Corzine wants to build 100,000 affordable homes over next decade
“Plans will be set by the end of the year to build 100,000 homes for low-income New Jerseyans over the next decade, Gov. Jon S. Corzine said today as he vowed to spend more money on renters and the homeless.”
“Corzine said he expects housing officials to finalize within the next six months a blueprint to expand affordable housing throughout New Jersey, where tens of thousands of people are awaiting housing help.”
“‘Affordable housing is the basic building block for transforming lives,’ Corzine told about 250 members of the Housing & Community Development Network of New Jersey during a meeting inside a capital city hotel.”
“New Jersey is the most expensive state for homeowners and the third most expensive state for renters, according to the U.S. Census.”
“Corzine said he hasn’t estimated a cost for his plan, but said substandard housing often leads to social ills such as crime and health problems that cost the state money.”

Corzine Building 100,000 Affordable Homes?
Well, pretty much everybody in NJ will be poor with NJ taxes so those apartments are certainly needed.
It’s important to keep in mind what Corzine and the rest of the NJ gov. means when they say “affordable” housing.
They are mostly talking about housing affordable to people with “moderate income” — defined as 80 percent of a given region’s median income.
for a simple number, check out Monmouth County, median income of roughly $80K moderate for a family of 4 translates to about $65K.
what they are primarily being offered is a 3 br condo for something like $160K. A bargain for sure, but not too far off what a non-bubble market would likely provide.
The state has some other tricks up its sleeve to meet Corzine’s 100k number, so I wouldn’t worry too much about your neighborhood going to the dogs. How many people could afford to buy the house they live in today based on their income and the current market.
Screw affordable homes, I want affordable taxes!

Housing has become more unafforable than affordable. Someone making $75,000 – $100,000 cannot afford to live in NYC or Northern NJ on their own with rents & prices the way they are today.
Many are commuting from eastern suffolk or western PA to Midtown Manhattan.

I guess Cora”zone” never hear of the “PROJECTS”. When built, they were not sub standard, but turned that way, since the people didn’t earn it or have to pay fo it themselves.
This is the begining of the big giveaway we were all expecting at the expense of the taxpayers. I guess there is enuf tax money lying around in boxes in Trenton, or enought in the tax increse to fund the program.
The local pols will declare eminent domain, the connected builders will build these houses with some corrupt state board overseeing it.
I understand the school supers, the port authority police and the triple dipping polititions (some from prison or on probation) are providing the front money from their pension windfalls.
Sounds like a (new jersey) plan.
If Corzine wants 100,000 “affordable” homes let him pay for them with his own money. He can certainly afford it.
