Turns out millennials are not all that different

From the WSJ:

Millennials Continue to Leave Big Cities

Large U.S. cities lost tens of thousands of millennial and younger Gen X residents last year, according to Census figures released Thursday that offer fresh signs of cooling urban growth.

Cities with more than a half million people collectively lost almost 27,000 residents age 25 to 39 in 2018, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of the figures. It was the fourth consecutive year that big cities saw this population of young adults shrink. New York, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Washington and Portland, Ore., were among those that lost large numbers of residents in this age group.

The drop in young urban residents last year was smaller than in 2017, when big cities lost nearly 54,000 residents in this age group. But the sustained declines signal a sharp reversal from the beginning of the decade, when young adults flooded into cities and helped lead an urban revival.

Separate Census figures show the majority of people in these age groups who leave cities move to nearby suburbs or the suburbs of other metro areas.

City officials say that high housing costs and poor schools are main reasons that people are leaving. Although millennials—the cohort born between 1981 and 1996—are marrying and having children at lower rates than previous generations, those who do are following in their footsteps and often settling down in suburbs.

The fake news people are insufferable. They are becoming more and more outlandish.

Even the term whistleblower is fake news. Its is an orchestrated political leak. Dress it up in righteous language and then create a back story to fit.

  4. GdBlsU45 says:

Sadly all legal. Get your crack addict son appointed to a few fake board seats and take indirect payoffs. Similar loopholes to the Clinton fake charity.

We need term limits and campaign reform. It’s the only way to root out the corruption.

And we need to start holding bureaucrats accountable when they break the law. Of course we’ll find out this leak was illegal but fake news will ignore that.

    Hillary Clinton.

Yup, that Hillary Clinton. Seriously can not make this stuff up.

Sorry, the son of an American politician on the board of an Eastern European oil/gas company? You know, because some random foreigner that has absolutely zero experience running an oil/gas company is the perfect board choice, this is so purely coincidental there’s nothing to see there. No quid pro quo, etc.

Oh, and let’s pay him $50,000 a month for it. $50,000 a month. The average monthly wage in Ukraine is $300. So let’s pay him 166 times the average wage for the population. Suppose that’s fair, you know, given that he’s taking all the time and effort of lending his vast energy experience to this small foreign company. I’m sure it will turn up that he spent minimal time actually conducting board business, meaning he was probably paid in excess of ten thousand dollars an hour. Eh, who are we kidding, they conduct board business in Ukranian, not English, so it’s probably fair to say he didn’t do anything for the $600,000 annual salary they paid him.

    Nothin to see there guys.

Grim – Kill two birds with one stone?

Get Biden and Trump out of the way for Warren. Warren by the way has been mum on Biden’s little ethical dilemma when he was VP and flying his son around on air force two to drum up work for his unemployed son. She is sitting back instead of going on the attack, even when asked directly by Reporters.

Why would any politician let this kind of chance to take a shot at their main rival for the Dem nomination pass?

“Elizabeth Warren became flustered when asked an ethics question that was an indirect reference to Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, serving on a Ukrainian gas company board.

The Massachusetts senator and 2020 Democrat asserted that a similar kind of behavior would not be allowed under a Warren administration, before saying that she did not know whether the situation would violate her ethics plan.

When a reporter asked Warren whether her ethics plan would allow her vice president’s son or daughter to serve on the board of a foreign company, but without directly referencing the Bidens, Warren responded “no” before quickly walking back her assertion.

“I don’t know. I mean, I’d have to go back and look at the details,” Warren said.”

Hate to break it to you pumps, but I called it long before you even found the site, not that I am keeping score. My theory was as simple as this. Young couples were moving to the city as direct result of the Great Recession and their hatred of owning after witnessing the pain caused by the housing bubble bursting. So rent, party and fukc having kids. Especially when you can’t afford them. The phenomenon of not having kids happens after every major recession. Well, wait a decade for effects to wear off. Rents rise so much that taking out a mortgage once again makes sense. The economy bounces back and people are both employed and able to save enough to have children, which requires good schools, which can only be had in the burbs. Rinse and repeat.

Hoping this is the end of Trump and Biden, would represent a huge victory for democracy if it is. Warren or Bernie will be constrained by an obstructionist minority and will likely cause a route in the 2022 midterms. If they can use those 2 years to fix some of the social safety net then this could all work out nicely. The hard left will end up disappointed with Bernie, btw, he is not an admirer of identity-based politics.

  15. The Great Pumpkin says:

    Bingo. Perfectly said.

Never underestimate the psychological impact of a recession on a demographic group. They had their life pushed back 10 years. Only a group being held back economically would willingly put off families and embrace renting. It’s extending your college lifestyle another 10 years…

I think it would be worse if a president promoted his coke addict son to the R presidental nomination via family wealth and political connections then got his brother to help win a contested election. It would be equally bad if that son’s VP was personally enriching himself off of wars started by that family.

  18. The Great Pumpkin says:

It’s no surprise there was not enough demand to push up suburban pricing earlier this decade. Who needs a home and good schools with no kids? Watch the reversal as the millennials enter the family stage…

The time to buy is before the demand comes. When people like 3b rave about how bad of an idea it is to buy a suburban home…that’s your window of opportunity. He represents the avg mindset in the market. That window is still open, but it will be closing fast. You will not be able to get current pricing 5 years from now anywhere in north jersey.

  19. The Great Pumpkin says:

Just look what this group did for cities at a stage in their life where they had no money. They helped play a vital role in the gentrification process of beat down urban neighborhoods. Now think of the impact they will have on housing when their hit their prime earning years in the not too distant future. They are going to blow the lid off current pricing in towns with good schools.

  20. Bystander says:

    Lib,

What is different this time is that suburban jobs are either gone or paying much less than a decade ago. A plethora of cheap labor options coupled with current worker desparation means they will be shocked when they realize they still need a city commute. Pop a kid or two out and now your wife better work hard and make 6 figures to afford the nanny.

  21. 3b says:

Lib I don’t doubt some Millenials are moving to the suburbs for schools once married and children come into play. I have not seen it yet in Bergen Co or at least my town. But I don’t believe it will be a tidal wave. The age of marriage is increasing the age of childbirth is increasing with the only denmograhic increasing among white women in their 40s. First time home buyer age has increased to 46!! I think that is very sobering. Buying your first house as your pushing 50 and with a couple of kids is scary IMO. As well I see lots of school age kids in Manhattan and Jersey City so not all are moving to the suburbs at least not yet. As I have said repeatedly here when you need two incomes to live today having both parents work in the city and then have to commute and day care thing every day is miserable. And many won’t do it. And the ones that do will stay as close to the city as they can like Montclair and Rutherford. They won’t be flocking to the hinterlands of Wayne.

  22. Bystander says:

I will tell my neighbor that he can expect a full 875K offer anyday from a millenial for the (new) home he paid $885k in in 2014. That millenial will get 70K of upgrades for free. Going on 5 months, no offers..I will tell him any minute. We are similiar to Wayne except better schools, better dowtown, 2 D1 universities and 4 separate beaches on LI sound. 75m commute to GC. Crickets in CT.

  23. 3b says:

I wish that moron would stop referencing me in his ramblings. He reads one article and he is off to the races.

  24. The Great Pumpkin says:

Bs. The labor market is making a huge comeback like I predicted way back in 2012/13. Your field might be f’ed, but that is not the case across the board. Look at the data: the population is higher now than 10 years ago, yet the participation rate is up, unemployment rate way down to historically low levels, and there is wage growth happening on a yearly basis of almost 4% in a low inflationary environment. Don’t apply your personal situation to the entire economy.

Do you know how much traffic there is in the morning? Keep telling me there are no jobs…where are all these people going? I have never seen it this bad in September.

  29. Bystander says:

Yes, douche..just the financial “field” in NYC. You think paying highly skilled H1B solution architect about 90K does not impact what non-technical people get paid? Dream on. It is moving out..faster each day. The argument has never been jobs but whether the incomes for those jobs are rising or falling, considering inflation stat lies and rise in overall taxation across NYC area. We have plastic bag tax (which I agree with), and now car “trade in” tax in CT last few months. Sure, they are all running to burbs because they are just like you.

  30. Libturd, seen crazy things done with ping pong balls. says:

    3b,

Nothing is 100% black or white. We all see things from our own perches. I absolutely agree that certain cities have completely changed in regards to young couples (Jersey City). I went downtown about a month ago and could hardly find any Latinos in an area that used to have abierta signs in most of the stores. There the change is certainly going to stick. But at the same time, it has gotten so expensive that this trend is now only affordable for the rich. I know, I still have a handful of JC and Hoboken friends.

My biggest concern is who is going to move into all of the active adult communities that are propping up everywhere you look?

Manufacturing and construction, dufus. Those jobs won’t buy many 750K homes with 17K tax bill in Wayne. Most non-revenue, knowledge based jobs are competing with low cost labor pool globally. I deal with the dilemma way more than you. I see the fear everyday, of people potentially losing their jobs and companies who won’t promote or reward because they know that they don’t have to do it. Price elasticity of labor supply.. look it up, dummy.

  35. 3b says:

Lib I agree. I just don’t see a massive flow of young people back to the suburbs for a variety of reasons previously discussed. I am also curious to see how the massive amount of apartment building in Bergen co will impact things. I do see older immigrant first generation families moving into the area with extended families all in same house. One I know has the husband and wife plus two kids and both sets of grandparents in a 3 bedroom 2 bath house.

You are right. I drive about 40 miles on 78 during morning and afternoon rush. The number of accidents on a very straight road with limited entrance and exits is astounding. Lately, I’ve been laying on the horn when I see people swerving and verify that they are on their smart phones. The number of people on their phones surfing while driving must be up to one in about five. I would be in support of a law that allows law officials to check the driver’s phone’s black box app (yeah, would be real easy to create) after they get into an accident. If they are found guilty of surfing while driving, then take away their license.

Same here, 78, there is always an accident near Clinton, Bedminster, or Berkeley Heights. 287, I don’t see these issues. 78 is absolutely insane. I’ve come up on some of the worst accidents on that road before the emergency personnel have gotten there. In no way would I ever consider stopping. Way too much risk.

Another take on the Repo issues.

The higher rate in the US compared to other countries combined with inverted yield curves in Europe and Japan is causing foreign Central Banks to use up US dealer reserves by putting their capital into foreign Repo facilities at US dealers like JP Morgan.

This allows foreign Central Banks to keep their exchange rates low while also taking advantage of attractive overnight interest rates in the US.

They came over very willingly to the Dems when the Clintons put “For Sale” signs on the Democratic Party, nothing said it larger than Travellers’ purchase of Citibank which was illegal because of Glass-Steagal, it kept being illegal for 1 year, until the law was changed and Sandy Weill looked like a genius.

A 3% rent cap increase might not be so bad. I have a some good tenants that have not seen an increase in many years. They take care of these long distance properties and I don’t get any calls at 2 am. I would though welcome a law that forces me to increase their rent. “I hate to do this to you, being you are such a good tenant but it is the law”

Btw if Hillary was president what would the odds be that the whistle blower dies in a plane crash while attempting to commit suicide on railroad tracks in Arkansas drinking a Starbucks coffee this weekend?

  63. leftwing says:

    “Romney looks like a god-send now…”

Dear Lord, let’s not get crazy now.

Listen, in the primaries in 2016 a majority of each Party voted for someone to come in and break the china. Trump got the Repub nomination, the Dems kept it from Bernie.

In the National election the desire was re-affirmed. No establishment. Let’s break the china.

Well, this is what breaking all the china in the cabinet looks like. And for a second don’t believe that Bernie wouldn’t have been just as crazy if he were the one elected President. Less crass and vulgar, but still batshit crazy.

Breakups are never easy. We collectively wanted to ditch our mate, the political establishment. We are in the middle of divorce proceedings which are never pretty. We do get to the other side though where things are much better.

Romney? Biden? Seriously? Why would we ditch our mate and then go running to his twin brother?

    Left,

I like the busting up part of the government. What I don’t like is the Republican agenda. Trump’s doing both. Our health care is still fcked. You can’t be anti regulation and try to regulate all women at the same time. Then there’s the whole private school thing. Which is it? Is he anti-establishment or just anti the other establishment?

And yes, this impeachment is pure politics. Like Clinton, he will not be removed. Everyone know’s that. But it will be nice to put that brand on HIS brand. Especially considering his hyper ego.

I don’t think anyone thinks anything else. And if the shoe was on the other foot, the Republican’s would be doing the same.

Both parties continue to suck balls.

Agree. And if Bernie were in he would Green, taxes, etc. Doesn’t matter who/what the transitional entity is, but that they are breaking the mold. Opens the field up for a new generation of non-establishment players. And when they arrive Red will still have Red concerns and Blue will still have Blue. But it won’t be the old guys.

“And if the shoe was on the other foot, the Republican’s would be doing the same.”

I don’t believe this. Not because the Repubs are better people. Because running impeachment on this after the major fails on Kavanaugh and Mueller is about the most stupid political move I’ve seen recently.

Dems are going into a situation they know they will lose, that will tarnish one of their Party standard bearers, that alienates rather than attracts the voters they need, after two major fails. All the while knowing that after the failed Clinton impeach the other side cleaned up in Congress, turning it Blue.

Repubs are dumb, but not that dumb.

6-8 months ago I was sure of the red wave. Pivoted to uncertain in the interim with the special elections, the shortcomings of certain specific red candidates notwithstanding.

Back to net red pickup in both houses, possibly strong, so long as the economy and market can hold gains for five more months.

No matter how well DeNiro played to the local crowd, that doesn’t play in Peoria. Especially the standing ovation.

  72. 1987 Condo says:

“Nail in the coffin”, Recession? maybe? but the article actually says this:

“Many economists expect the annual inflation rate to tick higher in coming months amid brisk growth in workers’ wages, solid consumer demand and a steep decline in borrowing costs this year. With unemployment hovering at the lowest rates in half a century, average hourly earnings for U.S. workers rose 1% in the three months through August, the biggest such gain in a decade.”

  73. The Great Pumpkin says:

Yes, but that drop off in consumer demand is huge. Maybe they come on strong the next month and this was only an anomaly, but if this happens on consecutive months, businesses will act on it if they already have not.

The economy is too strong fundamental wise to see a major recession. If the recession is here/coming, it will be quick. The millennials are coming to spend all their money and some…

  74. 1987 condo says:

Good, I just transferred about $300,000 in college and related funds to my millennial kids, hopefully they can return that to the economy.

  76. chicagofinance says:

The Clinton impeachment saga lasted six months. If it takes six months this time, it’ll wrap up just seven months before the next election. Why bother? The voters will have their say soon enough. And impeachment will eat Washington. Nothing else will get done. This should matter to Democrats, because it looked as if they might get at least some of their gun-control ideas passed into law. Not anymore. Gun control has been pushed off the back burner and disappeared behind the stove.

  77. chicagofinance says:

    Noonan:
Among Trump supporters right now, the Ukraine story would look like a Washington-centric phony drama—more partisan nonsense, business as usual, ignore it. But if the story gets bad, if it comes to be thought of as a real national-security question, as the whistleblower charged in his report, they will pay attention and care.

So much depends on who’s called to testify and what they say and how ugly a picture they paint.

Wholly anecdotal but perhaps significant, I heard this week from two separate Trump supporters, one in the past passionate, the other whose support was always softer, who shared their dismay at the Ukraine story. Both said these words: “Maybe Pence wouldn’t be so bad.” They were exhausted by the drama and wrongness. Why not the man with the soft white hair?

In the end, in purely practical political terms, the one person who will be hurt by this story will be Joe Biden. Every telling of this story necessitates pointing out that Mr. Biden’s son Hunter had cozy financial relationships with other countries, including Ukraine. It’s real swamp stuff. It looks bad, say the former vice president’s friends. No, it is bad.

It is infuriating that members of America’s leadership class so often show themselves to the world as self-enriching. As a nation we spent the 20th century presenting ourselves to the world as a truly moral leader, a self sacrificing country, one to be looked up to. In the 21st century our political figures and their families too often look like scrounging grifters—Americans with connections who can be hired, who leverage connections to fame for profit. There’s a fairly constant air of soft corruption, of an easy, seamy reality of big-power back scratching.

It makes America look bad. It makes us look weak and craven, like we can be bought.

There should be something called the Class Act. If you have any class, you don’t profit financially from a relative in power in the world’s greatest democracy. You don’t embarrass your country that way. Because, you know, you have class. You’re lucky to be from a respected family. A president or vice president might say, “It’s unfair to make my child sacrifice a deal because of what his father does!” Actually, no one asked you to ask for power; no one told you to want it. If you get it, it’s an honor. Do your job. Yes, your family should sacrifice, as should you

  78. Saturday Finances says:

    ChiFi,

You just touched on the points that if Trumps keeps pressing will win him the election if the Dems put Morass Biden. With Sanders or Warren, at least there is a clear set of ideas that they want put into law.

Keep beating China up and force more tariffs, does 2 things at a time. Iran and Saudi Arabia, we don’t need their oil anymore, let our enemy and our frenemy fight it out for the right to molest camels. The economy, well the brutal closing of the border for unskilled labor has done some good, but he’s missing the corporate prosecutions. Now if he does for skilled labor, Trump will get way more mileage for the economy.

Tell Noonan, the “Class Act” is null and void until the last of the morally and intellectually bankrupt boomer locust in government or corporate power is dead and cremated (don’t trust buried with this jerks)

A prime example is you can draw a straight line between the way the immigrant border crossing kids are treated and Bill Clinton/Newt Gringrich ‘s welfare reform (both great models of intellectual and moral bankruptcy).

Up until that point the chattering ideologues talked about it, but no one did anything because they knew they would heart kids. It took these 2 shining examples of boomer generations to start the ball rolling.

When the truth comes out about the kids & ICE care. It’s going to make the Catholic Church and the Boys Scout look good in comparison.

A good part of my opinion on the partisan matters is formed by a sister and BIL in TN, a niece and husband in OH, and another direct family member in MI.

They’re generally a pretty good barometer. Got three-fer on impeachment, basically the AYFKM in the Post article. Significant because OH and MI are millennials and leftward leaning.
