Flooding kicks off new wave of Blue Acres buyouts

From ABC News:

Flood-stricken New Jersey residents look into government-funded home buyout program

The flooding in parts of New Jersey over the past few months left mounts of headaches for residents.

Countless residents from those affected areas came out to meet with New Jersey State Department of Environmental Protection officials in Pompton Lakes Thursday night to learn about the Blue Acres Program.

The program is voluntary and it relocates flood-stricken residents who are considering government-funded buyouts of their homes.

It eligible, homeowners would be offered fair market value for their homes, using state and federal funds.

“I’ve been in this town 60 years,” said David Woll of Pompton Lakes. “So, I’ve been through enough floods.”

For 10-year-old Melina, who says she was trapped inside her Wayne home during the recent storms, it’s a tough decision.

“I like my school and I wanna stay in my school, but I don’t like the flooding,” she said.

Her family bought their Wayne home six years ago.

But the flooding problems have been worse than expected.

From CBS News:

Some New Jersey flood victims looking to be bought out by government

Flooding across New Jersey in recent months has many residents in those areas saying they’ve had enough.

Thursday afternoon, some flood victims met with New Jersey’s Blue Acres, a government buy-out program.

This is the second Blue Acres meeting this month at the library in Lodi, a borough that’s seen its share of flooding. The one-on-one meetings are closed to the media and flood victims from across the state can attend.

Some tell us while the program is voluntary, the buy-out offers are low and confusing.

“We had the sewage coming up through this pipe, which was insane,” Manville homeowner Brianna Lohr said.

Lohr has begun the buy-out process and says even though she’s being offered what she and her boyfriend paid at the time of flood, she doesn’t care.

“Sign me up. I will sign the line. If we could get out today, we absolutely would,” she said.

Other residents in flood-ravaged neighborhoods say they want the full market value of their homes.

“They are saying that it is market value at the time of the incident, which is not fair,” Milford resident Leeana Jones said.

Jones’ life was turned upside down after Hurricane Ida damaged her Milford home and sent water into the basement.

She says she can’t get more funding to raise her home like others and her credit’s shot after making repairs.

Shawn M. Latourette, the commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection, oversees the federally funded Blue Acres program. He says the rules are mandated by Congress.

“That is tied to fair market value at the time of the event, and it is one of those issues of bureaucracy that is a bit ignorant of or not attuned to the realities, the facts on the ground,” he said.

Glad to see NJ tackling the tough issues, height and weight discrimination protections. Really though, when are we going to move on to the tough stuff, we need to expand discrimination protections to those who modify their bodies through tattoo, piercing, hair coloring, or otherwise. In a recent survey of HR execs, 78% said they would be less likely to hire someone with a facial tattoo, outright discrimination. C’mon Murphy, be the first in the nation to normalize Post Malone. Call it the “No Ragrets” bill.

Even during this massive war on their doorstep Europe refuses to arm up for a potential battle with Russia. If any NATO member is invaded all NATO members are supposed to be ready and respond with boots on the ground.

    News today..

“Some two-thirds of NATO’s 31 member countries are expected to reach the defense spending target of two percent of GDP in 2024, officials said Tuesday, almost double last year’s number.”

So it sill was just 1% of GDP or even LESS for the majority of NATO. They expect US Soldiers to do all the heavy lifting. Many NATO countries armies are more like the National Guard here part time soldiers.. They won’t be ready for a fight in Poland or Lithuania is Putin decides to reunite the land that between Kaliningrad and mother Russia.

We spend 3.5% of GDP on our military. It is 20 percent of the US federal budget…..

As Chuck Schumer says It will be Americans fighting if Ukraine loses…

  9. No One says:

“Is that how a reasonable president should persuade NATO members to do more…”

As a matter of principal, I agree with you that presidents should act ‘presidential’. But fact is, none of the ‘reasonable’ presidents prior to T had any success in convincing the 70% of NATO members that fail to meet their financial commitment, to meet their their financial commitment. So for me personally, I no longer care how the president delivers the message to our mostly useless, deadbeat ‘allies’.

  16. No One says:

Estonia is a small, advanced, and quite free country, much like a number of former USSR colonies. I hear it’s become a tech and finance hub. I know it’s quite pretty to visit. Biden should make some noise about Russia’s threat. The Russians want to arrest their Prime Minister unknown reasons, probably because she supports Ukraine and tore down some Soviet Military monuments in Estonia. Her party supports free trade and low taxes, classical liberalism, the stuff the Republican party now disdains under Trump. I wonder if Trump will open his big mouth and welcome Russia to capture Estonia’s prime minister?

While they don’t have a horde of men to send into battle, they are physically in the front lines with Russia and have been in NATO for 19 years. Undoubtedly military assets can be forward positioned in Estonia, which is probably the biggest contribution they can make.
Take Turkey, which is generally a shit NATO partner in terms of behavior, it’s biggest asset is its position, and willingness to allow other assets to be there and fly over there. If they weren’t in a good spot relative to US interests, they’d probably have been told to go to hell a long time ago. Instead they keep getting cash inflows. But the US gets room to maneuver at times in return.
The US can’t flip geostrategic partners like Donald Trump flips wives.

If you own well known common assets they will transfer easily in the ACATS system or slower by snail mail, no need to sell.
