From NJBIA:
NJ January Jobless Rate Stays Flat at 4.6%
New Jersey private-sector employers added 5,900 jobs during January, but significant losses in the public sector were primarily responsible for an overall drop in total employment to 4,387,700, according to federal data released Thursday by state officials.
Meanwhile, New Jersey’s unemployment rate held steady in January at a seasonally adjusted 4.6% where it has stood for the past eight months. The national unemployment rate in January was 4% and rose to 4.1% in February.
For January, six out of nine major private sectors recorded month-over-month job growth including professional and business services (+3,800); private education and health services (+1,300); financial activities (+600); manufacturing (+600); trade, transportation, and utilities (+200); and other services (+200).
The public sector recorded a loss of 12,000 jobs in January, mainly at the state level (-10,300). Sectors that also recorded losses include information (-500) and leisure and hospitality (-300). Construction recorded no change for the month.
Overall, the preliminary nonfarm employment estimates for January showed a decrease of 6,100 jobs to a seasonally adjusted level of 4,387,700. Although that represents a decline from December, total employment is still up by 36,200 jobs compared to January 2024.
New Jersey’s labor force participation rate was 64% in January, which is below the revised December rate of 64.1% and the post-pandemic peak of 65.0% in June 2023. The labor force participation rate calculates the percentage of the working-age population that is employed or actively seeking work.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ benchmark process, a required annual review and adjustment of previously released employment data at the state levels, shows that year-over year change (December 2023 – December 2024) in total nonfarm jobs was 0.9% (39,800 jobs) higher than the previously reported gain of 0.7% (30,300 jobs). The two-year gain from December 2022 to December 2024, however, was revised downward to 104,000 or 15,900 few jobs than previously reported.
The annual benchmarking process also revised the estimated employment losses caused by the pandemic. The revisions showed that in March and April of 2020, New Jersey lost a total of 723,700 nonfarm jobs or 17.1% of the state total nonfarm employment in February 2020. Revised estimates still indicate that New Jersey returned to its pre-pandemic employment level in April 2022.

Census shows NJ population hit 9.5 million, with only one county reporting a decline
New U.S. Census Bureau estimates show where New Jersey’s population grew the most in 2024 and which county was the only one to shrink.
Released Thursday, the data shows that Essex, Hudson and Union counties recorded the largest percentage increases last year, while Bergen and Middlesex counties joined them in seeing numerical gains of more than 10,000 residents.
Census officials earlier this year said New Jersey’s estimated population topped 9.5 million in 2024, amounting to a 1.3% year-over-year increase. The growth — driven largely by international migration — was the highest in the Northeast and part of a broader trend of rising populations in major metro areas across the country, according to bureau officials.
Union County, from July 1, 2023 to July 1, 2024, posted the fastest percentage growth at 2.08%, adding 12,080 residents to reach 594,160 people. Hudson County followed with a 2.06% increase, growing by 14,865 people. Essex County ranked third in percentage growth at 2%, bringing its population to 881,527 — second highest behind Bergen County.
Other counties with notable increases included Bergen (1.26%), Middlesex (1.60%), Mercer (1.51%), Somerset (1.53%), Cumberland (1.53%) and Passaic (1.23%). Gloucester, Morris, Burlington and Ocean also grew by more than 0.9%.
Cape May County was the only New Jersey county to experience a decline, losing 768 residents. The 0.81% decrease brought its relatively low population to 93,875.

Only time will tell if this trend sticks or sticks out.
It is a sad, boring trend.
My porch light chandelier needed some fixing ‘cuz the birds made their way in. It took me a few years to do anything with it cuz I didn’t want to get rid of the nests.. but this was a good time, so took it down.
It’s made if solid heavy metal from the late 70s. I was looking for a replacement and there’s nothing like it now. And even if the design was close, the new ones are all hollow light material.
I’ll just refurbish it and put it back. It will live longer than me.
Compact of free association between the U.S. and Greenland possible now? Similar to the Marshall Islands?
Seems possible after Greenlands elections.
Since today is healthcare watch day (for me atleast), came across this post from a doctor:
The Most Important Number in Healthcare: Provider Tax ID Number… the ‘TIN.’ Buy Why?? Hint: It involves Doctors, Private Equity, Insurance Carriers and Lawsuits.
Each physician’s practice, hospital system, etc. has their own TIN. It is like the ‘license plate’ for the organization.
The TIN is listed on the claim sent to the insurance company. The insurance company then correlates the TIN with the appropriate contract for that practice, which then dictates reimbursement.
Private Equity firms and physician practices strategically use the TIN to increase reimbursement by ‘rolling up’ multiple physician practices into one company and then billing all the claims for all the practices with the TIN for the one practice that has the highest reimbursement rate.
Aetna has sued physician group Radiology Partners for allegedly using this approach in Florida.
Also, UHC has sued Radiology Partners for allegedly using this approach in Texas.
Whether or not the ‘Roll Up’ of physician practices under one high-paying TIN is a ‘scam’ or ‘fair’ is not the real issue.
The real issue is that these prices are hidden from the ultimate payer of the claims… Patients and Employers. Make the prices transparent and let the market decide.

I agree that a lot of products from the 1970s were better. I‘m currently painting the two bedrooms of the neighbor‘s house that we bought. In the 1970s it was popular in Germany to have a wooden ceiling and wood on some walls. Kind of like wooden planks with a gap in between. They originally were put up in their natural wood, and in later years painted usually in an off white color. The crappy and expensive paint they sell now makes it difficult to apply in an even coat.

Electric cars already depreciate faster than their ICE counterparts. Worst investment someone can make is to buy one. Just buy it if you like it and enjoy it.
Vehicles of all types will likely get cheaper in the near term anyway. With this announcement, thinks like DEF systems in Diesels or expensive cylinder deactivation or stop/start technologies will no longer be required.

An emphatic yes on Cali. I was walking around my house yesterday looking at the stucco and windows and no sign of peeling or flaking from the paint job they did two years ago. The window repairs look perfect too.

A key question for today:
How are U.S. consumers holding up?
The University of Michigan’s index suggested consumer confidence sank further this month, reflecting increasing unease over President Trump’s tariff policy and its potential to drive inflation higher.
Many consumers cited the high level of uncertainty around policy and other economic factors, said Joanne Hsu, director of the survey.
“Frequent gyrations in economic policies make it very difficult for consumers to plan for the future, regardless of one’s policy preferences,” Hsu added.
Lib, thanks!

Everybody else pays these tolls as well. And the same amount, no matter if you are rich or poor.
So based on percentages of income, someone who makes less spends way more of their income on tolls than someone who has less income.
“New Jersey does not require safety inspections for electric vehicles, including Teslas.”
The reason is that they were smog checks, not safety inspections.
What’s the point of determining that both headlamps are in working condition when the operator is too brain dead to notice they’re not on after sunset?
“Sounds like you can afford to pay your fair share of road tax. I f’n pay mine, pay yours cheapskate.”
So an onerous tax or toll levy exacted by a private entity is fine so long as it can be comfortably borne by those on the lowest rungs of the socioeconomic ladder?

There’s a lot at Quakerbridge Mall on the Hamilton/Lawrence border. It’s filled with like 1000 Teslas. The dealership is across the street. Might make sense to patrol that with private security at this point.

Trump to Deliver Speech to Justice Dept.
The president, once the target of federal prosecution, is likely to announce steps to combat “weaponization” of the department, even as he uses its powers to punish enemies and reward allies.
And Mr. Trump, once a target of prosecution by the Justice Department, is scheduled on Friday to deliver a major “law-and-order” speech in the agency’s great hall — at least as much an expression of conquest and vindication as it is a friendly first visit to a key cabinet department.

Less than 24 hours after saying that Republicans did not have the votes to pass legislation to keep the government open, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced on Thursday that he would vote for the funding bill — an admission it will pass.
“For sure the Republican bill is a terrible option,” Schumer said in a speech on the Senate floor. “But I believe allowing Donald Trump to take … much more power via a government shutdown is a far worse option.”
Make no mistake: This is Schumer caving.
