More millionaires in NJ

From the Star Ledger:

N.J. has 2nd-highest percentage of households worth $1 million or more, study says

New Jersey has the second-highest percentage of households worth at least $1 million in the country, according to a study by Phoenix Marketing International, a global marketing services firm.

With 3.3 million households, the Garden State has 242,647 whose total worth exceeded $1 million in 2013. That worked out to almost 7.5 households out of every 100 in New Jersey.

Only Maryland had a greater percentage at 7.7 percent.

New Jersey moved up from the No. 3 spot in 2012 when it had 235,292 millionaire households, or 7.27 percent, according to the study.

New Jersey held the top position in 2007 when 7.12 percent of the state’s households — 228,442 — were worth at least that much.

Since 2006, the state has floated between the top and third rankings, but the number of top-end households has grown every year.

Does that mean they’re getting a smaller EITC check now? Is that what you consider a tax hike? Maybe no more Section 8 benefits or food stamps? Are those tax hikes too?

I ask because I’m not sure how you hike taxes on people who aren’t paying any.

90- Doesn’t matter…..we still have the second highest % of millionaire households.

A million dollars isn’t what it used to be to wealthy americans that are worth millions or billions. To the avg person, a net-worth of a million dollars is a lot when your net-worth is near 0. Add in the fact that 7.5 out of 100 families in NJ (one of the richest states) are worth a million or more, and you have your evidence to support that it is still rare to be worth a million or more. If the second highest state (nj) is only hitting at 7.5%, imagine what these other state rates are at.

Not commenting on whether it’s right or wrong, good policy or bad policy….but just annoyed that everything has to be so god damn partisan. Call it for what it is man…obfuscating/spinning ad nauseum on this kind of thing is a tired tactic.

I wonder if NJ people who responded to the survey understood that they are supposed to subtract their debt like mortgages, car loans, and credit card balances from their net worth. Also, one shouldn’t assume that your home is worth what the realtors humping on your granite kitchen countertop tell you.

I read that article and it never says their definition of “net worth” one million. If you count real estate, cars and 401Ks big freekin deal.

At places like JP Morgan or US trust they consider one million to be excluding real estate, cars, 401Ks and illiquid securities. Basically, cash, short term treasury bonds, short term CDs are all you count.

New Quiz Show…..Which AFC QB Has The Hottest Wife (clot Edition)?
Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill may not have a cannon for a right arm, but he legally owns a rifle — and his model wife, Lauren (inset), brings it with her for simple chores, such as renting a car.

She left an AR 15 military-style assault rifle in a zipped bag in their rental Nissan Rogue, and it was found by a vacationing mom from New York and her daughter earlier this month, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

Judith Fleissig, of Rochester, immediately called E-Z Rent-A-Car and drove to the nearest police station.

“We got out of the car, we were kind of freaked out,” Fleissig recalled. “I didn’t want to touch it. I took a picture, zipped it back up and went to the police station. They came out and took it.”

Authorities conducted a review and determined it was legally owned and accidentally left behind.

The 26-year-old model, who has been featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” married the Dolphins quarterback in January 2012. Those who follow the two on Twitter wouldn’t be surprised to know they own such a weapon. Pictures on the social media site show her and her husband shooting guns together. Ryan Tannehill, a Texan, has often talked about his hunting experiences.

The Tannehills view this as a personal matter, according to a Dolphins spokesman the Sun Sentinel reported.

The gun legally belongs to Ryan Tannehill. The couple called the rental car company to report the missing item, without specifying what was in the bag, a league source told the newspaper’s website.

According to a sheriff’s report, Lauren Tannehill rented the white Nissan Rogue on Jan. 4 and returned it two hours later to the rental company, E-Z Rent-A-Car at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Tannehill exchanged it for a different car.

Not surprising at all. And the reason that the guy in the story got pulled over was because he had Florida plates. Talk about profiling.

Maryland cops in general are the biggest a holes that I’ve ever had the displeasure to deal with. They are well known for being jerks. I recall one county cop in Silver Spring who wrote my wife up for a nonexistent violation. In court, he admitted that the violation could not have occurred but then said that she was guilty of something else, and the judge allowed it (blatant violation of MD law, BTW). She was able to beat that back at appeals but we were pissed. I was so pissed that I reported the judge to the Maryland Committee on Judicial Disability, claiming that he was unfit. That’s way at least, I will have manufactured a conflict in his court so he could never pull that on us again.

Some months later I saw the same cop at an intersection, writing the same violations. I told him “I know what you’re doing and I’m going to report you”. He told me to stay there. I said why? He said “I’m going to have you arrested for threatening a police officer.” I said “bring it”. Long story short, his sergeant came down and we discussed it, all the while having a stare off with the cop. The sergeant told me to let it blow over and it would on his end, and so I left.

I know that some people would say that was foolish, but I wasn’t intimidated insofar as I’ve been around cops all my life. I also knew that the record of my wifes proceeding, and my standing in the community, meant that it would not be a good narrative for him.

I’ve found that as long as you are polite, composed, yet unyielding when you’re right, cops will not try that BS too much.

No idea what the guy from Florida will do about the MTAP cop, but I know that I’d be lawyered up by now.

  23. JJ says:

Of course they pull you over with Florida Plates, Alabama is another big one.

In college for a few months I had a car registered in Florida, typical $400 dollar junker. Florida at time had no required car insurance and no inspection. Also back then just a rear license plate and no sticker on windshield.

Also outside NY some states have loosey goosey registration procedures. Heck Albama lets you register cars in PO boxes and does not even check vin numbers. or if car is salavage. Folks also “wash” cars through these states. Take a salvage car, car with bad car fax stolen car and register it between a few southern states then back to NY for clean title.

Plus all the Brooklyn folks insure at grandmas house in florida to save on insurance. Also popular with DWI folks, register car in Florida.

My ‘florida” car was not even in my name. Other trick folks use pick a name and address out of phone book mail your cousin the title, have him register it down south and mail you the plates. Folks on welfare, illegals and folks with DWIs buy junker cars and pull this stunt.

Also throw in firecracker and cigarette runs from down south.

So wife implies he may have his illegal gun with him and that is when trouble starts.

  27. Street Justice says:

You missed the whole point of the article. The gun is not illegal. 40 of 50 states in the US allow you to carry them in that situation. Even if the state said it wasn’t legal for him to carry it in that situation it’s likely that law would be unconstitutional.

The guy had is family in the car, christmas presents and everything….he did not fit the profile of a gun smuggler. His wife reacted the way most wives do, the cop is just a hothead and a gun owner hatinig ball buster.

It boils down to this…Many cities in the Northeast have problems with crime and violence. Politicians and the public (who’se thinking is biased with images of gun violence in movies) think that all guns are just bad and the cause of the problem and they want to cut off the supply of guns. In practice, the gun laws passed do not cut off the supply of “illegal” guns, they only cut off the supply of “legal” guns to legal gun owners. Laws that we’re told are designed to be used as tools to prevent gang bangers from shooting us, are really designed to discourage legal gun ownership.

Just as we can’t stop people from stealing our cars, you can’t un-invent the gun. I’m sure the cartels south of the border who supply all of our drugs (and are really logistics companies who deal in contraband) would be all to happy to supply local gangs with guns if we chased every legal gun owner, legal gun shop, and legal gun manufacturer out of the area. It’s a whack a mole game and they can’t completely cut off the supply and they can’t completely keep us safe all the time. Law abiding citizens should have the right to be armed and should not have their balls busted by some hothead gun-hating cop.

That’s why, unless absolutely imperative, you don’t speak to cops who have stopped you.

Let me repeat: You don’t speak to cops who have stopped you.

Name, rank and serial number is all you have to provide. You can hand over a license and say nothing more and that isn’t illegal.

You don’t even have to roll down the windows except as necessary to pass papers. And if its daytime, put on sunglasses and leave them on.

Finally, FWIW, NJ cops are just as bad about this. They got hammered for profiling some years back so it isn’t as bad, but if you have southern plates and are white, you are gonna get stopped and have your car tossed.

  29. joyce says:

Yup, just like me and Happy were saying the other day. There is no benefit in talking to them, ever. I understand, but don’t agree with, the choice cops make to harass out-of-staters vs locals. If you are worried about whether that is a crime, here is a summary of the NJ law from a reporter’s website:

Summary of statute(s): An individual who is a party to either an in-person conversation or electronic communication, or who has the consent of one of the parties to the communication, can lawfully record it or disclose its contents, unless the person is doing so for the purpose of committing a criminal or tortious act. A person also can lawfully record electronic communications that are readily accessible to the general public. N.J. Stat. Ann. § 2A:156A-4 (West 2012). – See more at: http://www.rcfp.org/reporters-recording-guide/state-state-guide/new-jersey#sthash.NvhrjPic.dpuf

BTW, if you are recording yourself and another person speaking, that is one person consent unless you don’t consent to recording yourself.

But no one in my family likes guns. My father in law has not shot or held a gun since his last day in the army. My uncle had a gun discharge once in a empty house when checking his bullet chambers and almost killed his own kid. He did not. But that guy did 35 years on force and only once ever did the gun fire ever and he almost nailed his own kid. Plenty of other relatives in WWII.

None of them particularly were gun nuts, none ever hunted. Heck my neighbor who was a cop at the time called the cops himself when he saw a prowler in backyard. I said but you have a gun. He is like what idiot goes out in his PJs at two am with a gun in his own backyard looking for criminal. Funny part is only guy near me who is a big gun owner is this guy with who did not go to college who has a dead end job at airport married to a blonde women who is a another did not go to college.
