Welcome to post-covid

From NJ1015:

Many NJ residents believe it’s time to move on from COVID

Even as the omicron surge continues to drop, a new poll finds Garden State residents are still concerned about COVID but only to a certain point.

Patrick Murray, the director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said the just-released survey finds almost two years after the pandemic began, “70% say it’s time we just accept it’s here to stay and get on with our lives.”

The survey finds 89% of Republicans feel this way along with 71% of independents, while 47% of Democrats agree it’s time to accept the virus and move on.

He said the poll finds “a majority of 52% support having some sort of facemask and social distancing guidelines, but that’s down from 63% back in September.”

Murray said when we look at approval for “vaccine mandates in workplaces, that number is now down to 43%, from 53% just a few months ago.”

“People are saying they’re not working so how can we mandate them,” he said.

About a third of respondents, 34%, believe the COVID outbreak will be brought under control by the end of the year, but 28% think a return to normalcy will never happen.

The survey also finds about a third of people who have been vaccinated report also being infected with COVID, and 61% of those who have not gotten a shot say they have been infected with the virus.

People like to ask what happened to the Republican Party in the wake of Trump. When did liberal values entirely evaporate?

Apparently Maher had the former head of the ACLU on who was miffed on the whole free speech issue. I have to watch it. It’s on the list. But long story short, he said that he, despite his obvious reservations defended some Nazi fanatics in Illinois right to free speech in the 70s and explained it was vital as that same case was soon referenced by some Jewish group that was being oppressed and denied free speech. I don’t know the specifics. But that must have been where that scene from Blues Brothers comes from.

Rogan’s apology video came across as pretty genuine, I’ve got to give him that. Made a pretty strong argument for taking his show out of context, being defined by media headlines. A lot of honesty, about the show, success, etc.

Pfizer looks to be submitting an updated vax eua for 6m-5y this week.

  5. The Great Pumpkin says:

Again, freedom of speech is not being attacked. What’s being attacked is a popular platform that influences millions of people presenting some angry ex-scientist as the legitimate authority on vaccines…..because in his deranged mind, he is the father of the vaccine.

Look what happened because of it. Why are all the righties jumping on this. That’s all they are talking about. Why are people using this interview as a means to go against vaccines? I could understand if he was being presented as a kook… but he was not. He was presented as an authority figure on the subject and that is wrong. Even BRT talked about how distinguished he is, does that mean we should listen to him in a disgruntled state?

I hope the country can recover and come out stronger from this, but things are def heading in the wrong direction. Science and doctors have been made to look like fools these days. They now have a lot of work to get the public to trust them again….thank you politics. The right wing media did a hell of a job discrediting some of the most important institutions in our lives….all because they want to discredit the current party in power. How low can you go in your lust for power? Sad.

  6. The Great Pumpkin says:

Right wing media already did a number on our efforts to deal with climate change, attacking it as a lefty power grab. It’s just sad. WTF is wrong with these people. Why do they try to stop progress on understanding our planet and the massive changes happening to it.

  7. Libturd says:

For the same reason they feel gays shouldn’t be married. Political divisiveness. Lord help the average Republican who has a gay daughter or son.

  8. BRT says:

Apparently Fauci was asked why the reluctance to approve Covaxin, a deactivated virus vaccine that contains much more genetic information. His response. We don’t need it, we have enough vaccines. If he was truly interested in getting the vaccination rate up, he would give the consumer more options. Moreover, why is Pfizer and Moderna so heavily favored? Why do they get exclusive market access?

Why is he so against bringing a different vaccine to market. What is he? An antivaxxer?

  9. Libturd says:

    BRT,

It’s the profit motive. There was a lot of money to be made on these vaccines. I would love to see the original fast-tracked contracts and their guarantees. Not defending Fauci here. All of these appointed White House guys are puppets. Not a partisan issue.

  10. Grim says:

I’d heard comments earlier about not wanting to impact global vaccine supply by approving everything. Seems like something to come out of a PR firm – we are doing this to help the rest of the world secure vaccine supply.

    Venezuela . . .

About 6m people have left Venezuela in the last few years. The country had a population around 30m.

The msm doesn’t cover it much anymore, but apparently the exodus continues. One migrant, traveling to Colombia with his pregnant wife, says “I can’t allow my daughter to be born in a place where she might have to go to bed hungry.”

On hyperinflation, it seems that people have shifted to using USD where possible because transacting in local currency is very difficult.

I’m a firm believer in communication is everything, even though I am terrible at it myself. Current politicians have a major issue with communication. Maybe it’s all the divisive hate that is responsible for politicians being all over the place with their communication…I don’t know.

At the end of the day, if you become a politician, it should be because you are a good person, and want to help this country and their people. The rest falls into place. Money and power have destroyed current politics. I think it’s time the people of this country unite and fight for the right to be governed by good people with good intentions. Enough with attacking to gain votes. You should gain votes on good ideas that will help our country.

How do we solve this. Pre-requisite for becoming a politician: background check with all the people in your life. If they say you are a genuine good person, you get to run for election. If people think of you as a bad person, you don’t get to run for election.

We all know who the good people are in our lives. They are all afraid of going into politics because hate and anger now rule politics.

I suspect Whoopi’s position was more about racism being dominated as a white vs. black issue, as opposed to being some kind of overt antisemitism. The comment about letting white people kill each other, to me, cemented this. Not defending her at all, but it raises another point about which types of racism we allow to define racism.

Show me one. The closest you will find is Bernie and yet he still has his soc1alist romanticism flaw. There is not a single politician in DC and very few at even the local level, who aren’t in it for themselves. One needs to measure their performance, not by their crimes committed (since politicians will never be found guilty since they appoint the judges), but through their morality. We have come to the point that Watergate would have been acceptable. Where politicians have no shame in insider trading, accepting sweetheart loans, practicing nepotism whenever possible and lying so frequently that even Pinocchio is jealous.

    Name me ONE clean politician.

Wonder how Whoopi would explain the genocide in Rwanda .

  31. Libturd says:

Most white people are clueless to the racist and anti-Semitic myths that black people believe. Until you share a room in college with two impressionable 18-year old brothers, you have no idea how culturally rooted it is. You won’t find these ignorant misconceptions among those black people who have “made it.” It comes from the ghetto. The same phenomenon exists with the hatred of Jews among the white ghetto trash as well. I know. I’ve experienced it first hand with two different contractors. One from Vernon and the other from the outskirts of Philly. The latter couldn’t even get his typical day laborers to work on my place once they found out I was Jewish. This contractor has become a close friend of the family and my brother has even represented him in court. But he clearly has a list of good Jews and bad Jews. Sometimes he forgets I’m Jewish and says the dumbest, most ignorant things.

I don’t need to look it up. I guarantee you Whoopie grew up in the ghetto.

  32. Libturd says:

And yes, Whoopi is smart enough and has been around enough Jews in her career to know not to be racist or anti-Semitic. I’m sure this is a semantic thing or words taken out of context.

No one is squeaky clean. It’s just life.

You won’t agree with your friends all of the time, or your spouse.

But some people have better attributes, or align more with your views.

Personally I leaned more towards Gabbard or Bernie, even though Bernie was an old goat-he understood how helping the youth is necessary.

Have a friend, Pro Repub, as staunch as it gets. His parents are old- burned through hundreds of thousands at a nursing home. It’s true, I saw the numbers. But they are still alive, and the money has run out. His mom is sick-needs a doctor, but no one wants Medicaid ( they no longer qualify for Medicare) as they are broke and can’t pay the premiums.

This person is quite wealthy-earned it the hard way, and I have plenty of respect for him. But even he has told me now is the time for socialized medicine, he can’t see it continuing to function the way it is.

When I hear that from someone like him I know the earth has tilted off it’s axis.

Whoopie Goldberg is one of the few people who fled freedom to live in communist East Germany for three years from 1979 to 81. And decades later still said nice things about her time there, going out of her way not to criticize its governance at the time. Peak Cold War and she chose the blatantly wrong side. Since then she’s been doing her part to bring the ideals of East Germany to the US. About communism she said “we haven’t given it enough time”. She said life there “was interesting” because she worked with young people in an East German theater troupe. I bet their theater wasn’t about overthrowing East Germany’s power structure or fighting for freedom of speech.

CNN/MSDNC don’t even pretend to try. CBS throws McLain’s daughter or Cheney on opposite some raging leftist and says they’re balanced, lol.

AOC is only leaving twitter because she can’t have sex with me.
This new thing about quitting stuff and saying it’s about anxiety or mental health, ok that’s fine, but then people make it seem like a heroic act. Like the people who applauded Naomi Osaka for quitting a tournament, saying that was such a brave act. Or applauded her for having a great attitude about losing in the second round of the Australian Open. I don’t doubt AOCs followers will say how brilliant and brave it is for her to quit Twitter.

Want to read a story about someone actually suffering from stress and overcoming it? Below is a story about a really brave athlete, Tyler Matzek. He went from being a washed up pitching prospect who couldn’t even throw the ball to his catcher anymore, to getting the call to come into postseason baseball games with the bases loaded, nobody out – the most stressful possible situation for someone with a history of wildness. https://www.theringer.com/year-in-review/2021/12/30/22855842/tyler-matzek-atlanta-braves-world-series-champion-yips-journey

And of course that is nothing compared to the stress of being a fighter pilot, a marine under fire, a fireman running into a burning building, a policeman pursuing suspects into a dark alley, etc. I hope the new and improved James Bond doesn’t call a time out during the next movie to “protect his mental health” right before a bomb to destroy the world goes off. So brave! Heart emoji.

My friends advocate for this as well but they are the same people mesemerized by how ridiculously “profitable” the whole covid testing industrial complex is. This is what happens when something is “free”. And we’ve all already been in the lines or victims of the shortage. I’m not against it per se, but I think they should do this at the state level. Let individual states bankrupt themselves if they want to. A national program doesn’t give the states any incentive to manage it properly. In fact, quite the opposite. Medicaid/Medicare fraud was always a major source of revenue for Florida.

Terrible/lazy analogy, if trying to compare this to the leftist has-been burnouts attempting to silence Rogan. Not sure if you’re being deliberate or not, but you’re clearly taking a page from the fake news outlets in creating the impression that the state of Tenn is banning the book, when in reality this is one school board (McMinn County) removing the book from the 8th grade curriculum because they felt the vulgarity and nudity were inappropriate for that specific age group. I have no idea if that means the book becomes part of the curriculum of one of the higher grades, but minimally I’d assume it’s available through the high school library. I also assume you’d agree the book is not appropriate for elementary school age kids so it’s really just splitting hairs as to whether it becomes appropriate in 8th grade or in high school — and it’s perfectly reasonable for different school boards to have different opinions as to which grade it belongs in. This is a fake news nothingburger.

  50. The Great Pumpkin says:

Uhhmm…please give your friend a swift kick in the ass….

Let me follow his logic (?)….the one true ‘socialized’ tranche of medicine we have – open to everyone – is Medicaid. Broadly, there are two other tranches, Medicare and private pay.

So your friend looks out and sees his mom in a situation he doesn’t like in ‘socialized’ medicine yet he won’t pay to get her out of there and instead his solution is to socialize everyone else’s medicine?

Because they are more likely to pay for better accommodations for his mom than he is? LOL.

Or because by socializing everything he believes the lowest end of care currently will be magically lifted up as opposed to the other two tranches pulled down to the unacceptable socialized standard?

JFC…..I hope he’s not in a career that requires analysis and reasoning…hopefully he’s a history teacher in some Abbott school or the like.

More intentional misinformation. Real statisticians use per capita to make an apple to apple comparison. Only morons would leave population figures out. Then there is a time constraint that plays into this, like when you were convinced Covid would only impact blue states. You hardly make a case for free speech when all you use your hard-earned right for is to deceive. Then again, that’s essentially the populist manifesto.

re: ” won’t pay to get her out of there”

Yeah all too familiar, burned into recent memory as plenty of old people were left to die by their families in the nursing homes during the first covid outbreak. Their children were all featured in the media how the nursing home was not protecting mom or dad. Some of these families had five kids, none took in dear old mom or dad. Many are suing now too.

There was just a settlement between the State of NJ for the 119 of the 200 veterans who died in the three state run Veterans nursing homes. Each family will get $445,000 but do have to use some of that money for medical costs.

re: stop letting people spread misinformation…

Pumps you are mistaken here. Spotify is only one destination on a massive web of information published on the internet. Unless we are going to act like China or worse North Korea you cannot silence the internet. The information right or wrong it out there, in many many places. Some places like the dark web that are nearly impossible to shut down unless we kill the internet completely. People are up in arms about a comic book of Holocaust stories from Polish Jews being banned in one school system. That story can be found on the internet, kids TODAY don’t need to check a book out of a school library to read it and probably more will read it now because some school board banned it and it made it into the MSM. It’s much easier for kids to go to some online place like the uncensored library in Minecraft and read whatever they want. There are also many darker places that are for more mature audiences but kids will find it anyway.

No banning, only labels. Just like rock in roll in the 1980s. The parents wanted labels they did not want it banned.

  67. Libturd says:

    Nomad,

I am completely guessing (as usual). I think the macro story goes something like this. The market would turn south so rapidly if the FED pulls the trigger on any serious rate increases or even trying to remove the government from asset purchasing. I think the FED truly believed inflation was caused by the supply chain issue which they expected to resolve itself. But the supply chain issue was caused by the FEDs showering 99% of the population with free money which they didn’t need. Heck, most people were saving more than ever by working from home and not eating out, so they immediately spent those extra dollars. Supply couldn’t keep up and it still can’t. The correction that just occurred was due to the mere idea of removing all of this extra easy money circulating through the economy. Can you just imagine how bad it might get once they actually pull the trigger?

So I’m guessing they don’t. And the market is guessing this as well. Rally on until the crash folks.

  68. Libturd says:

Or it could all just be Fauci’s fault.

  69. No One says:

I think Whoopie’s original comments were ok. Very broadly, the Holocaust was about inhumanity more than race. She made an apology probably as an act of damage control. People jumped on it more because it might sound bad if you interpret it one way, but it’s pretty obvious Goldberg’s original comment wasn’t mean spirited or some sort of anti-Jewish holocaust denialism that some made it out to be. But maybe she was trying to puff herself up by implying that only she can play the race card, and as long as the Holocaust was about groups of white people getting killed, then it’s not a race crime, which these days is supposed to be a worse crime. Kind of like how hundreds of black people can kill other black people in Chicago with regular crime, then that’s not a headline, but if one imaginary white person beats up a black person with an imaginary noose in Chicago, then that’s just totally unacceptable and makes national headlines, because that’s racist.

I’ve never claimed he was an ‘objectivist’, far from it. I don’t believe that endpoint can be attained in any media…my main point in this debate has been that all the programs we are discussing are talk shows regardless of how they portray themselves….entertainment….which is why I don’t listen to any of Rogan, MSDNC, the View, etc….anyone who goes to any of these outlets looking for actionable facts on serious matters deserves whatever befalls them…which leads to….

Lib, you really got upon not-the-Right side of bed today, huh. Yeah, the leftists would never, ever, shade facts to deceive…holy jesus, people like Cuomo, the dude that has the massive head of hair and glasses on CNN, and that loud black chick on CNN/MSDNC are downright comedy routines.

And, the last point that ties everything together, even a first year film student can tell you there is no such thing as ‘truth’ or an ‘objective documentary’ even if one were to just open up a video camera and let it run…the mere selection of one topic over another is opinion not fact, even before the facts are edited or presentation is made on any topic chosen….

Extreme heat in the world’s oceans passed the “point of no return” in 2014 and has become the new normal, according to research.

Scientists analysed sea surface temperatures over the last 150 years, which have risen because of global heating. They found that extreme temperatures occurring just 2% of the time a century ago have occurred at least 50% of the time across the global ocean since 2014.

In some hotspots, extreme temperatures occur 90% of the time, severely affecting wildlife. More than 90% of the heat trapped by greenhouse gases is absorbed by the ocean, which plays a critical role in maintaining a stable climate.

    Lib re: long PYPL, SBUX….

As I mentioned before in this market I’m basically setting up situations to buy shares 10-20% off their current price sometime in the future and getting paid to do so.

For PYPL, I wrote some 145 puts a while back covered with some 135 puts when the stock was around 165 or so. Got paid 2.80 per share to do so. The stock closed after hours at 144 yesterday. I’ll be looking at about a 1.10 loss on this position when it opens as a result of this 31 point decline (how’s that for risk mitigation). Will likely close and book a profit on the 135s, and roll the 145 shorts down to a lower level, to a price in the 130s. Depending where markets go I’ll be set up in the future to take delivery of shares at that new price in the 130s or lower.

SBUX is similar but a short term setup just to book regular weekly cash…it’s for this Friday, bought some 97/101 call spreads financed by writing 2x 89 puts for essentially no money out of pocket, trade went on for net no cost….I will make dollar for dollar any gain above 97 up to 4.00…I only get tapped at 89 or below in which case similar to PYPL I would adjust that price downward and further out for no cost, take shares, or suck up the loss.

The longer term ones like PYPL are to get into the stock much cheaper in this uncertain market for a LT hold…the less than one week ones like SBUX are to harvest several $k or so low risk, no cost (or receive a credit) positions each week that can really add up…risk is reasonable and capital commitment nominal.

Will be an interesting day with PYPL movement…
