Cheaper to live in NJ? Yeah, right.

From the Star Ledger:

Murphy unveils plan for big property tax rebates to nearly 2M N.J. households

Gov. Phil Murphy announced Thursday his administration will extend property tax relief to about 1.8 million New Jersey households by replacing the state’s Homestead Benefit program.

The tax relief initiative is part of the governor’s state budget proposal he is set to unveil during a speech at the Statehouse in Trenton on Tuesday.

Under the new program, New Jersey homeowners making up to $250,000 would be eligible to receive an average $700 rebate in the first year, and renters making up to $100,000 would be eligible for a rebate up to $250 to help offset the cost of rent increases due to property taxes.

“We want this to mean lasting relief that keeps families in their homes,” Murphy said while announcing the plans during an event at Fair Lawn’s municipal building.

The Democratic governor stressed this would apply to about 1.15 million homeowners and 600,000 renters. Rebates for homeowners would appear as a credit on property tax bills, and payments to renters would be made by check or direct deposit.

“We don’t want property taxes to force families out of great communities like this,” Murphy said of Fair Lawn, a Bergen County suburb where the average property tax bill hit $11,527 in 2021.

Murphy said his administration plans to ramp up the program over a three-year period, and the state investment would swell to $1.5 billion annually, bringing the average rebate per eligible household to $1,150 by 2025.

And just when you think it can’t get any worse under this O’Biden administration, why do I fear that something larger can happen at any moment? Hearing chatter about suspending Russian visas in US and requiring all Russian nationals to return home immediately.

What a dumb idea. First off, we absolutely need the support of the Russian people, and Russians in America are not only part of that, but a critical part of the information flow back into Russia. At this point, the most probable end-game for the war in Ukraine is one that’s driven by the Russian people.

We should be going the exact other way. Biden needs to be speaking out in support of the Russian people, protesters, in a very positive way. All the EU leaders need to be. Biden needs to be seen working with Russian community leaders across the country.

There are 2.5 million Russian Americans, almost 500k of them born in Russia.

Even better, build coalition between Ukrainians and Russians in the US – real brotherhood, not Putin’s f*cked up idea. This is Putin’s war, not Russia’s.

Suspect this humanitarian corridor is going to get completely f*cked up, due to Russia’s lack of communication/coordination with troops deep in Ukraine. Most of these guys don’t have radios, or good enough radios to cover any real distance. Plus, they are now so fragmented, so even if a group did have radio at one time, it’s not going to help.

    Economic Worries Mount in China
More than two years into the pandemic, China has a problem: It can’t convince its people to spend more money. From canceled vacation trips to cutting back on dining out, Chinese consumers have remained cautious, refusing to spend like Westerners during the Covid-19 era. Now that is becoming a bigger worry for Beijing, which is trying to reignite growth at a time of rising economic uncertainty due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and global inflationary pressures. Chinese leaders are widely expected at annual parliamentary meetings starting this week to unveil measures to stimulate more spending. Authorities have also recently eased credit conditions, including making it cheaper for companies and families to obtain loans. Those steps and potentially more will likely be needed if China is to achieve an expected growth target of 5% or more this year, Stella Yifan Xie reports.

I just check returning flights home to Russia. Seems there is little demand, Newark to Moscow connecting in Paris, then Turkey is $426 one way. From here you would need to connect via Turkey or Dubai to get there.

Air Travel already is expensive but with $100 a barrel oil and well flights to Asia now can no longer go over Russia, it adds as much as two hours to the flight to go around burning allot of extra fuel. New Path is to fly south over North Africa and the Middle East to get to India or other parts in Asia.

I asked at my company who makes the decisions as to which options are available in our 401K. It was HR 20 years ago. This was changed after my urging and now it’s a group that consists of a mix of executives that are very knowledgeable and astute investors. Our fund choices changed from every Morningstar 5-star rated (might max at 4, but it’s garbage any way) fund in each popular category to a variety of lower cost funds that might not have been the best performers in the past couple of years. Suddenly, most of the funds actually beat or matched their underlying benchmarks rather than reverting to mean and underperforming them. They continue to change and increase our options. It’s clear we have smarter people, concerned about their own huge 401Ks, making these decisions for us. I used to b1tch and moan constantly about not being able to choose where to invest my own 401K. Now that I have smart options available, I’m cool with it. You might want to look into how your pension is invested. I guarantee it’s run by either a bunch of non-experienced appointees loyal to the union. Or dumb volunteers, like kindergarten teachers. Why don’t you find out?

Murphy property tax rebate thing . . .

NJ State Govt annual spending is something like $35B.
Statewide primary annual school spending is something like $16B.
I don’t know off-hand what is spent on muni services and county services, so I will just estimate that each is about equal to school spending, so muni and county together are about annual spending of $32B.

Off-hand (if someone feels like looking it up, please correct me!), these numbers mean that the State, County, Muni, and School Board spending in NJ is around $83B. That’s annual spending, not accounting for the huge unfunded future liabilities in the govt worker pension and healthcare plans.

If this number hits $90B, then NJ would be spending $10,000 per year per NJ resident. $10k! NJ is currently knocking on the door of spending $10k per resident per year on state and local services. $40k for a family of four.

Murphy is collecting or borrowing $10k per resident each year and handing back $750 per household (so, that could easily be $250 per person or less). So, it’s robbing Peter to pay Paul, and then taking money out of Paul’s pocket with the Gov’s right hand and handing him some of his own money back with the Gov’s left hand.

Russia gained a lot of territory in the South and East yesterday, even as the Kiev front remained mostly unchanged.

Could be massive propaganda or misinformation, but there is a Russian battle plan circulating around which was allegedly retrieved from a dead or captured Russian officer that identifies the initial assault as being a 15-day campaign. So, even if it takes Putin 30 or 45 days to conquer all of Ukraine, then it is conceivable that that would still be within the Russian military’s “worse case” contingency planning for the initial subjugation of the country. Further, I’m reading more content that identifies the “Russian military doctrine” as being accepting of much-higher casualties than US military doctrine. Thus, until this gets to about 45 days and I don’t know how eye-wateringly high in Russian soldier casualties, it’s hard to say that the Russian military committed a military blunder. Geopolitically, economically, from a war crimes perspective, and in terms of Putin’s hold on Russian power – yes, seems already like a blunder by Putin. Obviously, from a humanitarian persepctive, this is all horrible beyond any individual’s comprehension.

Juice, thank you for posting the pension fund report.

NJ and I suppose many state pension funds are invested in a lot of nonsense. Lots of high fee allocations to private equity and other alternatives. It’d likely be impossible to muster the political will to do this, but I would prefer if their investment strategy was just allocating over VTI, VXUS and BND. Haha, wall street would revolt.

If I was reading the report correctly, $1.5B net was taken out (inflows of funds versus outflows, not counting investment return) of the $100B fund in 2021. Would be interesting to know what the peak projected yearly outflow will be: $3B? $4B? I’d imagine there is a near-term peak because more-recent hires have a higher pay-in and reduced pay-out.

We then put sanctions on India consisted of cutting off all assistance to India except humanitarian aid. The have refused to sign and join the Nuke Non-Proliferation treaty only one a few countries to not sign it. India, Israel, Pakistan, and South Sudan.

Also of note India’s navy is powered by Russian nuclear reactors, they are building a small fleet of nuclear submarines with nuke missile launchers and they are also built with high grade Russian steel. Very few countries can make the steel used in nuke subs that can withstand 80,000 PSI.

So will the US support their nuclear ambitions like the Russians? NOPE…

News says Russian soldier are being offered money already, to both turn over their tanks and surrender. Problem is getting the message to them. They are not allowed to have smartphones and well even if they did apparently Ukraine cut off their access to the cellular networks there.

  70. JCer says:

On Ukraine,I don’t think the Russians don’t intend to stay, it seems Yanukovich will be coming back or someone in that ilk, and I expect the next action would be joining Russia’s security bloc. I suspect they will consolidate around the black sea and annex that Russia, Ukraine can have nominal freedom as long as they do not host western military. This conflict is just further supporting Putin’s view of the world, he knows his military is hopelessly outclassed by NATO and that the US has many levers to use against Russia, and sitting US Senators are calling for his assignation. The power imbalance is so severe the US can largely dictate internal Russian politics. I think Putin realizes this and unless he can regain control is toast in the 2024 election, my suspicion is was about retaining power, if he can outfox the west and achieve his goals he can bolster his domestic support. If you saw his speech he looks very good compared to the crackpots we have in the west.

I’ll leave all of the best/worst commentary to the tds people but trump years had record increases in disposable income. It lifted all ships.

Inflation outpaced wage growth by 2.4 last year. I’m sure it was a great year for lobbyists however.

  73. Fast Eddie says:

I get it. You’re resentful because your ideals are failures and Trump had a long list of successes as president. If you had to list O’Biden’s achievements, what would they be?

Re: tax rebates…”So, it’s robbing Peter to pay Paul, and then taking money out of Paul’s pocket with the Gov’s right hand and handing him some of his own money back with the Gov’s left hand.”

Don’t forget all that reallocation of our/your money come with a massive vig off the top of more government employees (salaries, bennies) to actually take and redistribute your money among yourselves. Neat trick actually….give me $10k, I’ll give you $750 back, and I’ll employ someone I know to do it and pay them out of your $10k.

  76. Bystander says:

All boats, his big Orange rear..my pay went down under Trump. I got no raise in 2018 after tax cut, RIFed by bank (not unexpected as 800 let go over years) searched 5 months to find another job then took about 10% pay cut. No raises in 2019-2021. Last month, I got 5% raise and biggest bonus since I joined. Thanks Joe.

  80. Bystander says:

Could you imagine if Biden called Putin ‘a genius’ and ‘savvy’ and generally s*cked his c*ck during his presidency. Run him again, red hat mooks…he won’t catch people by surprise in 2024. Lots to answer for when coward tries to re-enter. He won’t be able to just hang up on NPR.

They said they think it’s Russia; I have President Putin, he just said it’s not Russia,” Trump told reporters. “I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be. I have great confidence in my intelligence people, but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today.”

  81. Fast Eddie says:

    GOAT,

My head spins imagining the inferno coming from the media if Trump fucked up virtually everything that occurred on slo jo’s watch. It’s amazing that brandon has absolutely nothing to demonstrate as a success. His speech the other night contained nothing. It was so bad, even his toadies were disappointed. It was a laundry list, a campaign speech, contained 40 year old barbs aimed at the right and out loud laughable suggestions combatting the nation’s ills. Cry or laugh, both are fitting.

  82. BidenIsTheGOAT says:

At best, it’s disputed. The rationale and evidence for Russia intervening on trumps behalf is convoluted.

NPR is propaganda. An enemy of the constitution. I not only would hang up on them I would defund and dissolve it.

  83. leftwing says:

As I’ve stated previously I’ve not been a registered member of either party, despise both, and think (even before he was elected) DJT was a hot mess…..

So coming from no bias…..it is truly amazing how Biden fucks up everything he touches.

I guess it was predictable…his entire career and adult life was being one of 100, and the only real qualifications during that time to remain a member in good standing of that club was the ability to backslap and be not objectionable. Never led anything, for even one day of his adult life. Blends in with the wallpaper for 50 years and gets rewarded with the Oval Office. LOL, this country is a joke.

  84. Bystander says:

My head spins thinking that a man who was a D and manipulated the media for 30 years to build his brand was suddenly the victim of it during his R Presidency. You can’t fix dumb and gullible with the cult.

  85. Bystander says:

Oh GOAT..don’t forget follow-up. Anything else I can point out since memory is so bad

“I accept our intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election took place,” Trump said. But diverting from his typewritten notes, the President added: “It could be other people also. A lot of people out there.”

  86. Bystander says:

Anything else? Now his VP, AG and everyone else comes out against him except young rabies infested idiots like DeSantis, Lauren Bobblehead and Marjorie Adolph Greene looking ride the crazy train for cult votes:

Former Vice President Mike Pence will urge Republicans to move on from the 2020 election, declaring “there is no room in this party for apologists for Putin” as he further cements his break from former President Donald Trump.

We just posted reports that the ceasefire was not holding at the end of the evacuation route out of Mariupol.

We are now hearing the city itself is still under shelling.

“The Russians are continuing to bomb us and use artillery. It is crazy,” Mariupol deputy mayor Serhiy Orlov told the BBC.

“There is no ceasefire in Mariupol and there is no ceasefire all along the route. Our civilians are ready to escape but they cannot escape under shelling.”
