Ukraine Day 7

Another message from Alex in Kyiv (who is a friend from the international distilling community btw):

Some news for today, the 7th day of the war.

We have our pilot heroes. One of them was nicknamed “The Ghost of Kyiv”. He was hit. But the pilot escaped, returned to the base, received a new plane and already destroyed 21 Russian planes on it!
Glory to the Hero! To all heroes!
He flies a MiG-29 Fulcrum
(After the collapse of the USSR, Soviet aircraft also remained in Ukraine, but they were heavily modernized by our engineers and scientists.)

The total combat losses of the Russians from 24.02 to 03.03 tentatively amounted to:
personnel – about 9,000 people (dead and wounded),
tanks – 217 units,
BBM – 900 units,
artillery systems – 90,
MLRS – 42,
air defense systems – 11,
aircraft – 30 units (information to be confirmed),
helicopters – 31 units (information is being specified);
automotive equipment – 374,
light speedboats – 2 units,
tanks with PPM – 60,
UAV operational-tactical level – 3,
The data is being specified. Counting is complicated by the high intensity of hostilities.

Circus: in Energodar, the invaders asked to be let into the city and allowed to be photographed against the background of the nuclear power plant for reports to their military leadership.

In Energodar, Zaporozhye region,  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enerhodar

people did not let the invaders into the city near the nuclear power plant. Ordinary people became a wall against tanks (see photo).

The Russians turned to the station management with a request to give them the opportunity to take a photo for the report against the backdrop of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. The invaders come out and try to negotiate with the leadership of the city of Energodar.
“They say that it is enough for them to enter the city at least a little, take a picture against the backdrop of the nuclear power plant and send a report to the management,” Kotin said.

Now it becomes clear why the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is talking about the captured strategic facilities and cities.

Some information for now:

1) Ukrainian troops went on the counter-offensive and liberates the cities captured by the Russians near Kiev, including the city of Makarov, Bucha (Kyiv region). Kharkov, the environs of Kharkov – the counter offensive of the Ukrainian army. the city of Gorlovka is liberated from the Russian invaders.
In addition, another Russian convoy burned down in the village of Moskovsky Bobrik, Sumy region, not far from the Poltava region.

2) Ukrainian intelligence received information that part of the Russian “grad” missile systems located on the border with Russia were deployed towards the nearest Russian villages. This is done in order to bombard their cities (Russian cities with Russian weapons) in order to create a “TV picture” that Ukraine is attacking peaceful Russian villages on the border.
I have no words…
Even the Nazis did not commit such crimes in 1941-1945!

3) I am in Kyiv now, we are already used to constant explosions in the sky … This is our air defense system (and missile defense). We asked NATO to “close the sky”! but NATO is afraid of the Russians and does not help in this matter. We need air defense systems that can intercept missiles. We have our own developments, but they are few in comparison with the number of Russian Typhoon and Iskander installations. We hold on, many missiles manage to intercept in the sky.
Kyiv is an impregnable fortress now.

4) We are fighting in such a way that the invaders were forced to change their tactics. Russian missile and bomb strikes on Ukrainian cities is an admission that Russia has not been able to do anything significant militarily. All lines of our defense have been preserved, and the enemy is not successful in any of the strategic directions. They (the Russian military) are suppressed, they are doomed.

5) Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba called on partners to close the airspace over Ukraine, otherwise the blood of Ukrainians killed by Russia will also be on their hands.
Kuleba said this on the joint air of Ukrainian TV channels “We are strong together”, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“We say very clearly and calmly to our partners in NATO that you can think as much as you like how you could avoid a direct confrontation with Russia, but if you do not help us stop it now, then a direct confrontation will be inevitable, because you will be next.” Kuleba said.

In this context, he noted that those who believe that Russia will not dare to attack NATO countries should remember that they also did not believe in the Kremlin’s plans to start a direct war with Ukraine.

“And everyone was wrong. Therefore, we need to act right now,” the head of Ukrainian diplomacy stressed.

He emphasized that the topic of closing the sky over Ukraine is extremely relevant, and there are different scenarios. For example, it is possible to close not all airspace, but part of it, it is possible not to close the sky, but to ensure the supply of combat aircraft and anti-aircraft defense systems of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“All scenarios are currently in the works. But everyone should understand, and we clearly say this to our partners: “We are grateful to you for everything you have done… But now there is a concrete threat that our citizens will continue to be killed from the air… Therefore, if you do not take radical steps to strengthen the air defense defense of Ukraine, then the blood of our dead citizens will be on your hands. Your restraint and your unwillingness to take the next steps – all this gives Russia the opportunity to continue to commit murders with impunity,” the Foreign Minister stressed.

Pray for us if you believe in God.
Help us in any way you can.

If earlier I wrote that we want to win, today I can write, and it’s true that we are winning!
We Win on the battlefield the most powerful (by number) army in the world! (Army of Russia).
We won’t give up!

  3. grim says:

Some interesting comments in there, like everything right now, they need a grain of salt, but two things stand out.

Russian troops working hard for photo ops for propaganda. This explains some of the half-ass attempts to take cities, without enough troops to actually hold them. However, it’s enough to get a photo.

Russian bombing of Russian villages – if true, again, purely for propaganda reasons, trying to build more support internally.

Layer this into the nearly complete cutoff of western media in Russia.

  4. grim says:

Heard an interesting theory about the “massive convoy” – and specifically why it wasn’t being targeted – at least the very high value targets in it (anti-aircraft and rocket systems). Goes back to one of the Sun Tzu sayings – give your enemy a golden bridge to retreat on. Putin can still save face pulling the massive convoy back and not risk being further humiliated – which would cause even more scorched earth. Every day that goes on, it represents even less of a threat, as they burn through supplies and morale.

If there are actually people in those unarmored personnel carriers – they’ve been sitting in the back of a truck, in completely freezing weather, for 4 days now. Lack of sleep, lack of food, lack of any real comfort, it’s got to be f*cking miserable. This is on top of the time they spent in Belarus, likely in similarly miserable conditions.

  5. Juice Box says:

Reports now say some Russian troops are now on day four of not eating, and they are even raiding stores and begging the locals for food. I would assume they are drinking whatever water they can get from snow or other supplies.

If true many are going and fighting with little food their bodies have burned through most of any stored glycogen, and they all must now feel lethargic and exhausted, and should be losing any will to fight.

There are supposed to be 100,000 of them now in Ukraine. Must all be cold, wet, hungry and most likely demoralized because the Ukrainians have killed 9,000 and injured who knows how many. Seems the Ukrainians just blew up that supply convoy too at the airport north of Kiev.

Wow, Sabre cuts Aeroflot off. Anyone that knows the travel business knows how critical Sabre is, and how hard it will be to replace their reservations system. Aeroflot is completely dead in Russia right now. I’m sure they’ll figure something out, but damn this is a good one. Even Russian allied countries still allowing flights are going to have major issues.

  7. Libturd says:

I’m not sure who I feel worse for. The average Ukrainian or the average Russian?

  8. grim says:

Both, it sucks and should have never happened, or been allowed to happen.

  9. BRT says:

Lib, I’ve only spoken to one but she’s beside herself. She’s Russian, her mother is Russian, father is from Belarus. She has aunts and cousins in Ukraine. They are all upset and are very conflicted because many of them view themselves as one people.

  10. Libturd says:

Agreed, Grim. I know it seems like I am playing Monday morning quarterback a lot, but it appears the ability of politicians to think and act proactively, is long gone. Whether it be the handling of the Pandemic, terrorism, war, and even with this inflation which is about to worsen.

How is it that the respected posters here can be right so frequently, yet the government’s answer is, “How were we supposed to know?”

  11. grim says:

Yeah, tough to predict the actions of madmen.

Though – I wonder now what the repercussions will be for India. Their abstention from the UN vote against Russia yesterday is causing a lot of concern. They continue to try to tap-dance to maintain their Russian relations. Unfortunately, it’s time to choose. India’s actions will not reflect well in the eyes of the global community. We’re long past the point of desiring to remain neutral. Hell, even Switzerland realized that was geopolitical suicide.

I understand their allyship with Russia is one of necessity as opposed to desire, given the regional geopolitics, but we’re in a situation where history is being written, and it won’t be kind. This will surely chill long-term business relations between India and the rest of the world.

The worse Putin acts, the worse India looks. Losing a major ally in Asia would be a major blow to Putin, one that could have potentially changed the course early on, so even if India shifts gears at some point in the near future, it won’t reflect well.

They are really in a difficult position. Russia knows this, thus the massive propaganda about Indian students being stopped at the border, beaten, left behind, etc. They are desperately trying to keep the support of India.

  12. Libturd says:

I would expect India will turn when the West is willing to provide them protections of sorts as well as make up the goods Russia provided them in trades.

  13. grim says:

Suspect it has more to do with keeping Pakistan contained than the arms trade.

  14. Fast Eddie says:

  15. grim says:

I want the financial and banking industry to ramp up the outsourcing! /Sarcasm off.

Good luck with that now, Ukraine had a huge population of offshore development talent.

So did Belarus and Russia, which combined means something like 100k very, very talented offshore contractors are not currently working.

Good luck if you were in the middle of a large-scale project. India was already strapped for talent.

Expect offshore dev talent prices to jump significantly in the next few months. If you are a little fish, good luck, you’ll see resources pulled off your projects to backfill for major clients.

It’s sad to see how blinkered and insular you’ve become. I hope you find some optimism and strength in your efforts to get back on track.

  19. Fast Eddie says:

So, we won’t pump any more oil here because it will anger the climate justice warriors at home but we’re asking OPEC to pump more oil. Does OPEC live on a different planet?

Also, President Brandon ordered companies to LOWER THEIR COSTS in order to battle inflation. Did he just ask companies to reduce their head count by firing people? Does he realize the price of resources has quadrupled in order to produce a product?

  20. Libturd says:

    Doesn’t matter now Eddie.

The recession is coming regardless. You can blame it on Brandon, but really, this level of inflation requires a bipartisan effort. Don’t get me wrong here. He’s been a terrible president, much like his predecessor. Though fear not. If things don’t change soon (and they most certainly won’t), the Neanderthals are going to have control of everything. I can’t wait to see the world return to a place where only the rich white Christian has a place and the Mexicans will pay for it.

Sorry, I was busy getting beat up by some MDs because we can’t deliver a damn thing of value. The wheels coming off. You will never sell me that Agile teams across multiple regions, with limited product ownership, can be successful. Not at this IB anyway. It is monkey play, pretending to care about delivery when they won’t invest in people or training while also taking on every flimsy CTO initiative for data sourcing and Cloud alignment. Business does not care at all. They want a working app.

India? Nothing changes Ed. Cheap labor will always win. Our global executive board does not care about geo-politics (sure, we will send thoughts) as long as it does not impact their short-term value.

  23. Fast Eddie says:

    Bystander,

But are you buying-in to your teams core competencies to empower their corporate values as they utilize synergies in a scalable fashion to instill best practices while thinking outside the box, giving 110%, acting in the most transparent fashion possible? After all, it is what it is!

Can you just accept the same issues are not squarely D or R? Printing money, low energy prices, Made in America, immigration reform – those are same items been listening to for generations. It is ain’t happening. Corps don’t want it.

Fun times and the joys of home ownership.

My Cuisinart coffee maker is on the fritz and leaking water, not coffee. Took the bottom cover off and found a pinhole in the aluminum heating element that squirts a little bit of water when the pump cycles while brewing. Don’t know how it developed a pin hole in the aluminum, must be the acid in the coffee? Anyway cannot get the part. I am considering brazing it with a torch, well because I am cheap after all, will have to pull it out as to not melt the plastic, so not really sure if it will survive my attempt to MacGyver it.

Any good recommendation on a new brewer? I really don’t want another Cuisinart as well you cannot get the parts. 10 – 12 cup grind/brew unit with a metal insulated carafe so the coffee does not burn like it does with glass.

If you’re grinding anyway french press?

  41. Bystander says:

    Juice

Can’t just put some Jweld putty to seal small hole? I use that stuff on pool and even small leak on my AC pipe.

  42. Libturd says:

I’m sold on my Cuisinart Brew Central. Ours is at least 15 years old and still going strong. It brews pretty hot too, is fast and easy to clean and descale and has the charcoal filter. I’ve had a lot of different branded drip coffee makers and they all suck. Trust me. Shame yours broke.

Speaking of mods. This was by far the best one I ever did. Batteries last forever and the power is insane.

    https://www.radiocarbonart.com/blog/dust-buster-turbo-boost-lipo-battery-hack/

I did it to a 20 year old model about 5 years ago. Batteries still running strong. I only need to plug it in about once every two months.

  43. Juice Box says:

Bystander – re: JB Weld. Well it is a heating element, it might smell. Saw online someone else used JB Weld for the exact same issue same model, they said it smelled and then lasted only about a year, before it leaked again.

I have a torch and all kinds of brazing rods, much more effective, and only need to hit it with a tiny bit as it is only a pin hole. Found directions to remove the element, it’s only two screws, and wires, plus no need to solder since I am not taking it complexly apart. I don’t think I will melt the wires. I actually have it apart now, just going to give it a quick shot with the torch. I can test the leak easy peasy with my air compressor too before I put it back.

As far as French press, have one, but really don’t use it much. I would rather set and forget the coffee maker at night. My wife is up at 5 AM on days she heads into the city. I am up usually 6 AM and really don’t want to bother pressing coffee early as I need to get kids up and on two different school buses starting at 7AM.

  44. Grim says:

There isn’t any marking on the part? Usually these heating element parts are shared across dozens of models and makers.

  53. The Great Pumpkin says:

That’s what a lot of companies are complaining about right now in this remote environment. You spend all this time and money training them and upgrading their skills and then they immediately jump ship for more money.

This is def going to take a toll on tech growth companies. How do you complete projects with people jumping ship before projects are done. You bring a new guy on and you have to train him, but then he jumps ship before the project is done. Just another thing that is going to hurt the economy. Not going to see the innovation happening as rapidly as in the past. Plus, most workers are all about themselves now, they could care less about the company…hence, bye bye culture which is everything.

That’s why it’s inevitable that companies are going to want in-person. Remote is f/ing them in the ass. People jump ship way too fast with remote.

On the battlefield, Russia continues advancing slowly. Advancing, even if much slower than most would have thought before this war started. An amphibious assault may be launched on Odessa. The Ukranians are estimating that the Russians have 9,000 soliders killed or wounded already – that many in one week of the war.

I don’t think that demand even makes sense – how can he expect to get stroked and deep throated at the same time? Furthermore, tonsils are kind of shallow in the throat, not very deep. And what’s the deal with having a drink throughout?
Seems like someone from Harvard and the Marines should know enough to stay out of a honey trap like that, but he’s probably a typical Harvard politician narcissist who thinks everyone worships him.

How come when I use a call service for help with a company product it’s a complete waste of time? How come you have banks that offer a financial service that ends up costing the customer big time? Why? I can go on and on. Are there bad teachers? Sure. Are there teachers good teachers? Sure. It’s just like pro sports. Some players are good and some are bad, yet they are all pro’s. Give it a rest with your hate for teachers. It’s more annoying than my WFH talk, but you just don’t see it.

You have this mindset because you’re surrounded by incompetent folks who are just in it for the tenure and pension. Join pus in the trenches of capitalism where people realize they need to get sht done, and I think you’d have a different reaction

  71. 3b says:

Pumps. Once again you know absolutely nothing. Your last post is completely incoherent. Just admit why you are hostile to WFH/ hybrid and stop the nonsense, or better yet just don’t comment on a topic you clearly know nothing about.

  72. The Great Pumpkin says:

Okay, let me clarify this for you. If remote is the norm, and you are indeed correct, why doesn’t the stock price reflect it? In simple words, this has no impact on me.

You keep going on and on that real estate is dead, dream the f/k on.

“So keep telling us how remote work/ hybrid has no impact on you while at the same time raging against it and stating companies are getting fecked in the ass; such an ignorant comment.”

Here is one Blumpy from today:

-Recruiter reaches out to me 10 days ago on LinkedIn “title: Need help. Are you in market?”. He gives no details other than looking for Sr. data governance PM and wondering if I am interested
-My reply: Thanks for the reply. I may be interested but can provide more details and if FT or contract?
-He does not reply, until today and sends me calendly link with pdf overview of role and his company. He works for search firm and trying to fill a role for Fitch but his firm requires:
    1. First round with recruiter (normal)
    2. 1st Meeting with Fitch to see if interest (normal)
    3. Next Round, in person, in Chicago with his company to be interviewed by their team (ok wtf)
    4. 60 m skill assessment with a f-ing internal Z brain score to see if meet their standards (f-you)
    5. If I pass 3 and 4 then I go back to client for 2nd round.
    6. If 5 then back to Chicago for final round with their team after client feedback
    7. Might offer who knows

All in pdf. Seriously, I bet salary is not up to snuff and probably not hybrid.

My final reply: I am only looking at hybrid work schedule in XXX salary range. Happy to discuss if this mutually works.

I hope they pass this, so we can use it as a case study on why they are full of sh!t. Those students will perform the same in those districts (prob even worse as they realize they are well behind their peers and don’t have to the work ethic to keep up). So I can’t wait till they try this experiment so they can for once stop blaming the teachers and instead acknowledge the work ethic of said students.

Pumps: You are deflecting again. I gave you the latest from Forbes and you dismiss it. I have not said anything about real estate in ages. Yet, you bring that up to deflect. What stock are you talking about Zoom? Why is it going down ? I don’t know the particulars, but I would assume saturation might be part of it , where the does the stock go from here. You of course assume it went down because everyone will go back to the office and Zoom will become the equivalent of the 8 track player. That’s not happening, and by the way Zoom is used in offices as well obviously you didn’t know that and who would expect you to as you are not in corporate America. As for your call center example that you trot out as evidence of incompetent corporate employees and WFH slackers aren’t they just as bad when they are in the office? Or are they bad when they are in the office and really bad when they WFH.

Yet another example of the incoherence and incompetence of the Biden admin — refusing to ban oil imports from Russia (ensuring Putin enough income to continue funding his war), but choking energy production here at home. The rationale….

    re: madman.

I am going to disagree. He is probably a drug addict. Just like many of our now dead but famous and rich celebrities.

Putin apparently wakes up at noon and has a quail egg omelet and then swims is his lap pool before “work”. Apparently he has the cosmonauts on the ISS attempting to grow quail eggs in space.

Hitler was a drug addict too, he was continually given varieties of injections and pills along with their army, it’s well documented. Many times the rich and powerful destroy themselves with drugs.

Here’s the thing, I’m not buying into the trend. This is a trend due to two factors: 1. Pandemic 2. Anomaly in the labor market. Once the labor market returns to the mean, workers aren’t going to be calling the shots, the owners will. It’s always been this way long-term.

Two recruiters reached out to me about changing jobs. Both positions, management and potentially above, are either full time remote or 1 or 2 days remote. Not even bargaining to lure me in, flatly stating this is how it is. Both are moving offices to cheaper locations and are using hot desk / flex arrangements for staff who want to go in still. I am still firmly in the “want to be in the office” camp, but I may not have that option going forward. Even with Covid winding down, remote work is gaining ground fast in my industry.
