Uh oh

From CNBC:

Inflation increased 0.4% in September, more than expected despite rate hikes

Prices consumers pay for a wide variety of goods and services rose more than expected in September as inflation pressures continued to weigh on the U.S. economy.

The consumer price index for the month increased 0.4% for the month, more than the 0.3% Dow Jones estimate, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. On a 12-month basis, so-called headline inflation was up 8.2%, off its peak around 9% in June but still hovering near the highest levels since the early 1980s.

Excluding volatile food and energy prices, core CPI accelerated 0.6% against the Dow Jones estimate for a 0.4% increase. Core inflation was up 6.6% from a year ago.

The report rattled financial markets, with stock market futures plunging and Treasury yields moving up.

“Today will be the worst market day since the subprime debacle. Lefty, you are about to get paid.”

Not sure about either statement lol…I am net long don’t forget (small portion of portfolio)…My worst returning VIX position (naked) is down 0.6%, less than a third of market with better risk/reward profile…my SPY hedges (two) are saving me some pain, basically offsetting half of losses there…for chi, with the continuing declines of the index my hedge delta has popped and now near max gamma on one…

META, GOOG, etc if the market wants to hand me shares at my option write prices I’m good with that…I’m marking losses but I’ll take META at 90 all day long…and in that regard on the SPYs even though I am marking losses now the position at expiration is breakeven between 300 and 370ish…The market wants to hand me SPY at 300 – which saves me the pain of more than 20% down on the ride there – I’m pretty cool with that…..

I am encouraged by VIX behavior…spot is actually down….think we’ll bounce later based on that alone….to our prior conversation, not gambling, but an indication of the market view on uncertainty…although CPI sucked and market is down, VIX is coming in because that piece of uncertainty was removed from the market….just need banks and Brits to comply tomorrow….

So I was poised for a bounce, account was down 4k before hours. Crazy thing was, I was looking at ES chart and the ES chart was lagging so I only saw green candle, not giant red candle. Wasn’t making sense until I refreshed the browser. I basically exited green after the relief rally today. I’m gonna sit this one out and ponder better short entry.

  12. leftwing says:

Haha, NoOne, seeing a bounce three hours after the oversold this morning is a lot easier for me than seeing where we’ll be in three weeks…

You could exit the VIX puts at 4.50 on the bid right now, up 0.35-0.40 or 8% if anyone’s in…If you are be careful overnight, two major volatility events tomorrow…plus given the expiries here you want to be out in a week…to chi’s points this is an option, not future, and will lose value just sitting there…

All I ever heard of Biden prior to last election was that he served as Obama’s VP since Obama lacked any foreign policy experience. Biden had chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and had a lot of tenure. What he did all of those years, is beyond me. I do know about his lie about his helicopter having been shot down over Afghanistan(?) when it actually had to emergency land due to mechanical failure.

  45. No One says:

    Libturd,
I got a pretty good idea of Trump’s treatment of people when he trashed every single opponent in the Republican contests, from “little Marco Rubio” to spreading claims that Ted Cruz’ dad killed JFK. It’s basically a continuation of his wrestling video where he hits someone with a chair. His core political base is people who think both wrestling and religious myths are real. “I love the poorly educated” he said in a speech.

On the other hand, I know some smarter people who embraced Trump because he’s an attacker. Particularly those who saw Romney sit there without fighting back when the Dems and their media lackeys tag-team DP’d him. But there’s a massive difference between vigorously but rationally arguing personal convictions versus Trump, the narcissist who just personally attacks everyone and everything – except “strong” leaders like Putin and Xi and Kim who he enjoyed talking to.

“…maybe they [anti abortion] can spin off into a theocratic party.”

Surely there’s got to be a reasonable middle ground between ‘anything goes’ and theocracy. In any case, it’ll be interesting to see if this is a game-change issue in a purple state like PA where the Dems are running a senate candidate that’s actually less mentally fit than Biden. Not that I want to see Frankenstein Futterman win, but I’d love to be a fly on the wall if he and SlowJoe were to ever have a conversation — comedy gold!

  47. No One says:

Biden is pretty ordinary. A dumb, corrupt politician who is over the hill, like a lot of folks in congress. His unique stroke of luck is that after stubbornly pursuing several failed presidential campaigns, the Dems decided he had weakened into the perfect decaying political corpse which they could reanimate according to their desires.
I’d love to see Fetterman and Biden live on stage together required to answer actual questions. Genuinely mentally impaired people who get away with mouthing a few canned leftist slogans that supposedly appeal to “the common man”. Compared to them, AOC is a genius, though wrong in the same way.

If both sides of the political can seem to agree that Biden isn’t really in charge . . . Who the heck is?

    -Obama by telephone?
    -the CIA director?
-is every federal department just getting way more autonomy than under other presidents?

Like, Clinton was famous for supposedly staying up til 3 AM when necessary to just speak directly with foreign leaders during business hours in their time zone. GWB, not so much. Obama, being a young man when he was POTUS, I would believe it if you told me his normal schedule was 16+ hours a day on a normal day, and maybe still 4 or 5 hours when he was on vacation. Trump, like him or hate him, I can picture him hearing a briefing and barking directions well after sunset.

The stakes are high for Durham, who has taken on an unprecedented role in this trial by personally handling most arguments and questioning so far. His inquiry is winding down after more than three years, and he has only secured one guilty plea from an FBI lawyer that resulted in zero jail time. His only other case, against a Hillary Clinton campaign lawyer, ended with a swift jury acquittal in May.”

“I had no real involvement in the preparation of the Statement of Financial Condition and don’t really remember ever working on it with anyone,” Trump Jr. said. “Again, people may have asked me about stuff tangentially that I gave them an answer to that they may have then utilized as a basis of knowledge to come up with whatever, but, no, not specifically as it relates to, you know, knowledge about the financial statement,” he added.

He said his knowledge of US accounting rules, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, is limited to what he learned from an “Accounting 101” college course.
