Not so good here?

From NJBIA:

Report: Employer Announced Layoffs Spike in July, NJ has Highest in Eastern US

Tech, AI and federal tariffs are increasingly blamed for a 29% monthly increase in US employer-announced layoffs nationwide in July, according to a report from Challenger Gray & Christmas, an outplacement firm that helps businesses and employees deal with layoffs.

In New Jersey, there were 3,557 employer-announced job cuts in July, bringing the state’s 2025 year-to-date total to 26,695, the report said. This represents a 362% increase from the same seven-month period in 2024 when there were 5,776 layoffs.

From Patch:

NJ Unemployment Claims Reach Highest Numbers In Years

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits is the highest its been in nearly four years and the Garden State is leading the pack, according to new data released by the federal government.

The seasonally adjusted rate for insured unemployment was 1,974,000 for the week ending July 26, up by 38,000 over the previous week. According to the United States Department of Labor, this is the most since the 2,041,000 claims recorded for the week ending on November 6, 2021.

New Jersey led the nation in July with a 2.8 percent insured unemployment rate that represented 116,153 claims for the week ending July 19. This is a jump of 1,661 from the year prior. The Tri-State area came in high across the board, with Pennsylvania at 1.9 percent and New York at 1.7 percent trailing right behind.

But another President not knowing where he is going? This one thinks Alaska is Russia

I said it the other day, Trump will need to give Putin a piece of Alaska if he wants to get his way, giving away Eastern Ukraine is not sufficient. Clearly the administration realizes that, maybe even conceded that fact in their minds. Hence, he is not going to Alaska, it’ll be Russia soon.

Give away something like Little Diomede Island, it’s not all that strategic. It would allow Putin to make claims about the great US concession to the Russian Empire. He could probably claim it’s a return of their god given territory of Alaska.

    I agree.

Regarding spiral binders, they’ve been fading from use for years. Looks like they made a lot of those presentation binders for slide decks that my salespeople would have to lug from meeting to meeting. Over the last decade, there’s been increasing use of Ipads, the digital deck people look at on their own notebooks, or projected onto screens. Of course virtual online meetings, which are now the majority of meetings, don’t need paper spiral notebooks either. Similar things are happening in the education field, where students are typing their notes on electronic devices rather than keeping things in bulky notebooks. Spiral binders are akin to the buggy-whip makers of the 1920s.

Perhaps tariffs were the last straw for this very aged camel, as tariffs do impose real costs and current tariff policy is so much chaos that it undoubtedly is hurting some US companies at the expense of foreign ones.

I also doubt that most of the people working at this company were primary breadwinners for their families, or that they are all incapable of finding jobs in businesses with a brighter future than spiral binders.

    Make America Great Again, right?

The Trump administration is evaluating plans that would establish a “Domestic Civil Disturbance Quick Reaction Force” composed of hundreds of National Guard troops tasked with rapidly deploying into American cities facing protests or other unrest, according to internal Pentagon documents

3b – I do agree with the new BLS commissioner. Robo calling small businesses to collect data every 2nd week of the month is not the best way to collect statistics for the monthly jobs survey. They call their revisions in the monthly jobs survey a feature not a bug. However it has a real effect on the markets that cannot be discounted.

The revisions happen because of the actual data reported quarterly by businesses to the IRS. IRS Form 941 – Data included: Number of employees, total wages paid, federal income tax withheld, and both the employer and employee shares of Social Security and Medicare taxes.

Again this is a massive government agency $644 Million dollar budget. 2,321 employees. I would love to know where their money is spent…I have a feeling lots of contractors are maintaining old antiquated systems.

Convicted child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell has reportedly been cleared to leave prison on work release.

Podcast host Allison Gill obtained information about Maxwell’s security score, sex offender waiver, and other details after the former partner of Jeffrey Epstein was moved to a minimum-security prison in Texas.

According to journalist Adam Klasfeld, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) raised questions about Maxwell’s new prison accommodations in a letter to the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons. The senator demanded to know if Maxwell received special treatment after meeting with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney.

Documents viewed by Gill indicated that Maxwell was given a 7-point base security score — the highest possible because she is a sex offender and considered a danger to the community.

“Despite her score of 27 resulting in a MINIMUM security level, BOP policy does not allow people with a sex offender PSF (Public Safety Factor) to serve their sentences in minimum security facilities. Someone has to waive the PSF to make that move,” Gill noted.

The documents also showed that Maxwell’s custody level was set to “OUT,” allowing her to leave the prison to work.

Gill explained that sex offender Epstein, Maxwell’s associate, enjoyed the same ability to work outside prison after a “sweetheart deal” penned by attorney Alan Dershowitz and approved by Alex Acosta, who served under former President George W. Bush and Trump

Musk is an aspergersy guy who thinks everyone likes him as much as his yes men and women tell him they do. Mostly his political day job was causing his Tesla sales to crash and that’s supposed to be his top job, so eventually he ran back or even his highly friendly board of directors would have had to do something about him.
He and Trump also lied massively about the cost savings DOGE could produce, because neither one were willing to admit that the budget deficit is primarily driven by transfer payments, i.e. “the welfare state,” and the interest on the debt run up to fund past welfare state spending.

  47. Libturd says:

I see that I am not alone in the layoff pool. Funny Gary. You thought all of my observations were anecdotal at best.

How do TACO tariffs impact layoffs? My former business communication company bought all of it’s paper from Canada. Overnight, Trump announced a 50% tariff on paper. The following day, the company announced a ban on all technology purchases to support any kind of efficiency or quality improvement, i.e. software. We also dropped our huge contract with Adobe and everyone was moved to a shareware version of Acrobat except for the chosen few who relied in scripts written for Adobe Acrobat. Still, the savings would not be enough. Mid managers are extremely valuable when a company is growing. They are the ones who seek out productivity gains and provide the training for it. When overnight, it’s announced the largest company expense is going up 150%, you have no choice but to cut heads. They also announced an early retirement incentive, but I was not old enough for it and not enough people went for it.
This is just my company. I’m sure it was the same with Spiralbind, etc.

It is going to get worse, way worse. Not anecdotal. The costs are going to be passed onto the consumer. A duh. Trump is famous for taking on challenges that pundits say should not be taken on. Then he loses. This is no different. It’s not always political.

BRT, Juice, No One. Read your posts. They reel of partisan bias. Yeah, there were no high earners among those 137. Really? So Crypto traders on Wall Street are what we all need to aspire to? Again, to this day, I have never seen anything purchased with Crypto besides underage gamblers. Hell of an administration to keep rooting for. The tire fire will not be easy to be extinguished.

  48. Brt says:

    Libturd,
I’m not a fan of Trump, or of tariffs (except perhaps on China, Russia, Iran, or just trade restrictions with fundamentally hostile regimes). I’d be a libertarian except that party is intellectually run by potheads and pedos and hippies. Never bought crypto in my life and don’t expect to ever need to. So last election was about picking a poison. Trump has been more retarded than he promised to be. I’m looking forward to a post-Trump politics but unfortunately I think both parties are two sides of a collectivist/fascist coin and are permanently mentally impaired, because philosophically both have gravitated towards their worst inclinations. I’m hoping the Supreme court will shock Trump by clipping his efforts to act like a trade dictator at least. But I also realize the youth of America have been taught for decades by people the majority of whom who hate capitalism, hate individualism, dislike the founding principles of the US, promote racism, and now don’t even care much about individual liberty and freedom of speech, unless it’s the freedom for them to talk about their sexual kinks in class.

  50. Fast Eddie says:

Hell of an administration to keep rooting for.

The last time I felt this proud of my country was when Reagan was president. By his 2nd term, I remember feeling how the country was running on all cylinders. This, when a time where I was more interested in getting women and partying. But it was undeniable. Everyone just felt that American Awe. That American Awe has returned and then some and the world has taken notice. We’re far and above greater than any country on the planet. The enemy within likes to point out these so-called, fake micro failures by this administration but zooming out, we can see unprecedented, groundbreaking ideas that makes you wonder what prior presidents were doing?

We know what the last guy was doing… struggling for air as his minions surrounded the wagons and told us all was well, not only with the corpse called the president but the government overall. Just yesterday, we learned that all those restrictions on Russia were no restrictions at all. They were threats. One of many lying distractions by the democrats. Now, Trump is going to truly strangle Russia and Putin knows it. I could list a thousand blunders by O’Biden’s handlers but why revisit all these disasters?

And then there was the guy before him… a smooth-talking, bullshit artist that fooled some but certainly not all. The same guy(s) I grew up around, smooth-talking brothers with a half-smoked cigarette butt in the suit jacket pocket trying to hawk some broken amp or get rich scheme. Hope and change… the transformation… how easily people are duped. If I didn’t have a heart, I’d be a multi-millionaire.

But Trump makes all others look so, so lazy and non-effective. He keeps pushing and pushing, insisting on success, insisting on getting things done now, insisting that not only Americans should be successful but people around the world as well. Greatness is a matter of doing, not talking. Too many talk, too many point fingers, too many are full of shit, too many are ignorant, too many are arrogant. Trump talks shit but he backs it up ten-fold with achievement. How do you explain this to those that don’t know what they don’t know?

  51. Chad Powers says:

I think to understand Trump you have to keep in mind he is a businessman. He needs to come out on top. Remember that both Schiff and Tish James were/are out to destroy Trump. Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald’s said that if a competitor of his was drowning that he‘d put a hose in his mouth. It isn’t retribution in Trump‘s mind. It is self preservation. Not a Trump fan, but these two are getting what they deserve. Watergate is small potatoes compared to the dirty tricks and manipulation of the law that Trump has been through. No one is above the law, but no one should be below the law either.

  55. 3b says:

No One: I agree. I am not a Trump fan . He should not have been elected for a second term, but he was, and that says a lot about what the Democrats had to offer. Trump and the rise of the right did not happen in a vacuum, and the rise of the far right is a major concern, but we never hear from the media about the rise of the far left, and they are just concerning. They appeal to their base in part because of their peace, love joy we love everyone nonsense, but they don’t. It is a sham, they want power, and leftist totalitarianism . There is absolutely no room for dissent. You agree, or you stay silent, if you don’t you are labeled. The Democrats want to believe that Trump was elected only because of racism/sexism, and I am sure some voted for him because they are racist and sexist. But, I don t believe that is why most voted for him. The Democrats message since the Obama administration is that America is bad,and we have nothing to be proud of. They traffic in race baiting and hatred of anyone who does not share their world view on how horrible and irredeemable the US is, and many Americans are exhausted in hearing it day in and day out. And so, we have Trump again unfortunately. I can respect people that voted for Harris, as she was the lesser of two evils, what I cant understand is Democrats that will tell you with a straight face that she would have made a wonderful President, when in fact it is crystal clear she would have been horrible. We saw it with her performance as VP. Both parties are corrupt and rotten to the core, and the intelligence and qualifications of our current batch on both sides is dismal. I don’t see as solution going forward.

  56. Libturd says:

Well said 3b and spot on.

  57. Libturd says:

“I have about 400 spiral notebooks from the staples 1 cent teacher sales.”

SpiralBind doesn’t make the notebooks. They make the machines that perform the binding of the notebooks. And yeah, I don’t have a lot of those notebooks, but I do have about 100 pocket folders that I paid a nickel or so each for. I use them when I travel to hold all of my documents, of which there are too many too keep track of on my phone.

  58. Brt says:

Great, nothing political in my statement. I was reminiscing the good old days when staples helped out teachers with supplies. I still give those notebooks to kids to this day. For some it’s the first time a teacher encouraged them to take notes.

  59. No One says:

    3b you said it.
I’m old enough to remember Bob Novak and Steven Kinsley debating on “Crossfire” on CNN back in the late 80s. In hindsight the debate from those political journalists were so much smarter and better than the garbage we get now, which is on the level of WWE wrestlers debating. Christopher Hitchens I often disagreed with but he attempted to bring some intellectual rigor to his mostly leftist debates, and was willing to cross lines in seeking truth. Same for George Will on the right.

The current cheerleaders are like Baghdad Bobs for their parties. Slogans and name calling in defense of mostly poor policies. Few actually cares about individual liberties, rule of law, limited government, both sides just want to get their hands on the levers of increasing government power however they can, and then when they do, they turn the firehose of spoils to their constituencies.

Did you see where the Dem DEI DC police chief that DJT just replaced, didn’t even know the meaning of the term ‘chain of command’; not just that she didn’t know the current coc after the fed takeover, she literally did not know what the term meant. As long as you Dem stooges keep producing and promoting imbeciles like this, rational people will keep supporting this administration.

  62. Fast Eddie says:

Hey, is the #metoo movement still a thing? How about the BLM movement? Remember when painting the streets with “BLM” was going to end crime? Are we still pulling down monuments to stop racism? How about women getting stopped at state borders if they are pregnant and dying in hospital parking lots because they couldn’t bludgeon their baby. Are ‘undocumented workers’ still in cages?

Pathetic. The left is pathetic. The left talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and does nothing. Symbolic fucking bullshit. No answers. Today, a group of misfits gathered in Washington DC, singing off key about saving their city from Trump. Meanwhile, at the same time, two blocks away, a guy took a few bullets in a drug-related crime. The left is a threat to democracy… a fucking poisoned, rabid bunch of useless pit bulls.

    >> Fast and Small have every right to be MAGA if that’s how they feel.

MAGA is a cult. Almost everything they stand for is morally wrong, not to mention treasonous and against the constitution of America.

So you defending them makes you one of them if not worse. Like I said before, you are closet MAGA and if you ask your wife she will confirm that you are also gay.

“Did you see where the Dem DEI DC police chief that DJT just replaced, didn’t even know the meaning of the term ‘chain of command’”

Did you see where Trump thought Taiwan and Thailand were the same country? And what did he call rare earth metals? Raw earth? Shall I go on?

  72. Libturd says:

The quality of the posts here have not gone down. Just our quality of life has.

Rent: You need to tone down your rhetoric and get some therapy to deal with all of your issues, including your closet homosexuality. Isn’t that why you make the anti Gay comments? Also the therapy should address why you are envious of other people’s success, and finally your inability to get along with your son.

Now that we have that sorted. I believe it was 69 million people or whatever that number was voted for Trump or MAGA as you say. I am not going to condemn all of those people for how they voted. Just like I don’t condemn those who voted for Harris. As far as posts go, no one posts for crap BS posts then you do, most absolute crap, especially the ones with all of your imaginary friends that you have.

As for cults, you are in one yourself, radical, delusional leftist. You would lock people up for having different political views than yours.

  74. 3b says:

Lib: The quality of the posts have gone down and Rent Lord is the worst offender. You don’t say anything, but you know it’s true. Even the other Democrats, here would agree that Rent Lord has bought the quality of the blog down, with his idiotic rantings and conspiracy theories. And yes, I am guilty of it too, in how I respond to him. Sorry, but he is just an insufferable asshole, and I am just tired of his crap day in and day out.

MAGA is a cult… with a trillion rounds of fucking ammo.

    Fixed it.

Let’s call up the gravy seals. See how they do in ANY major city.

  77. White Trash Eddie says:

How’s that “No Kings” protest going?

    LMAO!

  78. Dark Phoenix says:

“Can’t we all just get along?”

  79. ExLAX says:

    10:30 midterms. Wait.

  80. ExLAX says:

    7:44 spot on.

The 18-year-old high school student said she unzipped her hoodie to show she had breasts after a Buffalo Wild Wings server didn’t believe she is a woman.

And the cult will jump up and down like red assed monkeys.

despite the concerns regarding the quality of the blog, I kind of enjoy it.

This is the time MAGA crowd should boost and write their feelings and euphoria. This is their time and perhaps 18 months left to go.

We are witnessing the country being run from a FOX TV style. Nothing is certain. One day marijuana is bad, then he can open it up. One day Intel CEO is dangerous, next day he is an accomplished fellow. One day he puts high tariffs to Swiss, next day he excludes bullions which is the main import. One day he turns left, next day right. But during that time, family makes $4 BILLION DOLARES, and perhaps more in about 8 months. With this rate, I am guessing the family would make $50 B. And this is what MAGA voted for.

Lets see the pendulum moves back and turns into a wrecking ball. Most folks are well to do here. Here and there we’ll see jobs lost, prices unreliably moving, markets gyrate. But overall, the so called US exceptionalism is long gone. But heck, this is what MAGA voted for.
