From the Record:

North Jersey home of President Obama’s economic recovery board chair listed for $3.5M

Nestled along Park Street, just a few hundred feet from Montclair’s Applegate Farm stands the Tinkham-Volcker house.

Listed for sale in early November for $3.5 million by Saritte Harel of Keller Williams Realty, the six-bedroom, six-bathroom Colonial Revival at 509 Park Street is a reflection of both the town’s agricultural past and its transition into a bustling modern suburb.

Though the roughly 125-year-old home underwent some alterations in the 1940s, much of its original charm remains. From the classic stone wall along Park Street to the detached terra cotta garage built in 1914, the property has clear historical roots. However, it is also a showcase for clean modern luxury.

A recent renovation aided by Adriana Smyth Interiors has transformed the 9,000-square-foot home. There is a chef’s kitchen with premium appliances, including a La Cornue gas range, quartz countertops and a seamless connection to the formal dining room that offers picturesque views of the property’s grounds.

The Tinkham-Volcker house gets the second half of its name from its most famous resident, Paul Volcker. The cigar smoking chairman of the United States Federal Reserve Board from 1979 to 1987, Volcker also served as chair of President Barack Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board from 2009 to 2011.

Deeply rooted in New Jersey, he was born in Cape May in 1927, raised in Teaneck and educated at Princeton University. He spent a quarter century in domestic and international finance before serving two terms as chairman of “the Fed” under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. Volcker, who owned 509 Park in the 1980s, was known for his commitment to monetary restraint and inflation limiting strategies. He was also known for backing financial regulation and helping to inform the “Volcker Rule,” a feature of the Dodd-Frank Act that limits banks involvement with short-term trading, hedge funds and private equity funds.

“On paper, owning a home is almost always more expensive than renting — about 14% more, on average, after factoring in expenses like insurance, taxes, and upkeep.

But the difference has grown much more extreme in recent years as just about all homeownership costs have ballooned.

How extreme? Exact cost estimates vary, but recently the premium for homeownership has been at least 35% over renting, a level that’s near historical highs and is likely to persist.”

  59. 3b says:

Oc1: I agree. Ukraine had no chance of beating the Russians without bringing the war to the Russians, just as the Russians did to the Ukrainians. Now, on the way out the door, and as a Ukrainian defeat looks pretty clear, Biden says ok you can use the weapons.

  67. 3b says:

Oc1: But, Russia won’t get the worst deal possible in my opinions. They will get to keep Crimea which was always going to be the case, and they will keep what areas of eastern Ukraine that they have already conquered, and perhaps more. Ukraine won’t become a member of the EU for decades, so that is pushed off. The outstanding issue will be Ukraine joining NATO. I don’t see the Russians giving in on that, and I don’t see the NATO countries backing down either, perhaps some 3rd way solution on that issue.

  68. 3b says:

Small: It’s possible that the Ukraine could have defeated the Russians if they had the weapons they needed when they needed them , and were able to use them to attack Russia cities. If not beat the Russians then at least perhaps get a better deal than the one they will ultimately get. 77. OC1 says:

“Totally unprovoked”. You might not agree with their reasons but they have them. Tanks started rolling right after blinken told the Russians the door was open for Ukraine to join NATO.

Sorry, but there’s only one bad guy here- Russia.

If Russia doesn’t want one of it’s neighbors to join an alliance who’s primary purpose is to stop Russia from invading them, then Russia should just stop invading their neighbors!

    It’s really simple.

What this all shows is that it was perfectly reasonable for Ukraine to want to join NATO.

Perhaps someday Russia will become a liberal democracy and disavow their attempts at expansion, respect the treaties they sign, etc., and then they can join NATO too.

  78. 3b says:

Oc1: I don’t disagree. But, Russia will probably never let Ukraine join NATO. I don’t see how you get around that fact. In hindsight Ukraine should have never given up their nukes when the Soviet Union collapsed. That is the only thing that would have deterred the Russians from eventually attacking Ukraine which they did. As for Russia becoming a liberal democracy, that is not happening anytime soon if ever.

  83. Juice Box says:

re: “No balls to say no?”

When it gets this close to Armageddon make sure you have your affairs in order. The missile fired yesterday is primarily designed for nuclear weapons delivery, and was fired from a mobile launcher and only took 5 minutes for impact. We here in the USA get about 20 minutes warning maybe enough to get the President into a bunker maybe just maybe as hundreds of MIRV warheads arrive at MACH 10 in every major city. A sub launch off the coast and it’s over quick, you won’t have time to kiss your own ass goodbye.

THANK GOD FOR START TREATIES.. started under Regan the negotiations began in 1982 and lasted for three decades. First signed under Bush I we have limited the total number of nukes, and delivery vehicles. We also perform inspections AND the Russians do as well.

FYI on yesterdays launch. THANK GOD we were notified…

“Russia warned the United States ahead of the launch of its missile through the National Nuclear Risk Reduction Center, the Kremlin and Pentagon said. “The warning was sent in a standing automatic mode 30 minutes before the launch,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.”

We have never been this close to the end… Doomsday Clock is going to be adjusted again as it was when this war started, it was created in 1947 as the greatest danger to humanity came from nuclear weapons, in particular from the prospect that the United States and the Soviet Union were headed for a nuclear arms race.

We ended that arms race but still have enough weapons to end perhaps all of us…

  84. Juice Box says:

OC1 – Support them with what, hopes and prayers? They are out of boots on the ground, casualties are perhaps a million Ukrainians and they are scrounging now for anyone to man a trench along the 1,200-kilometer front line.

We are being lied to…they won’t be able to fight without troops no matter how many weapons we provide.

  85. Juice Box says:

    OC1- one more point.

The lies are similar to Vietnam. We ended up drafted 2.2 million men and it was never even declared a war. Fully two-thirds of the soldiers who served in the Vietnam War were drafted….

Don’t think it cannot happen again. I have young men here in my family….

  86. 3b says:

Rent: Stop the silliness with sell out Trump and Musk. Why didn’t Biden give them all the weapons that they needed when they asked? Everything was in a bit by bit fashion. And as I have pointed out there were restrictions placed by Biden on their use, only now on his way out he lifts the restrictions on the use of the weapons. Too little , too late.

  87. 3b says:

Oc1: As just said, it’s manpower, the Ukrainians don’t have the men to fight this war. The Ukrainian military police are searching small towns and villages looking for conscription dodgers. There is even an app now for their phones where people can alert others when the military police will be making sweeps looking for the conscripts. It’s a matter of numbers.

  88. OC1 says:

    3b/Juice-

Whether or not Ukraine is running out of men, I think it’s up to the Ukrainian people to decide whether their freedom and independence is worth fighting for.
