Why 11 N.J. cities have more lead-affected kids than Flint, Michigan
Eleven cities in New Jersey, and two counties, have a higher proportion of young children with dangerous lead levels than Flint, Mich., does, according to New Jersey and Michigan statistics cited by a community advocacy group.
With the eyes of the nation focused on the brain damage and other problems associated with lead-contaminated water in Flint, several community advocacy organizations in New Jersey banded together this week to draw attention to New Jersey’s lead problem, asking for a renewed focus on solving it.
In New Jersey, children 6 years of age and younger have continued to ingest lead from paint in windows, doors and other woodwork found in older homes, particularly in older, poorer cities, said Elyse Pivnick, director of environmental health for Isles, Inc., a community development organization based in Trenton.
“In light of the Flint debacle, we wanted people to understand that water is not the only thing that’s poisoning children,” she said. “Most people think the lead problem was solved when we took lead out of gasoline and new homes in the 1970s, but that’s not true.”
The communities with the high lead levels include Irvington, East Orange, Trenton, Newark, Paterson, Plainfield, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Atlantic City, New Brunswick and Passaic, along with Salem and Cumberland counties.
“You can breathe it in from dust and you can swallow it,” Pivnick said.

Also, Pivnick pointed out, in 2015, there were more than 3,000 new cases of children under the age of 6 in New Jersey with elevated levels of lead in their blood. Overall, advocates said, about 225,000 young children in the state have been afflicted by lead since 2000.

This lead story gets me really irritated. What do they want people to do?
Lead paint? Get real. Why is the kid left unsupervised? Your kid should know not to eat paint, and if the paint is chipping, put a new coat of paint on. Water? Don’t drink tap water without a filter, it’s as simple as that. Yes, we have polluted our planet and these are the consequences.
Sad part, they will never change the filter even if the govt provided them with a filter. They also will only care that their kid ate lead paint if money is involved. Could care less about the child’s health based on the fact that the child is eating lead paint. My two cents.

Paint chips on dirt is like Baco’s to a caesar salad.
I actually had to get my home tested for lead in order to do a refi with Narragansett Insurance. I did pretty well. Only lead was on window frames and door frames where the paint chipped due to the movement. Of course, I repaint my windows and doors like twice a year since they are easy to do and my tenants seem to turnover that frequently lately. I just replaced the 16 windows in my 2nd unit, so no more lead there. Downstairs unit still has a large number of original windows. Will replace them when the tenants move out.
In other news, replaced return pipe to boiler with tiny leak in it ($1,500 in on plumbing repairs) and still adding tons of water. I’m fcuked. Must be a crack in the boiler itself but don’t see any steam coming out the chimney. With the amount of water I am losing, I can’t believe there’s a leak somewhere else in the system. Next step, rent a thermal scanner from HD. What’s another $50 at this point? Might just put in the auto water filler at this point. Tenant is sick of running downstairs three times per day to refill the boiler. Spring can’t come soon enough.
It’s all in the lease. Besides, I maintain my property. Also, since it’s a four family, I have to play by the same rules as hotels. I have to get inspected every 5 years. What amazes me is how strict they are with my property, yet the patersons and passaics of nj somehow pass this inspection on homes that have 3 apartments or more (2 families don’t have to deal with this). They are in terrible shape, but somehow get the pass.

Also, all plastic objects containing lead over time release some lead in dust – whether Chinese made blinds or computers or toys.

Another interesting source of contamination is the paint on the elevated train lines…..tons of lead dust contamination in all those neighborhoods around the city….not just airborne either……one of the most common ways supposedly is people walking through streets and then not taking off their shoes at home, lead build up in carpets…..toddlers/babies live on these surfaces…..confirmed by sampling data…

During an appearance before the City Council Tuesday morning, Mayor Ras Baraka revealed that Newark — the largest city in New Jersey – had just nine vehicles for plowing and salting roads during a storm that paralyzed much of the city for days. By comparison, South Orange, with a population of just over 16,000, claims at least 30.
Baraka claimed the fleet was decimated as trucks were sold off following former Mayor Cory Booker’s effort to privatize of the city’s sanitation department in 2010, which eventually ended in 92 employees being laid off.
“Its shameful,” he said. ” If we tried to plow the snow ourselves we would be still plowing it (Tuesday).”
With so few resources of their own, officials were forced to lean heavily on outside contractors — though that also failed to go as planned.
The city approved contracts with 9 vendors in November 2014, setting aside up to $2.5 million in order to provide as many as 125 plows and 85 bucket trucks, front loaders and other equipment to assist with snow removal. According to officials, however, those deals do not require the contractors to commit all of those resources to Newark alone.

I know all the damn rules. I have to. I own a four family built before 1978. I have to have all the lead paperwork (even though I don’t have lead due to the house being gutted and repaired) because I own a home before 1978. Like I stated earlier, I have to adhere to hotel rules due to it being more than a 2 family. A 2 family you do not have to worry about anything if you know what you are doing (meaning having the ability to avoid renters that aren’t going to throw the law book at you). I have to deal with a hardcore inspection every 5 years by the state. I also have to pay them to do this in fees. Even if I had lead paint, if you paint it over enough times it is seriously nothing to worry about. If I do any type of construction on my property, I have to have a lead certified contractor do the work due to the dust.

Reading about the on-call prohibition regulations in NYC and other cities, prohibiting employers from using workers on an on-call basis. The regulatory requirements and complaints of the workers reminded me of a part-time nanny we hired. She demanded:
Guaranteed min. hours per week.
High hourly rate
Comp for travel time
Comp for gas
Against my advice, the wife hired her. She was chronically late, would call in for things like a sick cat or reluctance to drive her new car in the snow, and told us she appreciated our “flexibility.” We later learned she would routinely deviate to Starbucks while driving my daughter to school (making her late at times), and once even brought my kids to her house and had them help her fold laundry (hers!)
When we adjusted her hours, she screamed like a stuck pig and pointed out that her “other family” would still pay her if they sent her home early or she couldn’t work. She got truculent when she demanded monthly schedules and we refused, and she said we were not being straight with her while she provided us with exemplary service (in fact, that was anything but true as we learned during and after). Final straw was when we asked her to pick up another of our children and she balked because it was farther away (and would mean she would be working during the set time we were paying her rather than home playing with the cat). Her excuse was that her husband “needed the car” (first time we heard that one).
We thought hard about her demands for “fair treatment” along the lines of the SJWs and the SEIU agitators.
And we made a decision. We fired her.
(she had the nerve to complain that there was no notice. I responded “in what industry do you get notice when you are fired?” and hung up on her)

“My worst fears have been realized,” said current party leader Alexander Pechtold. “The suspect’s motive is shocking and confrontational. Els was killed because of her socially and politically groundbreaking work on euthanasia.”
Prosecution spokeswoman Jeichien de Graaff said Van U.’s statement in court would be taken into account in a psychiatric assessment that aims to help judges decide if he can be held criminally responsible for his actions.
Van U. was arrested last year on suspicion of stabbing his sister to death, de Graaff said. Prosecutors say that during the investigation into that slaying, he gave DNA samples that were found to match traces of DNA found at the scene of Borst’s slaying.
Van U. is charged with murder or, alternatively, manslaughter in both slayings.
