NJ ponzi scheme lawyer steals $1m

From NJ.com:

Disbarred N.J. lawyer admits stealing more than $1M from clients

A former New Jersey real estate attorney admitted on Tuesday to stealing $1.18 million from clients, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Steven Salami, 49, of Hazlet, pleaded guilty to second-degree financial facilitation of criminal activity before Superior Court Judge Christie Bevacqua, authorities said.

Salami, who was based in Hazlet in Monmouth County, took money from his clients for “various real estate transactions” and never did the work he was expected to do, authorities stated in a news release.

The funds, which he was supposed to hold in escrow for the deals, were never returned to his victims, resulting in missed closing dates and nullified real estate transactions, the prosecutor’s office said.

An investigation uncovered dozens of victims, leading to a 63-count indictment against Salami being returned by a Monmouth County Grand Jury in July 2021.

During grand jury testimony, a Monmouth County detective presented evidence that Salami was using newer clients’ trust money to satisfy existing clients deals, essentially running a Ponzi scheme with his law practice.

“Trumpism is a cancerous phenomenon,” he writes. “Treated with surgery once, it now threatens to come back in a more aggressive form, subject neither to the radiation of ‘guardrails’ nor to the chemo of ‘constraints.’ It may well rage out of control and kill its host.”

If elected, Gopnik argues, Trump will pardon and celebrate the January 6th insurrectionists, allowing the existence of a paramilitary organization capable of committing consequence-free violence on his behalf. He will attempt to persecute his political rivals. He will abandon Ukraine, NATO, and the democratic alliance of Europe. And these are just a few of the fearsome outcomes we can predict, based on his malignant acts as President and his blustering, vengeful claims for the future. “An oncologist who, in the face of this much evidence, shrugged and proposed watchful waiting as the best therapy would not be an optimist,” Gopnik writes. “He would be guilty of gross malpractice.”

    Gobnik argues:

Right-wing political power has, over the past half century, turned out to have almost no ability to stave off progressive social change: Nixon took the White House in a landslide while Norman Lear took the airwaves in a ratings sweep. And so a kind of permanent paralysis has set in. The right has kept electing politicians who’ve said, “Enough! No more ‘Anything goes’!”—and anything has kept going.
No matter how many right-wing politicians came to power, no matter how many right-wing judges were appointed, conservatives decided that the entire culture was rigged against them.

  13. Fast Eddie says:

That Cumella video at the Al Smith dinner was awkward. Hey sweetie, you can’t avoid everything and everybody and expect to be the leader. You need to be able to take massive shots repeatedly, and not just the ones… oh, never mind.

A quick search tells me it has a 50 to 100 year lifespan. That house is probably 50 plus years old so, depending on inspection, you either have another 50 years or due for a roof soon. When I bought my current house, I did a new roof as it was at the end. Though, traditional asphalt tiles here, no clay or slate. I assume a slate roof is even higher in price? Gotta search that one.

  15. Grim says:

In NJ? They are going to be similar. In markets where tile is common, slate is for sure more expensive.

  16. Grim says:

Slate roof prices are highly correlated with your wife’s ring size and the cars in the driveway. Did you say you own a boat? Forgot about the $10k slate handling fee.

    DJIA
    -0.25%
strong year-to-date return translates to a 72% probability that the Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, will win the presidential election in November.

Just two months ago the Dow was assigning a 64% probability to a Harris victory (as I wrote at the time). And when I devoted a column in May to this subject, the probability of a Democratic victory was judged to be 58%. The increases in probabilities since then are due to the stock market’s strength; there’s a statistically significant correlation between the Dow’s election-year performance and the incumbent political party’s chances of retaining the White House.

A 72% probability of a Democratic victory is much higher than the 43% chance that the electronic futures markets currently place (according to the aggregator site Election Betting Odds).

  23. Libturd says:

From SOFI’s daily email… (Again, proving that MAGA’s so called economic collapse is complete BS)

Americans continue to spend their hard-earned dollars – irrespective of high prices all around them. And that’s good news for the U.S. economy.

U.S. retail sales increased by 0.4% in September, according to the Census Bureau. This may sound like a tiny change, but in the world of retail sales data, it was meaningful, not to mention a significant increase from the 0.1% August increase.

    Confident Consumers
This is great news for the U.S. economy, which is driven by consumer spending. The Federal Reserve’s high interest rate policy, instituted to combat inflation, was feared to put a real damper on spending and thus economic growth. But this didn’t quite materialize.

And now that the Fed has started to cut rates (the first rate cut happened last month), spending only seems to be accelerating. In September most categories registered gains, including specialty stores, apparel retailers, and restaurants. Notably, the overall figure was weighed down by a decline in gas station sales. Excluding this more volatile category, overall sales grew by 0.6%.

    Ups and Downs
The positive data is particularly reassuring, considering not all data points from this week were as promising. U.S. industrial production dropped 0.3% in September, according to Fed data. The decline is attributed in part to extenuating circumstances including the damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton, as well as the ongoing Boeing strike.

Economic data is often a mixed bag, but in this case, the underlying message is positive. With more Fed rate cuts expected in coming months, this momentum could carry the U.S. economy through the holiday spending cycle.

    Chicago,

I saw an article that read that this significant recent increase in the betting on Trump without any sign of improvement in recent polls, is due to a few large money bettors putting in canceleable bets on Trump to move the line (some even rumored it’s Musk). Not only has this moved the betting line but it may also be responsible for the recent run in DJT stock absent any significant change in company fundamentals. There was no source listed, so my bullshit meter is high on this. Though, I would not be surprised if it was true. There is, apparently, little to be done, nor even any familiar language of protest to draw on. There are really only three tank type water heater manufacturers left in the country. AO, Rheem and Bradford White. They all work just fine.

If it’s PSEG is it electric? If it’s over 50 gallons of storage it has to be a heat pump type, which has some issues. Or they can play around with the wiring on a “commercial” light duty heater and make it work in a residential application.

Unless its a heat pump type electric its all pretty mature tech.

Donald Trump has long claimed no one has ever been more physically and mentally equipped to be president than him. In one example from just a few days ago, he wrote that Kamala Harris needs to “pass a test on Cognitive Stamina and Agility” because her “actions have led many to believe that there could be something very wrong with her.”

It’s Trump, however, whose public appearances have been increasingly incoherent as the race has intensified in the home stretch before Election Day. The former president has also canceled several interviews and public appearances, including a CNBC interview, an NBC interview in Philadelphia, a speaking slot at an NRA event in Georgia, and, most notably, a high-profile interview with 60 Minutes. Trump has also refused to debate Harris a second time after getting clobbered by the vice president in September.

But the surge might be a mirage manufactured by a group of four Polymarket accounts that have collectively pumped about $30 million of crypto into bets that Trump will win.

“There’s strong reason to believe they are the same entity,” said Miguel Morel, chief executive of Arkham Intelligence, a blockchain analysis firm that examined the accounts.

The accounts betting big on Trump—Fredi9999, Theo4, PrincessCaro and Michie—were all funded by deposits from Kraken, a U.S.-based crypto exchange, according to Arkham. They behave in a similar fashion, systematically placing frequent bets on Trump and stepping up the size of their bets at the same time, Arkham found. The oldest of the accounts was created in June, while the newest was created this month.

Even many die-hard Trump fans consider it unlikely that he will win the majority of votes cast. Trump lost the popular vote in 2016 and 2020, winning the presidency in 2016 by capturing enough swing states to triumph in the Electoral College.

The betting spree has echoes of the “Romney Whale,” an unknown trader who placed a flurry of bets on a Mitt Romney victory during the closing weeks of the 2012 election, using Intrade, a now-defunct prediction market. The trader lost nearly $7 million, according to a 2015 paper by a pair of economists from Microsoft and Barnard College. The authors concluded that the bets had characteristics of manipulation, potentially aimed at shaping public perceptions.

60 year olds are fighting for Ukraine, North Korean slaves for Russia. Your world leaders act like they are playing a boardgame with sacrificial pawns. Doesn’t matter to them as long as we get Locked and Raytheon go up.

More cages in the kennel. Woof woof.

Town officials in Wayne Township this week passed an ordinance to rezone the property for residential use. That clears the way for the developer who purchased it from Toys “R” Us in 2019 to redevelop a substantial chunk of the 191 acres of land into 1,360 apartments, more than 200 of which will be affordably priced for low- and middle-income people. The town has a duty to develop about 500 affordable homes under a state mandate, but Wayne officials have waged a protracted battle with the state over how to fulfill this obligation.

Just saw those puppies off. 20 minutes of work at best.

Looking for a score, is “Axis of evil” worse than “epitome of evil?”

Terrifying new research has laid bare how notorious Venezuelan super gang Tren de Aragua’s criminal tentacles have spread across America.

Dubbed the ‘epitome of evil’ and ‘MS-13 on steroids’, police investigations showed that the mob is behind a spiraling crime wave across the US, with members accused of murders, violent assaults on cops and sex trafficking women.

WTF with all the food stores? The place is belching out high calorie sugar, salt and crap from every corner of the place. The smell of food wafts from the moment you step inside. Small pocket storefronts have replaced retail with food.

Sickening. Inexplicable. I am so detached from mainstream society. I must be some kind of deviant.
