President Trump said on social media Thursday that he is directing the federal government to buy $200 billion in mortgage bonds, a move he argued would help reduce mortgage rates at a time when Americans are worried about home prices.
Mr. Trump and the White House have been trying to show they are responding to voter concerns about affordability ahead of midterm elections in November. Home prices have generally risen faster than incomes because of a persistent construction shortfall, making it harder for renters to buy their first home and for existing owners to upgrade to a new property — a challenge that dates back to Mr. Trump’s first term and the recovery from the housing market collapse that triggered the global financial crisis in 2008.
Mr. Trump last month said he planned to unveil housing reforms — and on Wednesday, he announced that he wants to block institutional investors from buying houses.
The president said Thursday that the two mortgage giants under government conservatorship, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, have $200 billion in cash that will be used to make the mortgage bond purchases.
“This will drive Mortgage Rates DOWN, monthly payments DOWN, and make the cost of owning a home more affordable,” he posted on Truth Social.

Renee Good had ties to an organized anti-ICE network in Minneapolis that trains participants to monitor and interfere with federal immigration enforcement operations, the New York Post reported.
According to the Post, Good became involved with a group known as “ICE Watch,” a loose coalition dedicated to documenting and disrupting ICE activity in the sanctuary city.
Similar ICE Watch-style networks have emerged nationwide and have previously been linked to confrontations with federal agents, including incidents involving vehicles used to block or strike officers.

That ICE officer was in the wrong place and that woman panicked. He should have just moved aside instead of firing first because he had to move aside anyway.
The polices and laws should be changed for explicit prohibitions on shooting at vehicles because of the laws of physics.
If a cop shoots the driver of a car barreling toward them, it does not bring that vehicle to an immediate stop, the vehicle often continues on its path as it did in this shooting in Minneapolis and well the cop had to step out of the way anyway.

An Illinois man has been charged with running a hacking scheme that targeted nearly 600 women on Snapchat, stealing intimate photos and selling them online.
Kyle Svara, 26, from Oswego allegedly tricked victims into handing over security codes by pretending to be a Snapchat employee, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.
He now faces a string of serious charges, including aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, computer fraud, conspiracy, and making false statements linked to child pornography.
Investigators said Svara first collected victims’ emails, phone numbers, and usernames.
When Snapchat flagged suspicious activity and sent security codes to users, Svara allegedly texted them from an anonymous number, posing as a company representative and asking for the codes.
Around 570 women fell victim to the scam, giving him access to at least 59 accounts, according to prosecutors. He then downloaded nude and semi-nude images and sold or traded them on illicit online forums.
Authorities claim Svara also took requests from other users, including the disgraced Northeastern track coach Steve Waithe, who wanted photos of specific women.
Waithe was sentenced in March 2024 to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to crimes that targeted dozens of women he personally knew.
