Dear Mom & Dad…

From Business Insider:

5 years ago, only 85 US cities had starter homes that cost at least $1 million. Now there are 233.

The typical price of a starter home was $1 million or higher in 233 US cities last month, a new report from Zillow found.

To define starter home prices, Zillow looked at estimated home values toward the bottom of the market in each city, between the 5th and 35th percentiles for each area.

The real-estate listings site found that the typical price of starter homes in at least one city in half of all US states reached $1 million or higher.

The typical price for a starter home nationally stood at $192,514 — well under $1 million. However, the Zillow data shows just how expensive homes have become since 2020, including in states like Rhode Island and Minnesota that aren’t historically known for ultra-pricey real estate. Five years ago, only 85 cities had typical starter homes costing $1 million and up.

California led Zillow’s 2025 list of places with the most expensive starter homes, with 113 cities where the typical one is $1 million or higher. New York, with 32 cities, and New Jersey, with 20, followed.

“Lovingly Maintained” says the description minus the walnut paneling, degraded roof and basement odor. When you’ve visited 5,000 houses for sale, you can identify things blindfolded by smell alone. Someone slap this house tour guide for the writeup.

    “$750,000 on a 60 x 100 lot…”

I will say that this is one of the most tastefully remodeled interiors that I’ve seen; kudos to the designer. Having said that, Eddie is right that you’ve got a future brownfield site in the backyard. Astonishing actually, that someone would sink so much $$$ into this home given that it backs to a factory.

Not that I’m thrilled with getting old, but very happy to now just be a spectator when it comes to the nonsensical housing market. I recall helping to clean out my wife’s grandmother’s home in Clark — looked exactly like the ones that Eddie linked and backed to the GSP — in the early 90’s; don’t recall precisely, but I think my father-in-law planned to list it around 150k.

  10. White Trash Eddie says:

    SmallGov,

That house is neatly kept it seems but not for 750K. That’s just nauseating. The industrial park is bad enough but it’s forced air which sucks and those so-called bedrooms in the basement will never pass inspection. There’s no means of egress. And it’s on a 60 x 100 lot in a town that’s not considered “to die for” in recent years. The point being that the overall cost of housing is just unhinged.

  11. RentL0rd says:

10:02, You are not a spectator but as a boomer you are the cause of the problem.

  12. 3b says:

Fast:Housing market is unhinged from reality. I think a lot of people are just ignoring it now. Marriage rates birth rates are still rapidly declining, so what’s the point of a 3 /4 bedroom house, with a hefty property tax bill on top of it.

  13. 3b says:

Small Gov: It’s all your fault!

  14. White Trash Eddie says:

so what’s the point of a 3 /4 bedroom house

Prestige. Suzanne would tell you so. The number of bathrooms in a house is a coefficient of wealth. Two baths are the norm, one means you’re barely making it. Three bedrooms means you have a few bucks put away and have a yard big enough for a birthday party. Four bathrooms separates you from the “middle” class. You have a German import in the garage (not driveway) and vacation at far away islands. Anything above four bathrooms means you live in Saddle River, Alpine, Upper Mountain Avenue (don’t even have to mention the town. If you don’t know, you don’t deserve to live in North Jersey), Deal, Bay Head or various enclaves of Hunterdon County. I don’t do the Princeton area, let Philly deal with it.

  15. Dark Phoenixs says:

Umm, it’s pretty simple. Women still want that big house-kids or not. Guys want the pussy, they will buy it for her.

    It ain’t rocket science.

What you don’t get is that women aren’t rational, they are emotional, and if they want a new kitchen cause they don’t like the color, you will buy it for them anyway just to get them to shut up.

. Marriage rates birth rates are still rapidly declining, so what’s the point of a 3 /4 bedroom house, with a hefty property tax bill on top of it.

  16. Dark Phoenix says:

Plus, there is a real strategy to it:

When you take half of something 20 years down the road, it’s important that you have something more valuable to take.

So if you buy her a 300k house, she only gets 15ok.

Plus it makes her man work harder keeping him away, puts more cash in her pocket, makes her feel like she “made it” in life.

    Watch some influencer videos.

  17. Dark Phoenix says:

Prestige, however, was more effective for women, boosting their influence by aligning with societal expectations of competence and cooperation. For men, prestige had a weaker effect on social influence, as its communal aspects clashed with traditional masculine stereotypes.

  18. 3b says:

Dark: Men can pay for that, and get variety rather than buying a big house for one woman. There is an article in the WSJ this morning, on Meta/ Facebook, which can now offer romantic bots to have a relationship/ romance with. And, they can be sexually explicit too. No need to buy the house for the woman, other alternatives.

  19. 3b says:

They just want a normal relationship.

I see lots of content online that tells guys that they’re overpaying for pussy and tell them to avoid marriage and hypergamy. Apparently this is part of the “manosphere” and it may be that guys are listening, based on some trends I’ve read about. No evidence of that other than correlation but it’s interesting.

I think that this could have real ramifications for our current societal ordering.

  37. Dark Phoenix says:

The 4B movement won’t work because most of us already don’t get laid

I argue the 4B movement will fail since most young men whom the movement seeks to boycott already don’t have dates or relationships with women. Many of us have never had a girlfriend or have even come close to experiencing what it’s like to have intercourse with a woman. 4B to young men is like covid to introverts. I already never go outside so you think covid will change anything? Therefore men shouldn’t care about 4B since most of them already don’t get any action. Men rage at women for threatening to not sleep with them anymore meanwhile I’m just like “you guys get laid?”.

Disclaimer: As a socialist of obviously support the feminist values behind the movement but I have my doubts whether it will succeed.

If women stopped sleeping with men I literately wouldn’t notice a difference and most men wouldn’t either. Therefore I conclude that 4B isn’t the most effective method of combating the problem of misogyny among men.

  38. Dark Phoenix says:

Anyone else joining the 4B movement?

    No sex
    No children
    No relationships
    No emotional labor

Men deserve, at the minimum, basic human decency just as we do. But relationships, sex, children, and constant emotional labor? No, let’s opt out.

Men who voted blue will always have a special place in my heart and vulva, but yall are gonna have to provide some proof you voted for human rights before I get there homes.

(And yes, if a black person said this about white people, I’d be unbothered. Don’t come at me with the ‘if a …… said this’)

Edit: 4B in the states is VASTLY different from 4B in Korea. There’s far more gender injustice there and their rules are different from what the idea in the US would be.

In the US, since there’s a lot of open minded, liberal men who genuinely support women’s rights, the idea behind 4B isn’t to cut men off completely from female empathy. The idea is to make dating, ‘giving chances’ and forgiving ‘he’s just a guy’ behavior obsolete. Make them live in constant paranoia of being disliked and worthless unless they act the way we want them to (which is with empathy lmao) just like the world has programmed us to do.

Edit 2: Want to clarify something. 4B isn’t about punishment or hatred. It’s about making the world realize just how valuable women are. If you are in a relationship, cool! Be happy. I’m not demanding divorces and abortions of wanted children over here, just for those who have the option to consider how powerful it could be to ‘strike’ so to speak.

There’s so many comments I can’t possibly get to them all, but please continue the discussion. And, one final time, this isn’t a ‘men are evil’ party for terfs. Men are the way they are because the patriarchy effects them too. Its on us right now to make changes for our own safety though. We’d love to have them on our side given how unsafe our rights are at the moment. Besides, no one’s gonna arrest you for deciding to embrace 1 good guy you’re sincerely compatible with. It’s about calling attention to women’s issues, bottom line. Be kind, my loves. They won’t burn us again.

  39. Dark Phoenix says:

    4B Movement. Thoughts?

I love these women. I don’t think this could ever happen in America. We are too inundated by commercialism to ever believe that we don’t need men. Every single thing we’ve known since birth has taught us that our value resides in having a husband and children. Beauty is the only thing women continually buy. We are made to feel insecure.
I believe if women start refusing men’s dumbass, bullshit, they would improve. Right now (hey Tinder), they know they can show up unshowered with no money with no conversational skills and gals will still spread their legs. Then raise the babies mostly alone. Women are strength and power, but the menmenmen try to make us forget that (yes, I am aware some of you have most excellent hubs and fathers, but not most of us).
