North Jersey property taxes rising, again
The typical North Jersey homeowner will pay about $375 more in property taxes over the next year — and will get less for the money in many cases, as communities scale back services.
Tax bills will rise by 4.1 percent, to $9,053, for the typical home in Bergen County and by 5.6 percent, to $8,190, in Passaic County, according to an analysis by The Record.
Residents are shouldering a larger share of the cost to run schools and local and county governments, due to a significant drop in state aid and other revenue, officials said. At the same time, many communities have laid off employees, instituted hiring freezes or cut programs.
“It’s a double whammy,” said William Dressel, executive director of the New Jersey State League of Municipalities.
Residents in many of the region’s lower-income communities were hit with the largest increases.
In the city of Passaic, where 18 police jobs have been eliminated, residents will see a 12.4 percent spike The typical tax hike in Saddle Brook, which laid off five public works employees, will be 7.2 percent. And in Paterson, which put in place employee furloughs, homeowners will pay 9.7 percent more this year.
Meanwhile, Tenafly, Allendale, Palisades Park, Teaneck and Fairview all kept the median tax bill from growing by more than 2 percent.
Local officials said the rise was largely due to factors out of their control: a drop in state aid and increases in health insurance premiums, energy costs and required contributions to the state pension system.
“This is the most difficult time I’ve seen in local government,” said Stephen LoIacono, city manager in Hackensack. “People are angry. It seems like people are demanding more services. The economy is bad, people are losing jobs, people are losing their homes and this is another piece of the pressure people feel.”

The current system is not sustainable only the people really don’t get it. They really do not understand that jobs, benefits and salaries have to be cut, and not just in NJ. Everyone who isn’t named Jamie Dimon or Lloyd Blankfein is going to take a hit. Public employees really don’t understand that there is no money. They do not believe that they won’t get their full pensions and free medical for life. That’s why they are not paying attention. They think the money will magically appear from somewhere and make everything all better because those benefits were promised.
I have a question – public pensions and benefits are guaranteed by the state but what does that mean? Is there a constitutional requirement to pay the benefits promised? What if the state has no money? Does that mean that current revenue has to go to pay benefits as other programs are not funded? Wouldn’t that soon make states in that position look like third world backwaters with crumbling schools, no parks or libraries and potholed streets? Or are the states counting on a federal bailout, so the good people of Nebraska and North Dakota pay for everyone else?
#10 Roundup has a special blend just for poison ivy, oak, sumac, etc. I’ve used it and it works pretty well. Saturate the leaves on a warm dry day. They should start to die in a day or two. Keep watching for new plants – the birds spread the seeds.

If you have tons of ivy/sumac, it is virtually impossible to get rid of all of it. Though, you can control it with the round-up mentioned above. The moment you see the leaves, spray away. To truly rid your property of it professionally is cost prohibitive and chemical-intensive. Spray the round up every two weeks on saplings and you’ll be fine. Word to the wise, never burn it and if you do choose to remove it yourself, wear nothing less than a hazmat suit if you are allergic to it.
And remember thet the vines themselves can get you, not just the leaves.
Quite some years ago I had some persistent poison ivy in my yard. My first attack on the weed, despite my wearing long pants, long sleeves and gloves, resulted in my getting a few breakout spots. The next time I used a special poison plant barrier cream called Ivy Block, and I had no breakouts at all. I can’t say with 100% certainty that the barrier cream was the key, but it can’t hurt to add one more layer of protection.

We finally decided we could turn blue waiting for Ridgewood to come to reasonable levels. We found a place we liked in the neighboring area and are making an offer on it. Does anyone have a home inspector they can recommend in Bergen county?

Poison Ivy: right now, don’t do anything with Roundup or any other pesticides as the plants are already hibernating, and the poison wouldn’t get through. If the leaves are still there (so you can ID the poison ivy), get thick rubber gloves, garden shears and a heavy duty garbage bag; cut out the vines and bag them, wipe the shears with the solvent, then make sure you don’t touch the gloves when removing and disposing them. Next Spring, get a gallon-size spray tank of Poison Ivy grade Roundup or a similar product, get with it into your backyard every 2 weeks beginning in early May and spray whetever poison ivy leaves you see through the whole season. They should be quite dead by the next Fall; just in case, make checks the next year.

Cousins kid had parent/teacher conferences recently; not one of the kids teachers showed up. And why should they? When you’re guaranteed a job regardless of performance, who cares!! You couldn’t have gotten the damn stuff you bought on the card unless they were nice enough to give it you. Same applies to your damn house.

Grocery store owners William and Esperanza Casco were making enough money to stay current on their mortgage, but when JPMorgan Chase & Co. offered a plan that reduced their payments, they figured they could use the extra cash and signed up.
The Cascos say they never missed a subsequent payment, so they were horrified when the bank decided the smaller payments weren’t enough and foreclosed on their modest Long Beach home.
Their story is echoed across the country by people who claim — some in lawsuits — that banks didn’t live up to their end of the deal when they agreed to trial mortgage modifications.

Leading economies should consider readopting a modified global gold standard to guide currency movements, argues the president of the World Bank.
Writing in the Financial Times, Robert Zoellick, the bank’s president since 2007, says a successor is needed to what he calls the “Bretton Woods II” system of floating currencies that has held since the Bretton Woods fixed exchange rate regime broke down in 1971.
Mr Zoellick, a former US Treasury official, calls for a system that “is likely to need to involve the dollar, the euro, the yen, the pound and a renminbi that moves towards internationalisation and then an open capital account”. He adds: “The system should also consider employing gold as an international reference point of market expectations about inflation, deflation and future currency values.”
His views reflect disquiet with the international system, where persistent Chinese intervention to hold down the renminbi is blamed by the US and others for contributing to global current account imbalances and creating capital markets distortions.
This week’s meeting of government heads in South Korea is likely to see yet more exchange rate conflict. A US plan for countries to sign up to current account targets has run into widespread opposition.
Wolfgang Schäuble, Germany’s finance minister, has raised the temperature by describing the US economic model as being in “deep crisis” and criticising the US Federal Reserve’s decision to pump an extra $600bn into financial markets. “It is not consistent when the Americans accuse the Chinese of exchange rate manipulation and then steer the dollar exchange rate artificially lower with the help of their [central bank’s] printing press.”
Although there are occasional calls for a return to using gold as an anchor for currency values, most policymakers and economists regard the idea as liable to lead to overly tight monetary policy with growth and unemployment taking the brunt of economic shocks.
The original Bretton Woods system, instituted in 1945 and administered by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank’s sister institution, comprised fixed but adjustable exchange rates linked to the value of gold. Controls to restrict destabilising shifts of capital from one economy to another buttressed it.

The new offerings include ways to look at your rent and utility payments, figure out your income, gauge your home’s value and even rate your banking habits based on details like whether your direct deposits have stopped.
All of this could influence your financial freedom—not to mention the number of junk-mail solicitations you receive.
Ken Lin, CEO of Credit Karma, a credit-score information website, knew he had a good credit score. But when he recently applied for a new credit card, he was rejected: The lender had flagged him as a higher credit risk because the value of his California home had declined and his mortgage principal wasn’t declining—giving away that he has an interest-only mortgage.
“It’s a lot more than just your credit score today,” he says.
Your credit record still matters, of course. But here are some newer ways lenders and financial-services companies are sizing up your financial behavior and credit-worthiness:
• Bank-depositor behavior scores. Fair Isaac, the creator of the widely used FICO credit score, is marketing bank-depositor behavior scores, which are used by banks to assess their own customers.

When James Renfro had to stop making payments on his two-story fixer-upper in Parma, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland, he triggered events that were supposed to result in the forced sale of his home.
That Nov. 15 auction has been canceled because of defects in documents submitted by his loan servicer, Ally Financial Inc.’s GMAC Mortgage unit. Two affidavits about Renfro’s home were signed by Jeffrey Stephan, a GMAC employee who said in sworn depositions in Florida and Maine that he hadn’t read thousands of affidavits he’d signed.
Renfro’s case has created a showdown between GMAC and Ohio’s Attorney General Richard Cordray. Cordray has asked Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Nancy Russo not to let GMAC simply submit new documents to cure defects without consequences.
