Nothing is cheap anymore

From MarketWatch:

Rents just surged 10% in this affordable housing market. It was ‘bound to happen,’ one economist says.

Renters are running away from high rents in expensive cities and moving to more affordable ones — but that’s pushing up rents as much as 10% in some major metropolitan areas, according to a new report by Redfin.

In a monthly market report, the residential real-estate brokerage RDFN, -1.57% found that in April, asking rents across 33 major metro areas rose 1.1% from a year ago, which was the first such increase in more than a year. The median U.S. asking rent was $1,648 in April.

The biggest rent increases were seen in markets in the Midwest, the report found, while the biggest declines were in the Sun Belt and in Seattle.

“Rents are only up 1% nationally, and that’s mostly because less affordable rental markets are getting even more expensive, which is bound to happen as people start to move to more affordable metros from expensive ones,” Daryl Fairweather, chief economist at Redfin, told MarketWatch.

Higher rents are an additional blow to many aspiring homeowners who currently rent a home. Elevated mortgage rates and high home prices have made it so unaffordable to buy a house that in February, Realtor.com said that it was cheaper to rent than to own in all of America’s top 50 metro areas.

Homeownership is a status symbol now. Put your name on the signup sheet, keep saving your money and maybe you’ll get a call to bid on a house before you become a grandparent.

It’s always been a status symbol. Nothing has changed other than the price of admission.

Stooopid fuccs. Elitist azz holes sent jobs overseas, fattened their wallets, and hollowed out the whole manufacturing industry here. Now you are supposed to listen to the same cretins ( some on trial, some sniffing little girl’s hair) when they are trying to get you to buy overpriced American garbage (TESLA) instead of cheaper well made (BYD) and make you fear TikTok when they are all scraping your data on FaceFucc and INstaRape.

As Bill Burr says, “GO suck a diccc.” /rant

Democrats and Republicans once joined forces to engage economically with Beijing, driven by a theory that America would benefit from outsourcing production to countries that could manufacture certain goods more cheaply, in part by paying their workers low wages. Economists knew some American workers would lose their jobs, but they said the economy would gain overall by offering consumers low-cost goods and freeing up companies to invest in higher-value industries where the United States had an innovation advantage.

The parties are now competing to sever those ties.

As cities and states push to restrict the use of facial recognition technologies, some police departments have quietly found a way to keep using the controversial tools: asking for help from other law enforcement agencies that still have access.

Officers in Austin and San Francisco — two of the largest cities where police are banned from using the technology — have repeatedly asked police in neighboring towns to run photos of criminal suspects through their facial recognition programs, according to a Washington Post review of police documents.

In San Francisco, the workaround didn’t appear to help. Since the city’s ban took effect in 2019, the San Francisco Police Department has asked outside agencies to conduct at least five facial recognition searches, but no matches were returned, according to a summary of those incidents submitted by the department to the county’s Board of Supervisors last year.

you want to understand why your 22-28 year old staff have wildly confused understanding of professional norms – there’s currently a (mildly satirical) LinkedIn post by a WFH SDR talking about how he spends a bunch of time throughout his “average day” changing diapers of his (super cute) 2 month old and reading books to and playing with his (super cute) 2 year old while calling and booking meetings.

The post has like 500 likes and 100+ comments with people celebrating this.

Again: LinkedIn (and Instagram and Tiktok) is actively installing brainworms in your staff. You have to counter it.

I love kids as much as the next person – but being a hybrid childcare provider and sales person is unacceptable.

So China makes inexpensive cars (they sell better when there is quality at low prices), Americans make cars more expensive and with subscriptions and built in tracking devices (GM Onstar ratting out it’s customers) in order to get fatter and fatter.

Yeah, I’m sooooo worried about China.

As Chinese manufacturers try to sell as many cars as possible to keep their workers employed, their U.S. competitors are betting on making each vehicle sale more valuable by selling consumers software subscriptions for entertainment, hands-free driving and performance upgrades.

Seems like American car dealerships don’t want to work on their old shite anymore. Beware what you purchase.

“Had a wake up call today with my fathers 2011 Mustang. None of the Ford dealerships in Las Vegas will work on anything that is over 10 years old. I called around to other dealership makes and that was pretty much the answer I got from all of them except Toyota. One Chevy dealership will do it, maybe, if you’ve had all of your service done there. Is this a common issue across the country, or is it Las Vegas specific?”

“It’s a common issue with Ford vehicles. They don’t generally make it ten years.”

“My F150 didn’t make it 5 years before it killed itself. Well, 5 yrs 2 months.
5.0L valve springs broke, rear end went out, cam phasers flew apart. Best way to go broke is either getting into racing or buying a Ford. Never doing that again.”

“I’m dealing with the same issue right now. I wanted to get my 2018 Silverado 2500HD into the dealership. And all 3 dealers in my area would start taking my info down for intake, and as soon as they ask about mileage and tell them I have 140,000 miles, they say that they cannot work on my vehicle.”

    Phoenix,

I had a used 1996 Mustang Cobra when I was in my 20s. Put 300k miles on it. But SVTs were built different, actually, the engine was built in Germany by two specific dudes. Even got it up to 700 hp on the dyno at one point. We got a 5.0 mustang up to about 750 hp. Kinda pointless as you just have too much power relative to the grip but fun nonetheless.

Our last two purchases have been Hondas for that reason. Got the need for speed out of my system and I wanted the durability. And I got it. My 2012 Honda is still running strong with 280k on it.

Anyway, as a former ford enthusiast, I wouldn’t buy any of their modern vehicles. Company just isn’t the same anymore. I opted for Hondas now.
