderate on a lot of positions and often they align with mine. But he has too many far out positions for me to take him seriously. And the whale thing? With the kids in the car? Not sure he’s presidential quality at this point. Oh, didn’t he believe in the stolen election theory too? No wonder Harris didn’t want him anwhere near him. Just too many conspiracies to be taken seriously. So many, I forgot most of them. Aliens too if I recall correctly and stange Covid beliefs.

Yeah, it’s tough to fathom unless you’ve lived it yourself.

My mother’s side of the family came over in 1939 — my grandfather was a tall red headed, blue eyed man from Prussia with a degree in Economics from the Univ of Munich. He was kind and dynamic and was welcomed into his new community in the midwest. He started a small business with $500 that he scraped together, put two kids through college — one through what was a new MBA program at Wharton in the mid fifties.

Before they left Prussia they had their family business taken from them. Lentils make great food for troops on the go. The Nazi commandant moved into their house, a three story home with a tennis court. Their parents were shipped by train to a camp and took pills on the way there so they never made it “there”.

Israel doesn’t exist to be a political football for opportunists like Trump to manipulate for political gain. It is a Jewish homeland intended to provide safe harbor for a people who have been slaughtered throughout history. Israel doesn’t need “friends” like Donald Trump.

  168. LAX says:

Israel also doesn’t care about the far left wing of an American political party. They know it’s just noise and they ignore it. The real friends of Israel are the World’s wealthy and powerful Jews who genuinely love and support the Homeland.

Make no mistake, if you are a Jew, you understand. You absolutely understand.

If those In power Didn’t abuse it so much I might be inclined to look the other way, but that’s not the case. They just beat up a guy who was working at a homeless shelter for doing his job. So no, I don’t trust them to do the right thing

Isn’t this your homeland? Maybe that’s part of the problem.

  172. Phoenix says:

As somebody living in America, isn’t your allegiance to America? are you a patriot? Would you be willing to fight for America in a war? Would you be willing to send your children to fight for A war for America?

  173. LAX says:

2:04 It’s my home, But as a Jew I have instant Citizenship when I set foot in Israel should I need it. That is why it is a safe harbor.

  174. Phoenix says:

seems like Microsoft wants to reopen 3 mile Island. I guess we need nuclear power In order to run all these AI computer computers.

  175. LAX says:

2:06 I was in the ROTC in grad school and they really liked me and I liked them, but the thought of spending July marching around Georgia in combat boots just wasn’t that appealing. I would have done it but my MBA uncle advised me against it. I listened and spent those hot summer months in an air conditioning office and going to happy hour. I was very very close to enlisting out of high school and took the ASVAB. Every morning began with a call from some branch of the armed forces, so, yes, I would enlist and fight.

  176. LAX says:

Am I a patriot? That is a term that really gets abused a lot these days unfortunately.
I love America as it is the only home I have ever had. I have had a great life here. The flag, flyovers and American past times make me happy. But I have not suffered for the USA like John McCain did. The moment Trump maligned McCain I knew Trump was garbage.

  177. Phoenix says:

i’ve never been to Israel, but I have been to California. After years of reading of what goes on in the world, I think I’d feel safer in California.

can’t remember the last time anybody shot rockets into California. I guess my definition of safe Harbour is different than yours

  178. LAX says:

Would I send my child to fight in a war for America? Not until the American military gets it’s horrible treatment of women in the armed forces under control.

  179. BRT says:

He too never took the vaccine.

I had my 2 shots, and was one of the first on the board to get them.

  180. LAX says:

2:12 You gotta remember Israel has taken in Jews from Russia and other really scary places for decades. It’s been nice to be in CA through all of the divisive political nonsense that has played out here and I think CA does it’s own thing regardless of what the rest of the Country does, it’s just really expensive out here and if you should need an affordable living arrangement you’ll find your self right back in Trump-land….a ka the Inland Empire. Jews will always be safe in Israel as long as the weaponry works and as long as they can mitigate the risks of Bus bombing terrorists.

  181. LAX says:

Life is America is precipitated by money….in Israel you have collective Kibbutz life where you can live and work in a relatively egalitarian environment. I find that to be an interesting option.

  182. Phoenix says:

patriot is relatively simple. It’s also that honor trust you know those kind of things who you actually have your allegiance to.

  183. LAX says:

No it’s not simple at all. It is a term that some of the most unpatriotic people in our history through around without any real understanding of what it means. It is not about rooting for the Country to fail so one party or another can “win”, it’s not about hugging the flag in some eerie display, it’s not about praising racist torch carrying losers.

  184. Libturd says:

I have tons of pried in our country. But absolutely hatred of much of our selfish wealthy residents and political whores who bow to them. So yes, I guess I’m a patriot.

  185. Libturd says:

pride. Wonder if that was Freudian?

  186. Fast Eddie says:

    Lib,

I was just typing that…. the Freudian thing. lol.

  187. LAX says:

Patriotism is about all Americans. The older ones and the newly minted. It is about embracing our values and finding love for one another through a common belief that the rules apply to everyone. It is not about lifting up one group over another, but lifting all groups for the greater good. It’s a feeling of pride when you see the flag, not turning it upside down when something happens in politics that you don’t agree with. It’s about service to your fellow men and women whether that is in a classroom, an operating room, or a battle field.

  188. LAX says:

I like being American, I do not like American politics. I find it divisive and simplistic. Too many completely uniformed people vote against their interests and too much corruption that squanders tax money that we all work hard for.

  189. SmallGovConservative says:

Will catch up on the barrage of what I’m sure are nonsensical and utterly forgettable posts from Lib and LACKS later, but in the meantime, a tip as to one of the best long-term investment plays around — veterinary health. Just dropped $175 on our pet’s semi-annual wellness visit. Not bad you say, well our pet is a guinea pig — and the ~350/yr on wellness doesn’t include visits for nail trimming and health food. There’s seemingly no limit to what people will spend on their pets; looks to be a major area of investment for the pharmas.

  191. BRT says:

BRT, you take what Harris said so literally

We have a new Pumps btw, trying to put words in people’s mouths. For the record, I did not criticize what she said. I actually agree with a homeowners right to shoot someone who illegal breaks into their home. I simply pointed out that many states might frown upon that action or even prosecute you for doing so.

But speaking of literally, that’s kinda my point. You guys want to interpret spliced sentence fragments. Anyone who’s ever quoted anyone in an essay would know you should at the very least include the end of a sentence in a quote. But like I said, I prefer to watch a raw unedited video in every single case because the media and people in general can’t be trusted to portray anything without their obscene bias.

  192. Juice Box says:

    lol, – Elon

Ramzan Kadyrov warlord raged against Elon Musk after claiming the Tesla CEO shut down his Cybertruck. The Putin ally accused Musk of “behaving badly” and not being “manly” after the EV got bricked.

  193. 3b says:

Lib: Isn’t Harris s comments in the interview the other day in Philadelphia the other day as I noted above crap? Or is her crap less smelly? Her response was insulting, and crap just like Trump’s. The old Lib would have criticized her response and called it a bunch of nonsense which it is.

  194. 3b says:

It’s much easier to accuse Trump of antisemitism than the college kids protesting, they are just innocent and idealistic, and don’t really know what they are protesting about. I guess that’s the same with the Professors who are protesting too.

Don’t know about others here, but I set a bit of a higher bar for presidential candidates than I do for college students/professors.

  197. SomeOne says:

BRT, how can you not teach imagination when teaching creative problem solving? There are enough thought experiments that kids can to do to check whether the answer they got makes sense. Newton had to use imagination to come up with “laws”, and much of Physics deals with imaginary numbers.

  198. 3b says:

Oc1: Nice deflection on your part. Not surprising of course.

  199. Phoenix says:

    Chi,
    that’s funny. Hehe.

    BRT
“I simply pointed out that many states might frown upon that action or even prosecute you for doing so.”

Warren vs District of Columbia, the police have no duty to protect.
But they just might convict you if you try to defend yourself…..

  200. OC1 says:

3b- I oppose all forms of racism and bigotry, no matter who does it.

I wouldn’t vote for any of those anti-semitic students and professors either.

    But they’re not running.

  201. LAX says:

The colleges purged bad leaders who allowed protesters to run amouk and create a poor environment for other students.

  202. LAX says:

I’ll bet BRT is a great teacher. Physics is a trip and to be creative might be one approach but another would be the hammer the fundamentals. These are really strange times to teach. Anyone who does it, with a very few exceptions, is aces in my book.
