‘Working remotely is here to stay’: NJ considering new tax break for hybrid offices

New Jersey officials say they’re contemplating a new tax break designed to lure companies interested in having their staff work from home rather than in the office full time.

Teased by Gov. Phil Murphy in his State of the State address Tuesday, the proposal is still under development and would require approval from state lawmakers. It’s an attempt to align the state’s incentive programs with a new post-pandemic reality where employees expect flexible work schedules, said Tim Sullivan, CEO of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.

“There’s economic opportunity for New Jersey residents to get good jobs in remote or hybrid work settings, and as long as those people are paying New Jersey taxes, then there’s a framework whereby it makes sense to incentive them,” he said in an interview.

Under the broad outlines sketched by Sullivan, the state would offer tax breaks to companies willing to buy small, satellite offices in New Jersey to serve as occasional workspaces for their local employees. Currently, those employees may be classified as working in New York, Philadelphia or wherever else their main offices are located. Under Murphy’s vision, they’d be considered New Jersey workers, steering more tax revenue toward the Garden State.

Plans for a new hybrid-work incentive were first reported by Politico New Jerseyon Wednesday.

According to Sullivan, the new tax credit could be funded by unused subsidies from other programs. The incentive would accompany and not replace the much larger NJ Emerge, a 2020 program that seeks to attract large employers to the state but has so far found few takers.

“We must recognize that in the new, post-pandemic business environment, not every new job created for a New Jerseyan is going to be housed in a physical office in New Jersey,” Murphy said in his State of the State address. “For many New Jerseyans, working remotely is here to stay.

Numerous angles to view the WFH argument. It doesn’t matter to me as I’m closer to retirement than not but I’ll admit, having a commute that entails pouring a cup of coffee and nothing else works for me. As for the class-touching generation, it was bad enough that they sit next to each other and text, what effect does an isolated work environment have on social maturity? I’m not even considering the status of brick and mortar buildings or the impact of real estate, I’m just wondering about the long term human behavior aspect. And then there’s the pros and cons of the reduction in cars, trains and buses for a commuting, the effect on ancillary businesses, political pivoting and action plans, etc.

“There is literally no reason to have a spouse [wife]…it is the definition of financial lunacy.”

You’re specifically referring to white women, right? Try adding a splash of color to your life.

In any case, while I don’t disagree with your advice, I’d be a bit more specific and say that taking a white female lawyer as a wife is the true definition of lunacy. At an event once, I sat next to a couple who were both lawyers and in practice together — poor guy never got a word in while his bulldog wife went on and on about how her practice was focused on helping women level the playing field, etc. I certainly hope he was sneaking in a little fun on the side because dealing with that both at home and at work would make me suicidal.

“Numerous angles to view the WFH argument…”

I’ve come to the conclusion that work-from-home is not work, for the majority of people; it’s doing whatever you want at home (laundry, shopping, mowing the lawn, etc) and jumping on zoom for calls and meetings. It actually doesn’t bear any resemblance to traditional work, which involves getting up early, getting dressed, going to an office and focusing on work.

Their biggest position is $EXAS @ExactSciences

While it’s still down 56% from its mind-numbing ATH, $EXAS is up 125% in the last 3 months 🤯

But that’s not where the gains really come from

🟦 Shares held (going up until 11/17/22)
🟩 Stock price (going down until 11/17/22)

Believe it or not, @ARKInvest is excellent at accumulating as a stock goes down and incrementally selling as prices go up

I have this chart for every stock they’ve held since 2020.

  12. The Great Pumpkin says:

    Nutshell:
    • @ARKInvest generates hidden alpha in HOW they trade, not just WHAT
    • Those trades imply price targets that move over time (determined by the amount sold per price)
    • Those price targets are based on their research
    • That’s why I cover their research AND trades

When Mr. Santos disputed key findings and vowed to continue running, members of the campaign team quit, according to three of the four people The New York Times spoke to with knowledge of the study.

The episode, which has not been previously reported, is the most explicit evidence to date that a small circle of well-connected Republican campaign professionals had indications far earlier than the public that Mr. Santos was spinning an elaborate web of deceits, and that the candidate himself had been warned about just how vulnerable those lies were to unraveling.”

Hell of a call by me, but got f’ed. That’s why timing the bottom is tough.

I’m tempted to start DCA back into DNA starting tomorrow. Don’t know how much insider selling is left, but I am smart enough to know that’s the only reason these cheap shares are available. Most people will not be selling at these levels. The supply is from insiders. Now do you have the balls to buy when insiders are selling at the low? Think hold my nose and jump in tomorrow. Pray for me.

  20. 3b says:

    Small Gov,

Yes, I also believe that is part of the WFH model. I find myself throwing a load of laundry in but that’s just because it takes as much time to do it as it does walking to a coffee maker in work. I get your point, though, and it’s one of the many pros/cons in the debate. A jury would be dead-locked on the ‘for and against’ argument.

  22. Fast Eddie says:

I’ll out that series on the ‘to watch’ list.

  23. Phoenix says:

It’s where bullying moved. One of our managers was having a talk. She make a joke with a barking sound. Asked to repeat it, she did, I watched one of the “youngsters” (actually 30) snap a snapchat, add a filter with a dog face, and send it to 50 people in under 10 seconds.

So he’s lamenting he may be missing his huge opportunity in this near penny stock because it got away from him at $1.50 (he says while it was at 1.64)….

First, if a long term investment decision turns on 14 cents I really don’t know what to say…that is the level of stupidity that can only be accomplished by someone who buys a pancake in a can company…that was REAL guys, for all his ‘great’ imaginary investments one of the few places he actually put his money was in a pink sheet company trying to grab retail shelf space for a non-existent *pancake in a can*…SMH…THAT is who you are trying to interact with…with whom you are attempting to have an intelligent conversation…

    Second, he’s a liar and a coward….and a horrible liar at that….

I’m staring at the trades from 1/10….starting at 10:31am and right up through about 2:00pm – three and a half hours – and here are the share volumes traded at the ask on DNA at the price noted….$1.50 (1.6 million shares), $1.49 (1.4 million shares), $1.48 (876k shares)…..nearly FOUR million shares were bought at $1.50 or below…

Hmmmmm….he couldn’t get filled on any of those 4 million shares….he must have been swinging an AON (all-or-nothing) order at 5 million shares is my guess…LOLOLOL.

He had more than ample opportunity to throw in a GTC limit order at 1.50 at any time, and get filled there just days ago….

Seriously, he is a liar and and a frightened little boy…he will never follow through, and certainly never at size, on ANYTHING he attempts to converse with you….Why you guys allow someone this hollow to occupy any part of your consciousness, and why he has any bytes whatsoever on here, is beyond me….

“The Great Pumpkin says: January 11, 2023 at 10:12 am. Well, wasn’t meant to buy DNA yet. Of course when I am ready to buy at 1.50…it runs up. Now I have to wait.”

So how much did you buy?

  40. leftwing says:

3b, joyce tossing in the pumpkin-free days towel today…explain later…

    Hey Pumpkin you Dumb Fuck….

Yeah, I saw your date…I quoted a similarly dated post of yours in my post…the points of which obviously flew right over your thick skull as the exact date is irrelevant to the points….Anyway, they are….

    1. Impossible to time the market bottom, let alone to the penny. It’s a fool’s mission which, well, is right up your alley.

    2. No need to time any stock to nearly that level of specificity for a long term buy and hold. It will not have that great an impact on LT returns.

    3. Maybe most importantly since you have a sunk cost of 3.20 buying in at 1.50 or 1.64 isn’t going to make a whit of a difference. The bigger question, which you are entirely incapable of answering, is whether you should be buying more.

Anyway, it’s funny….DNA is up on one of my watchlists and when I saw drift toward 1.50 there was an options trade that presented itself. Very simple one, you really don’t need any experience in the securities. Not one I would do, because I have better uses for my capital and it came with some limitations. But those limitations did not matter insofar as I understood the gibberish you present as a personal investment plan.

Anyway, it will land an outstanding return in your lap with an enviably favorable risk/reward curve….I came so close, actually had something typed in the comment section to 3b saying I was going to post directly to you, and then I thought “you know this guy is such an insufferable little prick, why would I help him, fuck him” and I deleted the comment. Happy now I did.

Anyway, in lieu of helping you with a specific opportunity to engineer you out of your loss how about I give you an opportunity to show you’re not the gutless wonder we all know?

So your sunk with a 50% loss on your current DNA position (lol) but it is your own stated goal to buy more for the long term…..rather than all this fictional “ooh, ooh look I called a bottom in hindsight so my performance is measured from there” how about instead we give you the opportunity to actually step up to the plate and show that you are not in fact the little cowering frightened animal you present?

Here….name an amount. Material, not some bullshit $8k that’s a rounding error on many of our stock returns, but something that both matters to you yet is prudent financially. You name the amount, we don’t. But once you name the amount of additional DNA investment you also name a share price at which you buy that amount. Hard numbers, aggregate dollars and execution price. And then you put in that order, good til cancelled.

What say? Play in the real world with and like an adult? Or stay in your fictional little construct of missed opportunities and 50% declines being actually gains somehow?

I’ll bet the latter, you insufferable little coward.

Even though the US homeownership rate has been rising since 2016, the mortgage debt service ratio of Americans remains near record lows. Homeowners as a cohort have likely never been less burdened by their monthly payments.

From a macro stress test standpoint the tens of millions of households who bought/refinanced prior to 2021 just can’t be impaired by the economic cycle going forward. It’s just an unusual thing to have such a dividing line between the haves and have-nots.

Yup, I broke my streak guys and replied to the idiot!…Not proud of it, but the best analogy I can give is that we are all out at a dinner together, big round table, good and spirited conversation enjoying ourselves. Meanwhile, some drunken fool next to us keeps bellowing bullshit loudly, banging everyone’s chairs as he keeps getting up and down, and just being an otherwise unmanageable douche….

What do you do? Ignore him as long as you can and then either toss his ass or just leave.

Since I can’t toss his ass I’m just going to take a hiatus again…but….GRIM….

How about we move this roadshow to Discord?

Assuming many are familiar, but if not….among other things it’s a free chat hosting service…really great, would allow full replication of the site here. Basically everything we do here we can do there but additionally (i) posters have the ability to edit their posts after made, something I would really appreciate here, and (ii) there is a mute button.

I’m on three discords, all of them spun out of Reddit discussion sites that were once good but got hijacked so a sub-group hopped off into private discords. I wouldn’t suggest a private discord here, keep it open…part of the reason I appreciate this group so much (and assume others do as well) is for the well informed differing views and backgrounds of posters unlike me along with everyone else I more closely align. Invite everyone, including the village idiot. But, for me now like before, the volume of the bullshit and the distraction/hijacking has become so high again here it just makes it too unpleasant for me. And it brings out the worst in me likely making me unpleasant for you guys. It sounds minor but that mute button would be a godsend since to joyce’s great analogy you can’t ask for the salt from a third party without everyone being party to the conversation…..Even better anyone who finds me objectionable has the benefit of just muting my sorry ass! Also, seriously, having an edit post feature would be great. Discord is anonymous as well. And we can have ‘channels’ in it, distinct areas for specific topics that may not be general interest, eg. hockey, stocks, best way to get divorced lol, etc. And there is a DM feature (Lib, more specific stock setups incoming real time!)

Grim, it costs nothing so with a migration there you save whatever hosting money you’re paying here…make you admin, pick another and pick a couple people to be moderators (think you need those roles but there is very little to do). It’s pre-packaged, so very little work. Plus, it has an Android/ios app so I can stop killing my vision trying to read/reply here through a website on my phone…I went to my discord page, something can be set up with very little effort and in no time.

For those not familiar https://discord.com/ Started as a voice chat app for gamers to communicate while gaming IIRC. Much wider now.

    Thoughts/comments?

I really enjoy this place and everyone. I just can’t keep wading through the useless endless sea of garbage anytime I check in to see what’s going on. It becomes not fun.

As seriously off-balance as I (and others) know you to be, you have as much right to this space as I do.

It’s an obvious and open question why, when numerous people with whom you presumably want to interact concurrently request you to dial back certain behavior, you double-down with more of that same behavior. You doing you. Go for it. I’m sure it’s worked well in your personal life so far.

Open forum here, so my choices are to accept or for me to adjust. I’ll choose the latter.

Re: Discord, I’ve been thinking that for a while as it worked extremely well in other groups I participate. Grim can think of it as a technology upgrade, this forum was started pre-iphone FFS. I’m sure everyone here would appreciate the ability to edit. The mute is gravy. And otherwise nothing else is forfeited by a move. Seems like a really nice alternative. Again, not my call which is why I posed the question to our host.

Security lines are insane still too. It should not take 90 minutes to get screened. They flagged me and my son for additional screening too. Only metal I had on was my wedding ring. They wanted to swipe my phone for the explosives test, but it was like 25 bins away in back of the line and I could not get it. They swiped my hands instead. For my son I kid you not they wanted to open his PS5 game console he had in his backpack. They put it on the counter and I laughed and told em to have at it. They gave up after about two minutes as the line for additional screening was about 10 deep now, old guy with a cane and an an old person in a wheel chair too we’re getting flagged for no reason.
