From the Record:
Sex abusers may face housing rules
WAYNE — The Township Council wants to restrict where some convicted sex offenders can live.
But a constitutional law expert said the state Legislature and courts have already beaten the township to the establishing of such controls.
On Wednesday, the council introduced an ordinance that would prohibit convicted sex offenders — those determined by the state to pose a moderate to high risk of committing another crime — from living within 1,000 feet of a school, day-care center, park, playground, or recreation or sports center. Only new residents, not current ones, would be affected by the ordinance.
With the proposal, Wayne joins more than a dozen municipalities in North Jersey, including Prospect Park, West Paterson, Wallington and Paramus, that have considered such restrictions on convicted sex offenders.
