Survivorship bias? Literally.

From the NY Post:

Single women are outpacing men in homeownership

All the single ladies … are buying property.

Indeed, a recent study found that single women are outpacing single men in homeownership.

This new trend has come as a shock to many — and is bound to have long-term effects on the financial market and generations to come.

Single women own roughly 10.7 million homes in America, compared to 8.1 million owned by single men, according to a recent analysis from LendingTree that looked at 2021 census data.

The surprising development has spread nearly all across the country, with single women being more likely to own a home in 48 of 50 states — all but North and South Dakota.

Women dominate ownership at the highest rates in southern states like Louisiana, Alabama and South Carolina, which typically have cheaper home prices.

Meanwhile, Florida, Delaware and Maryland reported the widest gender gap among single homeowners. The Sunshine State has a 4.55% gap equating to 262,000 more single women owning homes than men.

North Dakota and South Dakota, the sole states where single men own more homes than single women, are known to be homes to job markets saturated with male-dominated professions, such as oil rigging and construction.

How can you do this kind of study and not look at age as a factor here?

How many are either the single male or single female homeowners simply those who have outlived their spouse? Hardly a ‘market driving trend’.

IBD article seems to be updated real time…kudos to them, much better than the WSJ where dated content hangs around beyond relevance but…

As in my year end prediction we are going to be inundated with microdata day-in and day-out and the major challenge will be to tune most of it out and have the ability to zoom out…

To that extent great for IBD reporting that data point this morning but it isn’t of enough relevance for me and certainly not predictive enough since it was basically tertiary and on forecast to get me to act on it ahead of two major events this week (Fed, earnings) especially in a trade that is 50/50 with an equal money payout in an 18 VIX environment at this price level…

As I mentioned I’ve given away potentially 1/3 of my remaining return on my SPX holdings but in return I am guaranteed a 10% return in less than a year down to about 295 with no mark-to-market delta (ie, I stay nearly a constant amount green no matter where SPX goes in the intervening time). Ditto similar trade for META (19% guaranteed down to 85 little mark-to-market delta). I’m more than willing, hell actually desire, to take singles and doubles to 4400 or so then I’ll re-evaluate, without losing appreciable ground and without the downside.

Asymmetric leveraged directional defined risk trades….said it here for years. Give away the long tail opportunity for eliminating most short tail risk while increasing the probability under the fat part of the curve enhanced with leverage….those are odds I like, not 50/50 at 18 VIX….

What do you think the probability is of hitting 4400/4800 by year end? My screen says probability of touching 4400 by year end is 56% and 4800 is 18%. I’ll wait out the 50/50 event and evaluate where we are at that time if we get there…..

Failed Republican candidate Kari Lake could face felony charges in Arizona after tweeting out pictures of voters’ signatures, as a criminal referral was sent by Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes.

Lake, who lost Arizona’s gubernatorial race to Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs by over 17,000 votes, has yet to concede, claiming that the 2022 election was stolen from her by widespread voter fraud.

In Lake’s election lawsuit, which was dismissed in court last month by Judge Peter Thompson, the former candidate endorsed by ex-President Donald Trump alleged that printing issues with voter machines in Maricopa County disenfranchised same-day voters. Thompson ruled in December, however, that Lake’s legal team did not provide clear evidence of election workers intentionally interrupting the vote.

  21. JCer says:

Eddie, meanwhile as batsh*t as Kari Lake seems that election in AZ stinks to high heavens, she lost by 17k votes in an election where they had widespread issues at polling places that just happened to be under the jurisdiction of Hobbs. That is totally within the margin of error and in a fair election without willful voter suppression I’d bet Hobbs loses. But who knows all that we know is there certainly were irregularities and based on polling Hobbs should have been lost by a significant margin.

Ex is this what it has come to, do the Democrats think we live in the USSR, Communist China or Hoxha’s Albania where we just jail our political opponents because perhaps they might find evidence of crimes commited?

  22. Fast Eddie says:

    JCer,

Liberals wouldn’t spit to give a dying baby a drink if it meant lost votes and power. As faulty as the republicans may be, the other side is downright despicable. They have a ground game and war machine despots and dictators can only dream about.

  23. Ex says:

My bet is that Trump’s “perfect” phone call to try to fond 11,000 more votes in GA will be his waterloo. A nice conviction there will mean he’ll never hold public office again. He deserves to rot in prison. But we all know he won’t. Maybe he will move to Russia….

  24. OC1 says:

Lake lost because, as Jcer noted, she is “batsh*t”.

“Lake lost 33,000 in Maricopa County alone who voted for Republicans in down-ballot races. Those 33,000 voters who backed Republicans elsewhere on the ballot voted for Democrat Katie Hobbs for governor instead.”

    F’ing liquidity. It’s all that really matters…

“Why have all stocks went gangbusters recently? Well… it seems… GLJ Research LLC Investment Strategy has the answer. That is, looking at the world’s 10 largest central banks, and the change in their balance sheets over the past 2 months, we note: (a) the Fed has…drained -$150.8B, (b) the ECB has drained -$430.1B, (c) the BoJ has injected +$631.5B, (d) the BoE has drained -$16.9B, (e) the PBoC has injected +$581.3B, (f) the BoK is flat, (g) the BoC has drained -$10.5B, (h) the BCB has drained -$8.6B, (i) the SNB has injected +$54.8B, and (j) the CBC has injected +$2.3B, for a net injection of +$653.027B over the past 2 months (money that has, largely, gone into stocks). The surprise you ask? The PBoC’s +$581.3B injection over the past 2 months of course. However, based on our contacts, China is done with the massive stimulus. So… all the liquidity that China has dumped into markets over the past 2 months, which has driven stocks, is slated to end. This could be a problem for risk assets.”

Lenovo are the absolute best laptops you can buy from a value standpoint. I buy a new one every two years from them. They sometimes have sales that are outrageous and their builds are rock solid. I just got a pretty powerful ThinkPad and it’s rock solid. It was marked down from $2,200 to $1,200 and then between credit card discounts and promo codes, I was able to get it for around $850 delivered. It arrived a week earlier than they said it would too.

  36. 3b says:

Lib: Thanks. I appreciate the recommendation. I trust your judgement and I know you know value! I will go with the Lenovo.
