Hudson River tunnel project back on, says Schumer
The Gateway Project, a plan to build a high-speed railway corridor under the Hudson River between New Jersey and New York, is back on.
A day after Amtrak president Steven Gardner testified before the New Jersey Senate Legislative Oversight Committee about the railway’s outdated equipment and much-needed repairs, Senator Chuck Schumer proposed an updated tunnel as a solution.
The Gateway Project was originally proposed in 2011 at a cost of $14 billion, after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie thwarted a similar plan called Access to the Region’s Core (ARC) in 2010 over cost concerns.
Amtrak’s only problem with the Gateway Plan was how to finance it.
But on Monday, Schumer told an audience at New York University’s Rudin Center for Transportation Policy & Management that the project should be partially funded by creating a development group called Gateway Development Corporation.
“The scale of the project is so large that we need to leverage the resources of all transportation and state agencies we have to achieve progress,” Schumer said. “I’m going to try to get the federal government to pay for as much of this as possible.
“We are fast approaching a regional transportation Armageddon: the busiest rail line in the country stranded without a way in New York.”

Though the original tunnel plan was priced at $14 billion, Schumer said that two new tunnels should be build and, with repairs to exisiting tunnels, the price could top $25 billion — a number that will continue to grow the longer the project takes to complete.

A planned right-of-way would run parallel to the current one between Newark Penn Station and New York Penn Station in Midtown.The project would construct new rail bridges in the New Jersey Meadowlands, create new tunnels under the Hudson Palisades and the Hudson River, convert parts of the James Farley Post Office into a rail station, and add a terminal annex to NY Penn Station.

“It can solve a lot of long-standing, long-festering dysfunctional relationships,” said Martin Robins, who in the 1990s directed an earlier project that was canceled five years ago by Mr. Christie over budget concerns.

Mr. Schumer noted his broader proposal includes letting Amtrak use operating profits generated by its Northeast Corridor for capital projects on the heavily traveled stretch between Washington and Boston.
That idea has been championed by Republican lawmakers, and Mr. Schumer said he was hopeful transportation-funding bills in Congress might eventually pay for new tunnels.
“The logjam on federal funding for transportation is beginning to break, so this is an opportune time,” Mr. Schumer said, adding: “No one thinks it will be easy.”
Maybe they can crowd fund the tunnel or somebody will come up with an idea for uber trains.
Taxes are crowdfunding.
I just hope it’s a national crowdfunding campaign and not local.
This is starting to smell like an agency power grab over who gets the tunnel.

Unfortunately, it is politically probably the worst time to try to push this. With Christie running for president, there will be much more focused on this then there would be otherwise. Does anybody really think that the delegations in Texas and Georgia and Florida Are going to back tax dollars going to a mondo expensive project in New York and New Jersey? And when the inevitable cost or runs make the Big Dig look like a bargain in comparison, will those same states still continue funding?
The only way that the feds realistically pick up much more of the funding would be if one of the following two things happen: The Democrats take back Congress and the White House or part of it on the bus transportation bill that lavishes lots of highway money on the south and west.

After all, childcare only works when the cost per hour of childcare is lower than the hourly income of the payer. Reduce the income gap, using external childcare becomes a losing proposition. The only caveat is economies of scale and mass childcare.
The negative comparisons to the Big Dig never make sense to me, I lived in the area before and during the Big Dig and traffic now is nothing like it was, and a billion old ladies in the North End got rich and the city generally improved drastically. It corrected a real problem. It wasn’t exactly a a national priority, but the busiest Amtrak facility in the country should be a national priority.
We should make the guy just fired from Jets the new Gov of NJ.
If he is willing to break a jaw over six hundred buck debt I say turn him loose on the unions.

HGTV ‘Kitchen Cousins’ hosts in dispute over work at Mattingly’s former Tenafly home
The co-hosts of HGTV’s “Kitchen Cousins” home improvement show filed for personal bankruptcy last week when faced with an unfavorable arbitration ruling over their allegedly shoddy renovation of a Bergen County home where N.Y. Yankee great Don Mattingly used to live.
John Colaneri of Ramsey and his TV co-star, Anthony Carrino of Jersey City, separately filed in Newark on Aug. 4 on the heels of a nearly $860,000 arbitration award in favor of two unhappy customers who own the 4,000-square-foot home in Tenafly.
In 2013, current owners Robert and Peng Avery sued Colaneri, Carrino and Carrino’s Brunulleschi Construction for fraud, breach of contract and other wrongdoing in connection to the alleged renovation gone wrong. The Averys alleged they had paid Brunelleschi more than $200,000 for botched work, including gaps in sheetrock, improperly installed ductwork, incomplete plumbing hookups, and other problems.
The case ended up in arbitration, and the $857,894 award decision, signed July 23, has not yet been approved by the state court in Bergen County. The award includes about $177,000 in attorney’s fees and three times the actual damages on some of the claims because of alleged state Consumer Fraud Act violations.
The bankruptcy filings prevent the Averys from moving ahead with liens against the TV co-hosts, and “allows time to defend against further action,” said Wayne lawyer David L. Stevens, who is representing Carrino and Colaneri.
The pair should have never been named individually as defendants in the case, according to Stevens. The dispute has “nothing to do with them personally,” he said.
However, Hackensack lawyer Michael Kates, who represented the Averys in the lawsuit, disagrees. Carrino was the construction manager on the job and Colaneri worked on the project as an employee, Kates said.
“My poor clients now have to presumably obtain bankruptcy counsel,” Kates said.
According to bankruptcy court documents, Colaneri’s secured creditors include ConnectOne Bank in Englewood Cliffs, which is owed nearly $1 million on a mortgage loan, and both men list the Averys as their largest unsecured creditor.
The job was not featured on “Kitchen Cousins,” which premiered in 2011, nor on the more recent spin-offs “Cousins On Call” and “Cousins Undercover.” Neither the shows nor HGTV were parties to the lawsuit.
Local property records show the Averys paid nearly $1.3 million in 2012 for the house. According to their lawyer, they were not able to move in until earlier this summer, after paying another contractor to complete the renovation.
The Averys are the third owners since Mattingly, who sold the house when he retired after the 1995 season to fellow Yankee Tino Martinez, his replacement at first base. Martinez sold it about five years later for $950,000, property records show

Not sure a woman could even keep a decent job when constantly having to leave work and/or take day off when kid is sick. Plus, they close for a week this month and they also close in Sept for 5 days and we pay full month regardless. It is a germ-filled racket. No wonder Romney saw a good way to exploit the situation and make handsome profits. Main issue is debt. House, taxes, student loan debt, bills..nearly impossible on one income. Not sure selfishness is primary reason. Nanny is way to go if you can afford it. Ask Affleck about extra benefits as well.

Back in the day I used to ride a stand up Yamaha Jet ski off of 7 President’s beach when they allowed watercraft etc on the beach. We used to jump the waves and piss off the surfers. Great times back then beach, beer, babes, jet skis, motorcycles, Donovan’s Reef and Tradewinds when Rock and Roll was in.
Once I broke down about 1 mile out. Longest swim of my life, getting into the beach even with a vest on with light chop was tough enough. I don’t think I would have made it without the tide going in.

Outside of that, they take one full week off ever year during the week the July 4th holiday is observed….even though that is part of their regular vacation schedule, they charge us 3/4 the normal tuition rate for July.

OMG NO. After my Dad died my Mom went back to work full time when I was 16, every single night we had to listen about what went on at work, gossip, people passed over for promotions. Then when I got married my Wifes Mom was still working as her husband made peanuts. We go to dinner there and it was like my Mom was alive again, trivial gossip, complaints about mgt and when you needed baby sitting or for her to come to school play she was never around. By the time she retired she missed all three of her kids activities and six of her grandchildren activities none of whom know much about her even though they grew up within 15 miles of her.
Then I got married and my wife who is amazing while dating and engaged all at once I live with full time she comes home and I start hearing it is a boys club at work, who got bigger promotion, how boss does not know he is doing, baby showers and weddings stuff about work all people I dont know or care about. This lasted for a full two years till she quit to be a Mom.
Now I come home to a clean house, dinner on the table, home work done and bills paid and dont get the blah blah blah. Heck I lived with a roomate for three years and did we come home from work and talk about work. No way.

RE Daycare – Full time daycare in Hoboken – top price I’ve seen is 2,375 /month and that doesn’t include food.
Said daycare was near capacity as well for this school year.
Comparison – I spent less on annual tuition at my 4 year institution of choice. The above is to watch a 2 year old for 9 hours a day.
Re: #59- I have said it before the money I saved by moving out of Hoboken and it’s high daycare costs pays my entire mortgage payment. There are of course other costs along with the house but I am not flushing rent money either. My old place in Hoboken rented for $3,500 a month. I was shelling out around 8 grand a month for just housing and daycare in Hoboken. The money we save allows my wife to work part time. Unlike JJ I want my wife to work. Who needs Peg Bundy in this day and age anyway?
Homeboken – full time full day care near Bloomfield will run under$1500/month. Does not include lunch but does include breakfast and snacks. There is a wait list to get the kids into any room other than the infant center.
Let me correct that. Based on the kitchen set up at our daycare, the State of NJ will not allow them to say that they serve breakfast. They provide an “early morning starter snack.”

What a crock. We bring our son to Jewish day care facility though we are not Jewish ourselves. They had opening that we needed. They are closed for big Jewish holidays in Sept. but noticed they are closed Xmas eve, Day and New Years. Talk about having cake and eating it too.

BERLIN — A teenager has made an unexpected find while swimming in a lake in the German Alps: a 17.6-ounce bar of gold.
Police said Wednesday that they are still trying to figure out where the bar comes from and how it got into the Konigssee lake, a popular tourist destination near Berchtesgaden on the border with Austria.
The 16-year-old girl, who was on vacation, found it around 6½ feet under the surface on Friday and handed it in to police.
Divers on Tuesday carried out a thorough search of the area around where the bar was found, but didn’t find any more gold or other valuables.

or the first time in nearly 10 years, the number of far-right extremist and hate groups has fallen in the United States, according to a report by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), but New Jersey’s number remains high for its size.
Throughout the country, there are still nearly double the amount of radical-right hate groups or “patriot” groups, as the SPLC calls them, as there were in the late 1990s.
But for the first time since 2000, the number has gone down, according to a report in the Spring 2014 issue of the SPLC’s quarterly investigative journal, Intelligence Report.
Hate groups, which include neo-Nazis, Klansmen, white nationalists, neo-Confederates, racist skinheads and black separatists, have declined in number by seven percent — from 1,007 in 2012 to 939 in 2013.
The anti-government “Patriot” movement, composed of armed militias, declined by 19 percent from 1,360 groups in 2012 to 1,096 in 2013.
In New Jersey, there are 44 hate groups identified by the SPLC’s report, mostly racist skinhead groups.
“It’s quite a high number for a state of its size,” said Mark Potok, senior fellow at the SPLC and editor of the report. “There’s really been a problem of neo-Nazi groups in New Jersey.”
The Atlantic City Skins, a neo-Nazi group, has the largest number of chapters in the state with 14 based in cities from Wildwood to Brick.
The highest number of hate groups were found in California (77), Texas (57) and Florida (58).
